Nanosilicon-Based Composites for (Bio)sensing Applications: Current Status, Advantages, and Perspectives

Frictional behavior of one-dimensional materials: an experimental perspective

The frictional behavior of one-dimensional (1D) materials, including nanotubes, nanowires, and nanofibers, significantly influences the efficient fabrication, functionality, and reliability of innovative devices integrating 1D components. Such devices comprise piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators, biosensing and implantable devices, along with biomimetic adhesives based on 1D arrays. This review compiles and critically assesses recent experimental techniques for exploring the frictional behavior of 1D materials. Specifically, it underscores various measurement methods and technologies employing atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, and optical microscopy nanomanipulation. The emphasis is on their primary applications and challenges in measuring and characterizing the frictional behavior of 1D materials. Additionally, we discuss key accomplishments over the past two decades in comprehending the frictional behaviors of 1D materials, with a focus on factors such as materials combination, interface roughness, environmental humidity, and non-uniformity. Finally, we offer a brief perspective on ongoing challenges and future directions, encompassing the systematic investigation of the testing environment and conditions, as well as the modification of surface friction through surface alterations.

Fluorescent Biosensors Based on Silicon Nanowires

Nanostructures are arising as novel biosensing platforms promising to surpass current performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and affordability of standard approaches. However, for several nanosensors, the material and synthesis used make the industrial transfer of such technologies complex. Silicon nanowires (NWs) are compatible with Si-based flat architecture fabrication and arise as a hopeful solution to couple their interesting physical properties and surface-to-volume ratio to an easy commercial transfer. Among all the transduction methods, fluorescent probes and sensors emerge as some of the most used approaches thanks to their easy data interpretation, measure affordability, and real-time in situ analysis. In fluorescent sensors, Si NWs are employed as substrate and coupled with several fluorophores, NWs can be used as quenchers in stem-loop configuration, and have recently been used for direct fluorescent sensing. In this review, an overview on fluorescent sensors based on Si NWs is presented, analyzing the literature of the field and highlighting the advantages and drawbacks for each strategy.

Photoluminescence label-free immunosensor for the detection of Aflatoxin B1 using polyacrylonitrile/zinc oxide nanofibers

The precise and rapid detection of hazardous molecules, microorganisms, pollutants, and toxins currently remains a global challenge. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a toxic and dangerous product of fungi that considered as cancerogenic, mutagenic, and immunosuppressive for humans and animals. Therefore, the screening of AFB1 in food and beverages plays an important role in preventing foodborne illnesses. In this study, AFB1 molecules were detected in a microfluidic device with integrated polyacrylonitrile/zinc oxide (PAN/ZnO) nanofibers fabricated via a combination of the electrospinning, and atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques. The structural and optical analyses of PAN/ZnO nanofibers were performed and samples with the most suitable properties were utilized for AFB1 detection. In order to obtain the biorecognition layer towards AFB1, PAN/ZnO samples were modified by (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), and glutaraldehyde (GA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and monoclonal antibodies (Anti-AFB1). Subsequently, photoluminescence (PL)-based immunosensor was integrated into a microfluidic cell and tested for AFB1 detection. The mechanism of PL changes caused by AFB1 & Anti-AFB1 complex formation was analyzed and developed. The proposed approach enables the detection of AFB1 with the lowest concentration (LOD) of about 39 pg/ml, while the sensitivity range was evaluated as 0.1-20 ng/ml. The obtained values of LOD and sensitivity, as well as the simplicity of the detection method, make this approach a prospect for further application.

Synthesis and photoluminescence properties of hybrid 1D core-shell structured nanocomposites based on ZnO/polydopamine

In the present work, we report on the modelling of processes at the zinc oxide and polydopamine (ZnO/PDA) interface. The PDA layer was deposited onto ZnO nanorods (NRs) via chemical bath deposition. The defect concentrations in ZnO before and after PDA deposition were calculated and analysed. The ZnONRs/PDA core–shell nanostructures were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) measurements, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The TEM and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements confirmed the conformal coating of PDA, while the PL emission from ZnO and ZnONRs/PDA samples showed a reduction of intensity after the PDA deposition. The decrease of defect concentration participating in PL and quantum efficiency explains the PL reduction. Finally, the observed decrease of activation energies and a shift of the PL peaks are attributed to the formation of an additional local electrical field between the PDA and ZnO nanostructures.

The results shown in this study provide a unique insight into the optical and electronic processes of the ZnO/PDA interface.

Porous Silicon-Zinc Oxide Nanocomposites Prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition for Biophotonic Applications

In the current research, a porous silicon/zinc oxide (PSi/ZnO) nanocomposite produced by a combination of metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) methods is presented. The applicability of the composite for biophotonics (optical biosensing) was investigated. To characterize the structural and optical properties of the produced PSi/ZnO nanocomposites, several studies were performed: scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance, and photoluminescence (PL). It was found that the ALD ZnO layer fully covers the PSi, and it possesses a polycrystalline wurtzite structure. The effect of the number of ALD cycles and the type of Si doping on the optical properties of nanocomposites was determined. PL measurements showed a “shoulder-shape” emission in the visible range. The mechanisms of the observed PL were discussed. It was demonstrated that the improved PL performance of the PSi/ZnO nanocomposites could be used for implementation in optical biosensor applications. Furthermore, the produced PSi/ZnO nanocomposite was tested for optical/PL biosensing towards mycotoxins (Aflatoxin B1) detection, confirming the applicability of the nanocomposites.

Nanoparticles Modified with Cell-Penetrating Peptides: Conjugation Mechanisms, Physicochemical Properties, and Application in Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy

Based on their tunable physicochemical properties and the possibility of producing cell-specific platforms through surface modification with functional biomolecules, nanoparticles (NPs) represent highly promising tools for biomedical applications. To improve their potential under physiological conditions and to enhance their cellular uptake, combinations with cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) represent a valuable strategy. CPPs are often cationic peptide sequences that are able to translocate across biological membranes and to carry attached cargos inside cells and have thus been recognized as versatile tools for drug delivery. Nevertheless, the conjugation of CPP to NP surfaces is dependent on many properties from both individual components, and further insight into this complex interplay is needed to allow for the fabrication of highly stable but functional vectors. Since CPPs per se are nonselective and enter nearly all cells likewise, additional decoration of NPs with homing devices, such as tumor-homing peptides, enables the design of multifunctional platforms for the targeted delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs. In this review, we have updated the recent advances in the field of CPP-NPs, focusing on synthesis strategies, elucidating the influence of different physicochemical properties, as well as their application in cancer research.

Application of Organic-Inorganic Hybrids in Chemical Analysis, Bio- and Environmental Monitoring

Organic-inorganic hybrids (OIH) are considered to be a powerful platform for applications in many research and industrial fields. This review highlights the application of OIH for chemical analysis, biosensors, and environmental monitoring. A methodology toward metrological traceability measurement and standardization of OIH and demonstration of the role of mathematical modeling in biosensor design are also presented. The importance of the development of novel types of OIH for biosensing applications is highlighted. Finally, current trends in nanometrology and nanobiosensors are presented.
