The Role of Fluorine in F-La/TiO2 Photocatalysts on Photocatalytic Decomposition of Methanol-Water Solution

Modulation of the Structure of the Conjugated Polymer TMP and the Effect of Its Structure on the Catalytic Performance of TMP-TiO2 under Visible Light: Catalyst Preparation, Performance and Mechanism

The photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is largely hindered by its low photoresponse and quantum efficiency. TiO₂ modified by conjugated polymers (CPs) is considered a promising approach to enhance the visible light responsiveness of TiO₂. In this work, in order to investigate the effect of CP structural changes on the photocatalytic performance of TiO₂ under visible light, trimesoyl chloride-melamine polymers (TMPs) with different structural characteristics were created by varying the parameters of the polymerisation process of tricarbonyl chloride (TMC) and melamine (M). The TMPs were subsequently composited with TiO₂ to form complex materials (TMP-TiO₂) using an in situ hydrothermal technique. The photocatalytic activity of TMP-TiO₂ was evaluated by the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The results showed that the trend of the structure of the TMP with the reaction conditions was consistent with the visible light responsiveness of TMP-TiO₂, and TMP (1:1)-TiO₂ had the best photocatalytic activity and could degrade 96.1% of the RhB. In conclusion, our study provided new insights into the influence of the structural changes of TMPs on the photocatalytic activity of TMP-TiO₂ under visible light, and it improves our understanding of how conjugated polymers affect the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂ under visible light.

Influence of High Temperature Synthesis on the Structure of Graphitic Carbon Nitride and Its Hydrogen Generation Ability

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) was obtained by thermal polymerization of dicyandiamide, thiourea or melamine at high temperatures (550 and 600 °C), using different heating rates (2 or 10 °C min⁻¹) and synthesis times (0 or 4 h). The effects of the synthesis conditions and type of the precursor on the efficiency of g-C₃N₄ were studied. The most efficient was the synthesis from dicyandiamide, 53%, while the efficiency in the process of synthesis from melamine and thiourea were much smaller, 26% and 11%, respectively. On the basis of the results provided by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis (EA), the best precursor and the optimum conditions of synthesis of g-C₃N₄ were identified to get the product of the most stable structure, the highest degree of ordering and condensation of structure and finally the highest photocatalytic activity. It was found that as the proton concentration decreased and the degree of condensation increased, the hydrogen yields during the photocatalytic decomposition of water–methanol solution were significantly enhanced. The generation of hydrogen was 1200 µmol g⁻¹ and the selectivity towards hydrogen of more than 98%.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Medium onto Perlite-Based Geopolymer

In this work, geopolymer synthesized with perlite and an alkaline activator medium was evaluated as a new adsorbent and photocatalyst for degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye from an aqueous medium. The functional group, the structure, and the morphology of the raw and the synthesized materials were characterized using FT-IR, XRD, and SEM analysis. The degradation of MB in the contaminated solution was examined using the spectrophotometric technique. Several analysis methods revealed the formation of the aluminosilicate gel after the geopolymerization reaction. The kinetics data with UV and without UV irradiations were well fitted with the pseudo-second-order equation. The results indicated that the degradation efficiency of cationic dye by perlite-based geopolymer without and with UV was up to 88.94% and 97.87% in 4 hours, respectively. The degradation efficiencies of methylene blue are in the following order: perlite-based geopolymer under UV irradiations is greater than perlite-based geopolymer without UV irradiations that is larger than UV irradiations. The overall experimental results suggested that the new elaborated material with synergetic adsorption and photocatalytic activities has a great potential for the treatment of water contaminated by hazardous substances.

Ni/Si-Codoped TiO2 Nanostructure Photoanode for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

We synthesized Ni/Si-codoped TiO₂ nanostructures for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, by electrochemical anodization of Ti-1Ni-5Si alloy foils in ethylene glycol/glycerol solutions containing a small amount of water. The effects of annealing temperature on PEC properties of Ni/Si-codoped TiO₂ photoanode were investigated. We found that the Ni/Si-codoped TiO₂ photoanode annealed at 700 °C had an anatase-rutile mixed phase and exhibited the highest photocurrent density of 1.15 mA/cm² at 0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), corresponding to a photoconversion efficiency of 0.70%, which was superior to Ni-doped and Si-doped TiO₂. This improvement in PEC water splitting could be attributed to the extended light absorption, faster charge transfer, possibly lower charge recombination, and longer lifetime.
