Structural and Thermal Properties of Montmorillonite/Ionic Liquid Composites

Halochromic smart packaging film based on montmorillonite/polyvinyl alcohol-high amylose starch nanocomposite for monitoring chicken meat freshness

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was blended with high amylose starch (HAS) at a ratio of 3:1, and reinforced with montmorillonite (MMT K10) at different concentrations (1, 2, 5, and 7 % w/w of polymers) and anthocyanins (ANT) to develop an active and smart packaging film. MMT addition enhanced the film's mechanical, barrier, thermal, and water resistance properties. Incorporating ANT extracted from roselle calyx into the optimal nanocomposite film (MMT/PVA-HAS II) increased the films' antioxidant, pH-response, and antibacterial properties. FTIR, XRD, and SEM confirmed the intermolecular interactions and even distribution of ANT and MMT in the film matrix. Release rate of ANT was dependent on type of simulant, with higher rate in aqueous solutions compared to alcoholic/fatty food simulants, and cytotoxicity evaluation proved safety of films for food packaging applications. Storage experiments confirmed the potential applicability of the novel halochromic smart film as a promising candidate for monitoring chicken spoilage under abusive storage conditions.

Modeling, optimization and efficient use of MMT K10 nanoclay for Pb (II) removal using RSM, ANN and GA

Regarding the long-term toxic effects of Pb (II) ions on human health and its bioaccumulation property, taking measures for its reduction in the environment is necessary. The MMT-K₁₀ (montmorillonite-k₁₀) nanoclay was characterized by XRD, XRF, BET, FESEM, and FTIR. The effects of pH, initial concentrations, reaction time, and adsorbent dosage were studied. The experimental design study was carried out with RSM-BBD method. Results prediction and optimization were investigated with RSM and artificial neural network (ANN)-genetic algorithm (GA) respectively. The RSM results showed that the experimental data followed the quadratic model with the highest regression coefficient value (R² = 0.9903) and insignificant lack of fit (0.2426) showing the validity of the Quadratic model. The optimal adsorption conditions were obtained at pH 5.44, adsorbent = 0.98 g/l, concentration of Pb (II) ions = 25 mg/L, and reaction time = 68 min. Similar optimization results were observed by RSM and artificial neural network-genetic algorithm methods. The experimental data revealed that the process followed the Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity was 40.86 mg/g. Besides, the kinetic data indicated that the results fitted with the pseudo-second-order model. Hence, the MMT-K₁₀ nanoclay can be a suitable adsorbent due to having a natural source, simple and inexpensive preparation, and high adsorption capacity.

Organomodified nanoclay with boron compounds is improving structural and antibacterial properties of nanofibrous matrices

In this study, nanofibrous polymeric matrices were successfully developed with nanoclay, montmorillonite (MMT) and various boron (B) compounds, which were known to have positive effects on the wound healing with elevated antibacterial properties. For this purpose, MMT was modified with quaternary ammonium salt, trimethyl octadecyl ammonium bromide (TMOD), and boron compounds, boron nitride (BN), zinc borate (ZB), or phenylboronic acid (PBA) were adsorbed on organomodified MMT (OMMT). Then, poly (lactic acid) (PLA) based nanofibrous PLA-OMMT/B composites were fabricated via electrospinning. Modification of MMT nanoparticles with TMOD occurred through ion-exchange reaction and led to better homogenous fibrous structures which exhibited dramatic inhibition for gram-positive bacteria. Moreover, composites with ZB and PBA demonstrated both bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects for gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The chemical structures of the matrices were evaluated through ATR-FTIR and supported the intercalated composite formation. The thermal and mechanical stabilities of PLA matrices were also enhanced after OMMT and B incorporation. The lowest breaking strain value was recorded for PLA-OMMT/PBA composite compared to other B composites. The 100% and 50% extracts of the PLA-OMMT matrices showed modest cytotoxic effect on the human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) on the second day culture that probably originated from TMOD. These results demonstrated that PLA-OMMT/B matrices, especially PBA including matrices, can be used as replaceable wound dressings that have limited interaction with cells but exhibit antibacterial activity and support the early stages of wound healing both morphologically and chemically.

Characteristics and performance studies of a composite polymer electrolyte membrane based on chitosan/glycerol-sulfosuccinic acid modified montmorillonite clay

In this study, chitosan (CS) doped sulphosuccinic acid (SSA)-glycerol (Gly) and modified montmorillonite clay (MMT) were successfully fabricated. The membranes were prepared using the solution casting method. Analysis of morphology and topography using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that the composite membrane with 3 wt% MMT filler, namely CS/MMT-1, possessed the most adequate surface roughness compared to the other fabricated membranes. Furthermore, mechanical characterization of the CS/MMT-1 composite membrane showed that the membrane achieved satisfactory mechanical strength with a value of 39.23 MPa. Proton conductivity of the composite membranes increased as the temperature was increased. The proton conductivity of the CS/MMT-1 composite membrane increased from 1.75 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 25 °C up to 3.57 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 80 °C. The CS/MMT-1 composite membrane also exhibited a methanol permeability value that was significantly lower than that of pristine CS, namely 1.22 × 10-7 cm2 s-1 and 12.49 × 10-7 cm2 s-1, respectively. The results of this study show that the fabricated composite membrane can be used as an alternative polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) for DMFC applications.

Nanoclay Reinforced Ternary Blends Based on Biodegradable Polymers for Drug Delivery Application

In this study, ternary blends based on chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, and polyethylene glycol reinforced with organically modified montmorillonite (nanoclay) clay were synthesized. These ternary blends were evaluated as transdermal drug delivery patches using tramadol as a model drug. The FTIR study showed interaction among important functional groups and compatibility among the mixing components. Among drug-loaded formulations, composite MA12 shows maximum thermal stability with 27.9% weight residue at 540°C. The prepared formulations exhibited crystalline nature as observed by XRD analysis. SEM studies revealed that there are no gaps and cracks in prepared films and nanoclay was found dispersed in the formulations. The swelling ratio was higher in pH 1.2 as compared to pH 4.5 and pH 6.8 buffers, and there was an increase in swelling with an increase in PVA concentration. Moreover, the drug release test performed in phosphate buffer pH 6.8 showed that tramadol release from nanocomposite films increases with an increase in PEG concentration. Permeation studies indicated that the rate of permeation increased with a decrease in PVA concentration. The permeation rate was found to be higher for samples without nanoclay. The overall results suggest nanocomposite films as excellent candidates for transdermal drug delivery application.

Cation effects on the properties of halloysite-confined bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide based ionic liquids

Four types of ionic liquids (ILs) of [X]TFSI ([X]+ is a cation such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium BMIm+, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium BMPyrr+, 1-butyl-1-methylpiperidinium BMPip+ and methyltrioctylammonium MOc3Am+ and TFSI- is the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion) were confined in halloysite nanoclay (Hal) at an excess ionic liquid concentration (IL : Hal ∼55 : 45 wt%) and studied by X-ray diffraction, TG, DSC analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. It was found that the physicochemical properties of ILs trapped by halloysite at maximum loading are similar to those of bulk ILs and change depending on the cation type and size. The cold crystallization temperature (T cc) and melting point (T m) of the crystalline mesophase in confined BMIm+ and BMPyrr+ ionic liquids are higher than in the bulk ones, while in the amorphous BMPyrr+ mesophase, the T cc and T m values decrease by 9.7 and 14.2 °C, respectively. Confined BMPip+ and MOc3Am+ only have the glass transition temperature (T g), which increases by 1.5 and 8.0 °C, respectively, compared to bulk ILs. The onset decomposition temperature (T d) decreases by 106.5, 40.7, 19.0 and 7.7 °C in BMIm+, BMPip+, BMPyrr+ and MOc3Am+, respectively. The changes in the properties are explained by the cation and anion interaction with halloysite, as well as by the transformation of the ionic liquid structure. It is found that in this case the amount of the TFSI- anion trans-conformer increases in the following order: BMIm+ > BMPyrr+ ∼ BMPip+ >> MOc3Am+.

Enhancing the Thermal Stability of Ionogels: Synthesis and Properties of Triple Ionic Liquid/Halloysite/MCC Ionogels

In this study, an ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, was used to prepare ionogels with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and halloysite (Hal). SEM, XRD, TG, DSC, FTIR spectroscopy, conductometry and mechanical tests were used to study the morphology, structure, thermal behaviour and electrophysical and mechanical characteristics of synthesised ionogels. XRD analysis showed a slight decrease in the interlayer space of halloysite in ionogels containing MCC, which may have been associated with the removal of residual water molecules resulting from hydrophilic IL anions and polymer macromolecules. A change in conductivity and glass-transition temperature of the ionic liquid was revealed due to intercalation into halloysite (a confinement effect) and modification with cellulose. For triple IL/Hal/MCC ionogels, the characteristic thermal degradation temperatures were higher than the corresponding values for IL/Hal composites. This indicates that the synthesised IL/Hal/MCC ionogels are characterised by a greater thermal stability than those of IL/Hal systems.

Synthesis, structure and thermal properties of montmorillonite/ionic liquid ionogels

Sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) was synthesized as a result of two-stage processing of natural bentonite (Bent), and its particle-size distribution, structure and morphology were studied. It was found that the two-stage processing of the original clay resulted in a significant increase in the specific surface area (from 72 to 120 m² g^-1). The prepared Na-MMT powder was modified by two ionic liquids (ILs), namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMImNTf₂) and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMImNTf₂). Several methods, such as SEM, XRD, TG, DSC, FTIR spectroscopy were used to study the structure and thermal behavior of the produced ionogels. The effects of the IL cation on thermal characteristics of the Na-MMT/IL ionogels were studied. Using the DSC, characteristic temperatures of glass transition, crystallization and melting were determined for Na-MMT/IL composites. Taking into account the literature data and using the method of thermogravimetric analysis, it was shown that ionogel formation was accompanied by a decrease in the thermal stability of the IL.

Removal of sulfadiazine and ciprofloxacin by clays and manganese oxides: Coupled sorption-oxidation kinetic model

Sorption onto clays (montmorillonite and kaolinite), oxidation and sorption by manganese oxides (synthesized MnO and natural MnO), and coupled sorption-oxidation experiments were conducted for the removal of antibiotics sulfadiazine (SDZ) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) at pH 5 and 8. Individual sorption and oxidation modelling were carried out using the first-order kinetic model. A coupled sorption-oxidation kinetic model was developed to predict the simultaneous sorption and oxidation process. The coupled sorption-oxidation enhanced the antibiotic sorption, with the first-order sorption rate constants in the simultaneous presence of clays and manganese oxides (k_sorp) being higher than those with clays only (k_sorp⁰). In contrast, a depression was observed; the first-order oxidation and sorption combination rate constants in the simultaneous presence of manganese oxides and clays (k_MnO) were lower than those with manganese oxides only (k_MnO⁰). In the coupled sorption-oxidation reaction, 13.5-62.5% of SDZ and CIP removal was attributed to the sorption. The SDZ and CIP species distributions at pH 5 affected the coupled sorption and oxidation systems more than those at pH 8. The best removal efficiency was achieved by the montmorillonite-synthesized MnO combination, mainly due to the higher surface area (A_BET) and pore size of montmorillonite and synthesized MnO combination compared to other clays and manganese oxides combinations.

Preparation and Characterization of Montmorillonite/PEDOT-PSS and Diatomite/PEDOT-PSS Hybrid Materials. Study of Electrochemical Properties in Acid Medium

The hybridization of clay minerals with conducting polymers receives great interest for different potential applications, including environmental remediation. This work studies and compares the electrochemical properties of two different clays, montmorillonite (Mont) and diatomite (Diat), and their respective clay/PEDOT-PSS hybrid materials in H2SO4 medium. The hybrid materials were prepared by electropolymerization of EDOT in the presence of PSS. The physico-chemical and electrochemical properties of both clays were analyzed by different techniques, and the influence of the clay properties on electropolymerization and the electroactivity of the resulting clay/PEDOT-PSS hybrids was investigated. Specifically, the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox probe and the oxidation of diclofenac, as a model pharmaceutical emerging pollutant, were used to test the electron transfer capability and oxidative response, respectively, of the clay/PEDOT-PSS hybrids. The results demonstrate that, despite its low electrical conductivity, the Mont is an electroactive material itself with good electron-transfer capability. Conversely, the Diat shows no electroactivity. The hybridization with PEDOT generally enhances the electroactivity of the clays, but the clay properties affect the electropolymerization efficiency and hybrids electroactivity, so the Mont/PEDOT displays improved electrochemical properties. It is demonstrated that clay/PEDOT-PSS hybrids exhibit diclofenac oxidation capability and diclofenac concentration sensitivity.

Simultaneous Removal and Recovery of Metal Ions and Dyes from Wastewater through Montmorillonite Clay Mineral

The main objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of Montmorillonite nanoclay (Mt), readily and inexpensively available, for the simultaneous adsorption (and removal) of two classes of pollutants: metal ions and dyes. The attention was focused on two "model" pollutants: Ce(III) and crystal violet (CV). The choice is due to the fact that they are widespread in wastewaters of various origins. These characteristics, together with their effect on human health, make them ideal for studies on water remediation. Moreover, when separated from wastewater, they can be recycled individually in industrial production with no or simple treatment. Clay/pollutant hybrids were prepared under different pH conditions and characterized through the construction of the adsorption isotherms and powder X-ray diffraction. The adsorption behavior of the two contaminants was revealed to be significantly different: the Langmuir model reproduces the adsorption isotherm of Ce(III) better, thus indicating that the clay offers a unique adsorption site to the metal ions, while the Freundlich model proved to be the most reliable for the uptake of CV which implies heterogeneity of adsorption sites. Moreover, metal ions do not adsorb at all under acidic conditions, whereas the dye is able to adsorb under all the investigated conditions. The possibility to modulate the adsorption features by simply changing the pH conditions was successfully employed to develop an efficient protocol for the removal and separation of the different components from aqueous solutions mimicking wastewaters.
