Interpreting the Terahertz Spectrum of Complex Materials: The Unique Contribution of the Bayesian Analysis

Study on a terahertz biosensor based on graphene-metamaterial

The interaction between the terahertz wave propagating in free space and the sample is weak, which leads to the weak signal of the sample, which cannot meet the detection needs of trace samples. In order to meet the detection of trace samples, a kind of metamaterial absorber (the basic unit of the absorber is composed of gold-high resistance silicon-aluminum three-layer structure) is designed, and the monolayer graphene is transferred on the surface of the metamaterial absorber to construct the graphene-metamaterial absorber heterostructure. The transmission spectrum of the resonant cavity is simulated and measured by terahertz time domain spectroscopy system, and the obvious resonance frequency shift is observed. The results show that the graphene-metamaterial absorber heterostructure can detect josamycin antibiotic solution with concentration of 0.02 mg/L (the mass of josamycin is 0.2 ng). Compared with using the same structure metamaterial absorber to detect josamycin antibiotics, the sensitivity is increased by an order of magnitude. Using graphene-metamaterial heterostructure to detect the relative change of heterostructure reflectivity caused by josamycin antibiotics can reach 40%. The research in this paper provides a new technical means for accurate and rapid detection in terahertz band.

Controlling terahertz sound propagation: some preliminary Inelastic X-Ray Scattering result

The control of sound propagation in materials via the design of their elastic properties is an exciting task at the forefront of Condensed Matter. It becomes especially compelling at terahertz frequencies, where phonons are the primary conveyors of heat flow. Despite the increasing focus on this goal, this field of research is still in its infancy; To achieve a few advances in this field, we performed several Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (IXS) measurements on elementary systems as dilute suspensions of nanoparticles (NPs) in liquids. We found that nanoparticles can effectively impact the sound propagation of the hosting liquid. We also explored the possibility of shaping terahertz sound propagation in a liquid upon confinement on quasi-unidimensional cavities. These results are here reviewed and discussed, and future research directions are finally outlined.

Time dependence of quantum correlation functions

In the past few years, the exponential expansion analysis of time autocorrelation functions has provided profound insight into the leading microscopic processes driving the atomic-scale dynamics and has made it possible to highlight the presence and the role of various relaxation channels through which the fundamental correlation functions decay with time. Here we apply this method to the determination of the full time dependence of a correlation function c(t) in a quantum system at nonzero temperature, by making explicit its relationship with its Kubo transform c_{K}(t), which in some cases can be approximately computed with the presently available quantum simulation techniques. We obtain an exact expression for c(t) in terms of the exponential modes that describe the time behavior of c_{K}(t). The relative importance of the various modes in determining the overall shape of c(t) can then be studied in detail. This work extends to the full time domain the results of a previous paper [Guarini et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 135301 (2019)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.123.135301], in which we employed the same method to calculate the zero time value of the velocity autocorrelation function, to obtain a microscopic description of the quantum mean kinetic energy in a fluid. In particular, we show that the decay constants and the frequencies of the dominant microscopic modes of c(t) are the same as those of c_{K}(t), but the dynamics of the quantum system also contains an additional term decaying on a time scale determined solely by temperature of the system.

The Terahertz Dynamics of an Aqueous Nanoparticle Suspension: An Inelastic X-ray Scattering Study

We used the high-resolution Inelastic X-ray Scattering beamline of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory to measure the terahertz spectrum of pure water and a dilute aqueous suspension of 15 nm diameter spherical Au nanoparticles (Au-NPs). We observe that, despite their sparse volume concentration of about 0.5%, the immersed NPs strongly influence the collective molecular dynamics of the hosting liquid. We investigate this effect through a Bayesian inference analysis of the spectral lineshape, which elucidates how terahertz transport properties of water change upon Au-NP immersion. In particular, we observe a nearly complete disappearance of the longitudinal acoustic mode and a mildly decreased ability to support shear wave propagation.
