Synthesis and Adsorption Performance of a Hierarchical Micro-Mesoporous Carbon for Toluene Removal under Ambient Conditions

Adsorption and membrane separation for removal and recovery of volatile organic compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a crucial kind of pollutants in the environment due to their obvious features of severe toxicity, high volatility, and poor degradability. It is particularly urgent to control the emission of VOCs due to the persistent increase of concentration and the stringent regulations. In China, clear directions and requirements for reduction of VOCs have been given in the "national plan on environmental improvement for the 13th Five-Year Plan period". Therefore, the development of efficient technologies for removal and recovery of VOCs is of great significance. Recovery technologies are favored by researchers due to their advantages in both recycling VOCs and reducing carbon emissions. Among them, adsorption and membrane separation processes have been extensively studied due to their remarkable industrial prospects. This overview was to provide an up-to-date progress of adsorption and membrane separation for removal and recovery of VOCs. Firstly, adsorption and membrane separation were found to be the research hotspots through bibliometric analysis. Then, a comprehensive understanding of their mechanisms, factors, and current application statuses was discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives in this emerging field were briefly highlighted.

Performance evaluation of activated carbon sorbents for indoor air purification during normal and wildfire events

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a significant class of indoor air pollutants and are known for their adverse effects on health. A common strategy to reduce indoor VOC levels is to use sorbents, including activated carbons (ACs). The amount of activated carbon is critical to achieving a reasonable AC filter lifetime in an air purification device. The study aims to estimate the amount of carbon needed in a typical indoor environment and in a heavy use setting such as during cooking, agriculture field fires, or wildfires. The problem is complex as various types of ACs are used, and the type and concentration of VOCs in the indoor environment also vary in different settings. Therefore, literature data on thermophysical parameters for 45 AC-VOC pairs was used to estimate the required amount of AC under a given set of conditions. The study uses modeling distributions of the footprint of suitable carbon filters for the removal of common VOCs encountered indoors for a period of 30 days. It was found that while 50% of AC-VOC pairs surveyed will require about 190-370 g at low indoor VOCs levels of 0.1-1 μmol/m³(considered a good clean indoor environment), up to 1.1 kg of ACs are needed for a carbon filter to survive 30 days in a typical indoor environment (VOCs levels of 10 μmol/m³). On the other hand, 3-15 kg or more AC will be needed in a filter to survive 30 days during adverse events such as wildfires. The objective of the present study is to aid consumers and businesses in making an informed decision on the type of AC-based indoor air filters that meet their needs. Using this data, an open-access online calculator is being developed to predict the amount of carbon needed in a filter/device at any specific indoor air condition.

A hyper-cross-linked polymer derived from pitch as an efficient adsorbent for VOCs

Hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs) have been attracted widespread attention as adsorbents in recent years. A series of HCPs (HCP-1, HCP-2 and HCP-3) were synthesized via a Friedel-Crafts reaction using low-cross-linked pitch as precursor and dichloromethane (DCM) as cross-linking reagent and solvent. The prepared HCPs were characterized by N2 adsorption, Fourier transform infrared (FI-IR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and static water contact angle. The resultant HCPs possess micro/meso pore structures and a high stability. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas of HCP-1, HCP-2 and HCP-3 are 152 m2·g−1, 467 m2·g−1 and 447 m2·g−1, respectively. Their total pore volumes vary from 0.207 cm·g−1 to 0.545 cm3·g−1 and following the sequence of HCP-1<HCP-3<HCP-2. The FTIR spectra of HCPs suggests the DCM is successfully grafted onto the skeleton structure. Dynamic adsorption capacities of the prepared HCP-1, HCP-2 and HCP-3 were examined and the results show the adsorption properties of o-xylene on HCP-2 are significantly higher than that of the other HCPs. The adsorption amount of o-xylene on HCP-2 is 198.18 mg·g−1, which is higher than that of benzene, suggesting a strong adsorption selectivity for o-xylene over benzene. In addition, the effect of water vapor on the adsorption of o-xylene onto HCP-2 was investigated. The dynamic adsorption amount of o-xylene on HCP-2 decreases by 76.47% under the relative humidity (RH) of 30%, implying that the HCP-2 has poor hydrophobicity. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of o-xylene on HCP-2 shows a slight decline after five adsorption cycles.

Template-Free Preparation of a Mesopore-Rich Hierarchically Porous Carbon Monolith from a Thermally Rearrangeable Polyurea Network

A mesopore-rich, hierarchically porous carbon monolith was prepared by carbonizing a polyisocyanurate network derived by thermal rearrangement of a polyurea network. The initial polyurea network was synthesized by the cross-linking polymerization of tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)methane (TAPM) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in the sol-forming condition, followed by precipitation into nanoparticulate solids in a nonsolvent. The powder was molded into a shape and then heated at 200–400 °C to obtain the porous carbon precursor composed of the rearranged network. The thermolysis of urea bonds to amine and isocyanate groups, the subsequent cyclization of isocyanates to isocyanurates, and the vaporization of volatiles caused sintering of the nanoparticles into a monolithic network with micro-, meso-, and macropores. The rearranged network was carbonized to obtain a carbon monolith. It was found that the rearranged network, with a high isocyanurate ratio, led to a porous carbon with a high mesopore ratio. The electrical conductivity of the resulting carbon monoliths exhibited a rapid response to carbon dioxide adsorption, indicating efficient gas transport through the hierarchical pore structure.
