Characterization of Organosolv Birch Lignins: Toward Application-Specific Lignin Production

Organosolv pretreatment represents one of the most promising biomass valorization strategies for renewable carbon-based products; meanwhile, there is an overall lack of holistic approach to how extraction conditions affect the suitable end-usages. In this context, lignin extracted from silver birch (Betula pendula L.) by a novel hybrid organosolv/steam-explosion treatment at varying process conditions (EtOH %; time; catalyst %) was analyzed by quantitative NMR (¹H-¹³C HSQC; ¹³C NMR; ³¹P NMR), gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Pyr-gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC/MS), and thermogravimetric analysis, and the physicochemical characteristics of the lignins were discussed regarding their potential usages. Characteristic lignin interunit bonding motifs, such as β-O-4', β-β', and β-5', were found to dominate in the extracted lignins, with their abundance varying with treatment conditions. Low-molecular-weight lignins with fairly unaltered characteristics were generated via extraction with the highest ethanol content potentially suitable for subsequent production of free phenolics. Furthermore, β-β' and β-5' structures were predominant at higher acid catalyst contents and prolonged treatment times. Higher acid catalyst content led to oxidation and ethoxylation of side-chains, with the concomitant gradual disappearance of p-hydroxycinnamyl alcohol and cinnamaldehyde. This said, the increasing application of acid generated a broad set of lignin characteristics with potential applications such as antioxidants, carbon fiber, nanoparticles, and water remediation purposes.

Transforming Waste Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) into Nitrogen Doped Carbon Nanotubes and Its Utility in Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Bisphenol-A Removal from Contaminated Water

Till date, waste plastics are either down-cycled to cheap products like fibers or burnt in incinerators to generate heat. In this manuscript, we report a simple and effective technique for microwave induced transformation of waste polyethylene terephthalate (wPET) to carbon nano-tubes (CNT). Iron nano-particles dispersed on graphene substrate acted as catalyst for CNT growth whereas urea served the dual role of de-polymerisation of wPET and also as nitrogen doping agent. Application of our newly synthesized 3-D meso-porous graphene-nitrogen doped carbon nanotube- iron electrode (Fe@NCNT-rGO) as electro-catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) shows a positive half-wave potential (E_1/2) of 0.75 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode), nearly ideal four-electron pathway and excellent methanol tolerance when compared to commercial 20% Pt/C. The utility of Fe@NCNT-rGO for removal of bisphenol A from contaminated waters is also reported.

Wheat Straw Biochar as a Specific Sorbent of Cobalt in Soil

There is an urgent need to search for new sorbents of pollutants presently delivered to the environment. Recently biochar has received much attention as a low-cost, highly effective heavy metal adsorbent. Biochar has been identified as an efficient material for cobalt (Co) immobilization from waters; however, little is known about the role of Co immobilization in soil. Hence, in this study, a batch experiment and a long-term incubation experiment with biochar application to multi-contaminated soil with distinct properties (sand, loam) were conducted to provide a brief explanation of the potential mechanisms of Co (II) sorption on wheat straw biochar and to describe additional processes that modify material efficiency for metal sorption in soil. The soil treatments with 5% (v/w) wheat straw biochar proved to be efficient in reducing Co mobility and bioavailability. The mechanism of these processes could be related to direct and indirect effects of biochar incorporation into soil. The FT-IR analysis confirmed that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups present on the biochar surface played a dominant role in Co (II) surface complexation. The combined effect of pH, metal complexation capacity, and the presence of Fe and Mn oxides added to wheat straw biochar resulted in an effective reduction of soluble Co (II), showing high efficiency of this material for cobalt sorption in contaminated soils.
