Corrosion Inhibition Mechanism and Efficiency Differentiation of Dihydroxybenzene Isomers Towards Aluminum Alloy 5754 in Alkaline Media

Solar light driven atomic and electronic transformations in a plasmonic Ni@NiO/NiCO3 photocatalyst revealed by ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

This work employs ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) to delve into the atomic and electronic transformations of a core-shell Ni@NiO/NiCO3 photocatalyst - a model system for visible light active plasmonic photocatalysts used in water splitting for hydrogen production. This catalyst exhibits reversible structural and electronic changes in response to water vapor and solar simulator light. In this study, APXPS spectra were obtained under a 1 millibar water vapor pressure, employing a solar simulator with an AM 1.5 filter to measure spectral data under visible light illumination. The in situ APXPS spectra indicate that the metallic Ni core absorbs the light, exciting plasmons, and creates hot electrons that are subsequently utilized through hot electron injection in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by NiCO3. Additionally, the data show that NiO undergoes reversible oxidation to NiOOH in the presence of water vapor and light. The present work also investigates the contribution of carbonate and its involvement in the photocatalytic reaction mechanism, shedding light on this seldom-explored aspect of photocatalysis. The APXPS results highlight the photochemical reduction of carbonates into -COOH, contributing to the deactivation of the photocatalyst. This work demonstrates the APXPS efficacy in examining photochemical reactions, charge transfer dynamics and intermediates in potential photocatalysts under near realistic conditions.

Outer Sphere Electron Transfer Enabling High-Voltage Aqueous Electrolytes

Aqueous electrolytes with a low voltage window (1.23 V) and prone side reactions, such as hydrogen evolution reaction and cathode dissolution, compromise the advantages of high safety and low cost of aqueous metal-ion batteries. Herein, introducing catechol (CAT) into the aqueous electrolyte, an outer sphere electron transfer mechanism is initiated to inhibit the water reactivity, achieving an electrochemical window of 3.24 V. In a typical Zn-ion battery, the outer sphere electrons jump from CAT to Zn2+-H2O at a geometrically favorable situation and between the solvation molecules without breaking or forming chemical bonds as that of the inner sphere electron transfers. The excited state π-π stacking further leads to the outer sphere electron transfer occurring at the electrolyte/electrode interface. This high-voltage electrolyte allows achieving an operating voltage two times higher than that of the usual aqueous electrolytes and provides almost the highest energy density and power density for the V2O5-based aqueous Zn-ion full batteries. The Zn//Zn symmetric battery delivers a 4000 h lifespan, and the Zn//V2O5 full battery achieves a ∼380 W h kg-1 energy density and a 92% capacity retention after 3000 cycles at 1 A g-1 and a 2.4 V output voltage. This outer sphere electron transfer strategy paves the way for designing high-voltage aqueous electrolytes.

An examination of the effectiveness of the expired drug isoprinosine in preventing aluminum corrosion in alkaline solutions using both computational and experimental techniques

A now-expired medication called isoprinosine was examined in NaOH (0.50 M) solutions as a potential novel inhibitor of aluminum corrosion. The inhibitory effectiveness of the isoprinosine compounds was examined utilizing different electrochemical tests (open circuit potential OCP, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy EIS), surface examination and quantum calculations. Increases in isoprinosine concentration were seen to increase the inhibitory efficacy. It was discovered that the inhibitory action, which results in the inhibition of charge and mass transfer and protects the aluminum against harmful ions, was brought on by isoprinosine molecules adhering to the aluminum surface. Additionally, the surface morphology of Al dissolved in a 0.50 M NaOH solution without and with the existence of an isoprinosine molecule was analyzed using SEM/EDX and AFM techniques. Utilizing the optimized geometric parameters of the ground state molecules, FMO simulations and additional studies were executed successfully utilizing the density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p)). Based on the expected energies for the molecular carriers of charge, HOMO and LUMO. Calculations are also done for the AIM charges, Fukui functions, AIM charges, and excitation energies. Furthermore, molecular dynamic was simulated to explore the corrosion inhibition efficiency and mechanism of inhibition. The computational results are in the same agreement with experimental results, showing that isoprinosine can inhibit the corrosion of aluminum in 0.5 M NaOH.

Antioxidant Silicone Elastomers without Covalent Cross-Links

Improved sustainability is associated with elastomers that readily breakdown in the environment at end of life and, as importantly, that can be reprocessed/reused long before end of life arises. We report the preparation of silicone elastomers that possess both thermoplasticity-reprocessability-and antioxidant activity. A combination of ionic and H-bonding links natural phenolic antioxidants, including catechol, pyrogallol, tannic acid, and others, to telechelic aminoalkylsilicones. The mechanical properties of the elastomers, including their processability, are intimately linked to the ratio of [ArOH]/[H2NR] that was found to be optimal when the ratio exceeded 1:1.

Ionic liquid as an effective green inhibitor for acid corrosion of aluminum composite: experimental and theoretical considerations

Results of anticorrosive performance of ionic liquid 1-methyl-1-propyl-piperidinium bromide (MPPB) on corrosion of 6061Al-10vol% SiC composite (Al-MMC) in 0.05 M HCl solution. Electrochemical techniques were adopted to study corrosion and corrosion inhibition rates. Experiments were conducted in the temperature range of 308–323 K by varying concentrations of MPPB. Conditions were standardized to accomplish maximum inhibition efficiency. Kinetic parameters were evaluated. Results were fitted into various adsorption isotherm models and they fitted best into the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Using data from adsorption isotherms, thermodynamic parameters were calculated. The surface morphology was examined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), atomic force microscope (AFM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). FTIR–spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were performed to reaffirm the adsorption of MPPB. Adsorption of the inhibitor and mechanistic aspects of corrosion inhibition were supported and supplemented by quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory (DFT). The investigation revealed that percentage inhibition efficiency (% IE) improved with the increase in the concentration of MPPB, while it decreased with a rise in temperature. Maximum efficiency of 60% was observed with 400 ppm MPPB at 308 K. MPPB acted as a mixed inhibitor, obeyed the Langmuir adsorption model, and the mode of adsorption was physisorption. Quantum chemical calculations validated the results of the adsorption study.

Electrocatalytic performance of oxygen-activated carbon fibre felt anodes mediating degradation mechanism of acetaminophen in aqueous environments

Carbon felts are flexible and scalable, have high specific areas, and are highly conductive materials that fit the requirements for both anodes and cathodes in advanced electrocatalytic processes. Advanced oxidative modification processes (thermal, chemical, and plasma-chemical) were applied to carbon felt anodes to enhance their efficiency towards electro-oxidation. The modification of the porous anodes results in increased kinetics of acetaminophen degradation in aqueous environments. The utilised oxidation techniques deliver single-step, straightforward, eco-friendly, and stable physiochemical reformation of carbon felt surfaces. The modifications caused minor changes in both the specific surface area and total pore volume corresponding with the surface morphology. A pristine carbon felt electrode was capable of decomposing up to 70% of the acetaminophen in a 240 min electrolysis process, while the oxygen-plasma treated electrode achieved a removal yield of 99.9% estimated utilising HPLC-UV-Vis. Here, the electro-induced incineration kinetics of acetaminophen resulted in a rate constant of 1.54 h^-1, with the second-best result of 0.59 h^-1 after oxidation in 30% H₂O₂. The kinetics of acetaminophen removal was synergistically studied by spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, revealing various reaction pathways attributed to the formation of intermediate compounds such as p-aminophenol and others. The enhancement of the electrochemical oxidation rates towards acetaminophen was attributed to the appearance of surface carbonyl species. Our results indicate that the best-performing plasma-chemical treated CFE follows a heterogeneous mechanism with only approx. 40% removal due to direct electro-oxidation. The degradation mechanism of acetaminophen at the treated carbon felt anodes was proposed based on the detected intermediate products. Estimation of the cost-effectiveness of removal processes, in terms of energy consumption, was also elaborated. Although the study was focussed on acetaminophen, the achieved results could be adapted to also process emerging, hazardous pollutant groups such as anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals.

Efficient Decrease in Corrosion of Steel in 0.1 M HCl Medium Realized by a Coating with Thin Layers of MnTa2O6 and Porphyrins Using Suitable Laser-Type Approaches

The purpose of this research is to meet current technical and ecological challenges by developing novel steel coating systems specifically designed for mechanical equipment used in aggressive acid conditions. Homogeneous sandwich-type layered films on the surface of steel electrodes were realized using a pseudo-binary oxide, MnTa₂O₆, and two different substituted porphyrin derivatives, namely: 5-(4-carboxy-phenyl)-10,15,20-tris (4-methyl-phenyl)-porphyrin and 5-(4-methyl-benzoate)-10,15,20-tris (4-methyl-phenyl)-porphyrin, which are novel investigated compound pairs. Two suitable laser strategies, pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE), were applied in order to prevent porphyrin decomposition and to create smooth layers with low porosity that are extremely adherent to the surface of steel. The electrochemical measurements of corrosion-resistant coating performance revealed that in all cases in which the steel electrodes were protected, a significant value of corrosion inhibition efficiency was found, ranging from 65.6 to 83.7%, depending on the nature of the porphyrin and its position in the sandwich layer. The highest value (83.7%) was obtained for the MAPLE/PLD laser deposition of 5-(4-carboxy-phenyl)-10,15,20-tris (4-methyl-phenyl)-porphyrin/MnTa₂O₆(h), meaning that the inhibitors adsorbed and blocked the access of the acid to the active sites of the steel electrodes.

Molecular modelling of compounds used for corrosion inhibition studies: a review

Molecular modelling of organic compounds using computational software has emerged as a powerful approach for theoretical determination of the corrosion inhibition potential of organic compounds. Some of the common techniques involved in the theoretical studies of corrosion inhibition potential and mechanisms include density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, and artificial neural network (ANN) and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling. Using computational modelling, the chemical reactivity and corrosion inhibition activities of organic compounds can be explained. The modelling can be regarded as a time-saving and eco-friendly approach for screening organic compounds for corrosion inhibition potential before their wet laboratory synthesis would be carried out. Another advantage of computational modelling is that molecular sites responsible for interactions with metallic surfaces (active sites or adsorption sites) and the orientation of organic compounds can be easily predicted. Using different theoretical descriptors/parameters, the inhibition effectiveness and nature of the metal-inhibitor interactions can also be predicted. The present review article is a collection of major advancements in the field of computational modelling for the design and testing of the corrosion inhibition effectiveness of organic corrosion inhibitors.

Erosion Corrosion Behavior of Aluminum in Flowing Deionized Water at Various Temperatures

To optimize the operating temperature and flow velocity of cooling water in a high voltage direct current (HVDC) thyristor valve cooling system, the erosion corrosion characteristics of aluminum electrodes in deionized water at various temperatures were studied. With increasing water temperature, the corrosion current of the aluminum electrode gradually increases and the charge transfer impedance gradually decreases, thus, the corrosion of aluminum tends to become serious. The aluminum electrode in 50 °C deionized water has the most negative corrosion potential (-0.930 V), the maximum corrosion current (1.115 × 10^-6 A cm^-2) and the minimum charge transfer impedance (8.828 × 10^-6 Ω), thus, the aluminum corrosion at this temperature is the most serious. When the temperature of deionized water increases, the thermodynamic activity of the ions and dissolved oxygen in the deionized water increases, and the mass transfer process accelerates. Therefore, the electrochemical corrosion reaction of the aluminum surface will be accelerated. The corrosion products covering the aluminum electrode surface are mainly Al(OH)₃. With increasing water temperature, the number of pits and grooves formed by corrosion on the aluminum surface increased. In this paper, the molar activation energy Ea and the equilibrium constant K of the aluminum corrosion reaction with various temperatures are calculated. This clarifies the effect of temperature on the aluminum corrosion reaction, which provides a basis for protecting aluminum from corrosion. The results of this study will contribute to research that is focused on the improvement of production techniques used for HVDC thyristor valve cooling systems.
