Dielectric Characterization of Non-Conductive Fabrics for Temperature Sensing through Resonating Antenna Structures

Metamaterial based AMC backed archimedean spiral antenna for in-vitro microwave hyperthermia of skin cancer

This research article presents a study that uses microwave frequencies (ISM band) for treatment of skin cancer by heating the malignant cells on skin with a Microwave Hyperthermia (MWHT) applicator. The proposed MWHT applicator has been designed as an Archimedean Spiral Microstrip Patch Antenna (AMSPA) of dimensions 38 × 38 × 1.64 mm3 backed with a Meshed-shaped AMC (48 × 48 × 3.27mm3) reflector, placed at an optimized distance of 12 mm from AMSPA. The proposed AMSPA is designed as a single spiral resonator and fabricated on FR-4 substrate, excited using a feed network. The proposed AMSPA shows a resonance at 2.5 GHz with an impedance BW of 260 MHz (2.37-2.63 GHz) and peak gain of 3.20 dB with a bidirectional radiation pattern. An AMC is placed at its backside that can be exploited as a phase-compensation surface to attain an in-phase profile for directive emission and improve the BW upto 470 MHz, peak gain to 6.8 dB and also enhance the front-to-back ratio of the radiating antenna with radiation efficiency of 80%. The simulated environment for hyperthermia analysis is set up using penne's Bio-Heat equations to deliver microwave energy to the bio-mimic, that leads to a rise in temperature over the designed bio-mimic in CST MWS in the range of 41-45°C. The validation of MWHT radiation properties and temperature rise inside the malignancy of phantom is carried out by fabricating the bio-mimic using gelatine, vegetable oils and glycerol. This set up enhances the penetration-depth of EM waves inside the tri-layered phantom up-to 29.5 mm with Effective Field Surface of 36 × 36 mm2 and SAR of 8 W/Kg.

Silver Conductive Threads-Based Embroidered Electrodes on Textiles as Moisture Sensors for Fluid Detection in Biomedical Applications

Wearable sensors have become part of our daily life for health monitoring. The detection of moisture content is critical for many applications. In the present research, textile-based embroidered sensors were developed that can be integrated with a bandage for wound management purposes. The sensor comprised an interdigitated electrode embroidered on a cotton substrate with silver-tech 150 and HC 12 threads, respectively, that have silver coated continuous filaments and 100% polyamide with silver-plated yarn. The said sensor is a capacitive sensor with some leakage. The change in the dielectric constant of the substrate as a result of moisture affects the value of capacitance and, thus, the admittance of the sensor. The moisture sensor's operation is verified by measuring its admittance at 1 MHz and the change in moisture level (1-50) µL. It is observed that the sensitivity of both sensors is comparable. The identically fabricated sensors show similar response and sensitivity while wash test shows the stability of sensor after washing. The developed sensor is also able to detect the moisture caused by both artificial sweat and blood serum, which will be of value in developing new sensors tomorrow for smart wound-dressing applications.

Screen Printing Carbon Nanotubes Textiles Antennas for Smart Wearables

Electronic textiles have become a dynamic research field in recent decades, attracting attention to smart wearables to develop and integrate electronic devices onto clothing. Combining traditional screen-printing techniques with novel nanocarbon-based inks offers seamless integration of flexible and conformal antenna patterns onto fabric substrates with a minimum weight penalty and haptic disruption. In this study, two different fabric-based antenna designs called PICA and LOOP were fabricated through a scalable screen-printing process by tuning the conductive ink formulations accompanied by cellulose nanocrystals. The printing process was controlled and monitored by revealing the relationship between the textiles' nature and conducting nano-ink. The fabric prototypes were tested in dynamic environments mimicking complex real-life situations, such as being in proximity to a human body, and being affected by wrinkling, bending, and fabric care such as washing or ironing. Both computational and experimental on-and-off-body antenna gain results acknowledged the potential of tunable material systems complimenting traditional printing techniques for smart sensing technology as a plausible pathway for future wearables.

Reusable Sensor for Strontium Sulfate Scale Monitoring in Seawater

The onset of scaling in oil pipelines can halt or drastically reduce oil production, causing huge financial losses and delays. Current methods used to monitor scaling can take weeks, while the scaling process only takes few hours. The proposed sensor is designed for online monitoring of strontium ions concentration in seawater as an early scaling indicator. The sensor operates in the GHz range by probing the shift in the resonance frequency due to changes in the ionic concentrations of the medium. The results show selective sensitivity to changes in the strontium ions concentration even in the presence of many other ions found in seawater. The measured sensitivity is found to be stable and linear with a detection level of better than 0.08% (0.042 mol/L) of strontium ions in seawater. This work demonstrates a robust GHz sensor for strontium sulfate scale monitoring and early detection, which could be used in the oil industry to prevent huge production losses. These results could also be extended further to target the monitoring of other ions in different industrial sectors.

Numerical and Experimental Investigation of the Opposite Influence of Dielectric Anisotropy and Substrate Bending on Planar Radiators and Sensors

The simultaneous influences of the substrate anisotropy and substrate bending are numerically and experimentally investigated in this paper for planar resonators on flexible textile and polymer substrates. The pure bending effect has been examined by the help of well-selected flexible isotropic substrates. The origin of the anisotropy (direction-depended dielectric constant) of the woven textile fabrics has been numerically and then experimentally verified by two authorship methods described in the paper. The effect of the anisotropy has been numerically divided from the effect of bending and for the first time it was shown that both effects have almost comparable but opposite influences on the resonance characteristics of planar resonators. After the selection of several anisotropic textile fabrics, polymers, and flexible reinforced substrates with measured anisotropy, the opposite influence of both effects, anisotropy and bending, has been experimentally demonstrated for rectangular resonators. The separated impacts of the considered effects are numerically investigated for more sophisticated resonance structures—with different types of slots, with defected grounds and in fractal resonators for the first three fractal iterations. The bending effect is stronger for the slotted structures, while the effect of anisotropy predominates in the fractal structures. Finally, useful conclusions are formulated and the needs for future research are discussed considering effects in metamaterial wearable patches and antennas.

A Review of Flexible Wearable Antenna Sensors: Design, Fabrication Methods, and Applications

This review paper summarizes various approaches developed in the literature for antenna sensors with an emphasis on flexible solutions. The survey helps to recognize the limitations and advantages of this technology. Furthermore, it offers an overview of the main points for the development and design of flexible antenna sensors from the selection of the materials to the framing of the antenna including the different scenario applications. With regard to wearable antenna sensors deployment, a review of the textile materials that have been employed is also presented. Several examples related to human body applications of flexible antenna sensors such as the detection of NaCl and sugar solutions, blood and bodily variables such as temperature, strain, and finger postures are also presented. Future investigation directions and research challenges are proposed.
