Synthesis of High Surface Area α-KyMnO2 Nanoneedles Using Extract of Broccoli as Bioactive Reducing Agent and Application in Lithium Battery

Nanostructured Molybdenum-Oxide Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries: An Outstanding Increase in Capacity

This work aimed at synthesizing MoO₃ and MoO₂ by a facile and cost-effective method using extract of orange peel as a biological chelating and reducing agent for ammonium molybdate. Calcination of the precursor in air at 450 °C yielded the stochiometric MoO₃ phase, while calcination in vacuum produced the reduced form MoO₂ as evidenced by X-ray powder diffraction, Raman scattering spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy images showed different morphologies and sizes of MoO_x particles. MoO₃ formed platelet particles that were larger than those observed for MoO₂. MoO₃ showed stable thermal behavior until approximately 800 °C, whereas MoO₂ showed weight gain at approximately 400 °C due to the fact of re-oxidation and oxygen uptake and, hence, conversion to stoichiometric MoO₃. Electrochemically, traditional performance was observed for MoO₃, which exhibited a high initial capacity with steady and continuous capacity fading upon cycling. On the contrary, MoO₂ showed completely different electrochemical behavior with less initial capacity but an outstanding increase in capacity upon cycling, which reached 1600 mAh g^-1 after 800 cycles. This outstanding electrochemical performance of MoO₂ may be attributed to its higher surface area and better electrical conductivity as observed in surface area and impedance investigations.

A Survey on Analytical Methods for the Characterization of Green Synthesized Nanomaterials

Nowadays, nanotechnologies are well established and the uses of a great variety of nanomaterials show exponential growth. The development of green synthesis procedures experienced a great development thanks to the contribution of researchers of diverse origins. The versatility of green chemistry allows producing a wide range of organic and inorganic nanomaterials with numerous promising applications. In all cases, it is of paramount importance to carefully characterize the resulting nanomaterials because their properties will determine their correct performance to accomplish the function to which they were synthesized or even their detrimental effects like nanotoxicological behavior. This review provides an overview of frequently employed characterization methods and their applications for green synthesized nanomaterials. However, while several different nanoscale materials and their associated green construction methodology are being developed, other important techniques would be extensively incorporated into this field soon. The aim is to encourage researchers in the field to employ a variety of these techniques for achieving an exhaustive characterization of new nanomaterials and for contributing to the development of validated green synthesis procedures.

Upcycling of Wastewater via Effective Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production Using MnO2 Nanoparticles-Decorated Activated Carbon Nanoflakes

In the present work, we demonstrated the upcycling technique of effective wastewater treatment via photocatalytic hydrogen production by using the nanocomposites of manganese oxide-decorated activated carbon (MnO₂-AC). The nanocomposites were sonochemically synthesized in pure water by utilizing MnO₂ nanoparticles and AC nanoflakes that had been prepared through green routes using the extracts of Brassica oleracea and Azadirachta indica, respectively. MnO₂-AC nanocomposites were confirmed to exist in the form of nanopebbles with a high specific surface area of ~109 m²/g. When using the MnO₂-AC nanocomposites as a photocatalyst for the wastewater treatment, they exhibited highly efficient hydrogen production activity. Namely, the high hydrogen production rate (395 mL/h) was achieved when splitting the synthetic sulphide effluent (S²⁻ = 0.2 M) via the photocatalytic reaction by using MnO₂-AC. The results stand for the excellent energy-conversion capability of the MnO₂-AC nanocomposites, particularly, for photocatalytic splitting of hydrogen from sulphide wastewater.
