Study of the Effect of Titanium Dioxide Hydrosol on the Photocatalytic and Mechanical Properties of Paper Sheets

Chitosan/cellulose nanocrystals/graphene oxide scaffolds as a potential pH-responsive wound dressing: Tuning physico-chemical, pro-regenerative and antimicrobial properties

Chronic wounds (CWs) treatment still represents a demanding medical challenge. Several intrinsic physiological signals (i.e., pH) help to stimulate and support wound healing. CWs, in fact, are characterized by a predominantly alkaline pH of the exudate, which acidifies as the wound heals. Therefore, pH-responsive wound dressings hold great potential owing to their capability of tuning their functions according to the wound conditions. Herein, porous chitosan (CS)-based scaffolds loaded with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and graphene oxide (GO) were successfully fabricated using a freeze-drying method. CNCs were extracted from bagasse pulps fibers through acid hydrolysis. GO was synthesised by Hummer's method. The scaffolds were then ionically cross-linked using the amino acid L-Arginine (Arg), as a bioactive agent, and tested as potential pH-responsive wound dressing. Notably, the effect of CNCs and GO singly and simultaneously loaded within the CS-Arg scaffolds was investigated. The modulation of CNCs and GO content within CS-Arg scaffolds facilitated the development of scaffolds with an optimal pH-dependent swelling ratio capability and extended degradation time. Furthermore, CS/CNC/GO-Arg scaffolds exhibited tuned biological features, in terms of antimicrobial activity, cellular proliferation/migration ability, and the expression of extracellular matrix specific markers (i.e., elastin and collagen I) related to wound healing in human dermal fibroblasts.

In Vitro and In Vivo Studies of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles with Galactose Coating as a Prospective Drug Carrier

In today's medicine, progress often depends on new products with special qualities. Nanotechnology focuses on the creation of materials tailored to fulfill specific therapeutic requirements. This study aims to elucidate the potential of nanoparticles, particularly titanium dioxide nanoparticles, as carriers for pharmaceutical agents. To mitigate the release of potentially harmful titanium ions from the carrier's surface, modifications were implemented. In the initial phase, titanium dioxide, nanoparticles were obtained based on the sol-gel method, and their surfaces were coated with galactose. Characterization of these materials encompassed analysis of the particle size, specific surface area, microscopic morphology, and titanium ion release. Additionally, drug release profiles, particularly those of tadalafil, were investigated. In vitro assessments were conducted to evaluate the cytotoxic and mutagenic effects of the developed materials on CHO cells. The findings revealed a reduction in titanium ion release from the modified carrier compared to its unmodified counterpart. Pharmacokinetic studies in rats demonstrated enhanced absorption of the drug when the drug was delivered using the modified carrier. The synthesized materials exhibited high purity and favorable surface properties conducive to effective drug-carrier interactions. The results suggest that the modified titanium dioxide nanoparticles hold promise as efficient drug delivery vehicles in biomedical applications.

Silver nanoparticles incorporated with superior silica nanoparticles-based rice straw to maximize biogas production from anaerobic digestion of landfill leachate

Treating hazardous landfill leachate poses significant environmental challenges due to its complex nature. In this study, we propose a novel approach for enhancing the anaerobic digestion of landfill leachate using silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) conjugated with eco-friendly green silica nanoparticles (Si NPs). The synthesized Si NPs and Ag@Si NPs were characterized using various analytical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The anaerobic digestion performance of Si NPs and Ag@Si NPs was tested by treating landfill leachate samples with 50 mg/L of each NP. The results demonstrated an enhancement in the biogas production rate compared to the control phase without the nanocomposite, as the biogas production increased by 14% and 37% using Si NPs and Ag@Si NPs. Ag@Si NPs effectively promoted the degradation of organic pollutants in the leachate, regarding chemical oxygen demand (COD) and volatile solids (VS) by 58% and 65%. Furthermore, microbial analysis revealed that Ag@Si NPs enhanced the activity of microbial species responsible for the methanogenic process. Overall, incorporating AgNPs conjugated with eco-friendly green Si NPs represents a sustainable and efficient approach for enhancing the anaerobic digestion of landfill leachate.

Characterization and Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Properties of Ag- and TiOx-Based (x = 2, 3) Composite Nanomaterials under UV Irradiation

Metal and metal oxide nanostructured materials have been chemically and physically characterized and tested concerning methylene blue (MB) photoremoval and UV antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In detail, silver nanoparticles and commercial BaTiO3 nanoparticles were modified to obtain nanocomposites through sonicated sol-gel TiO2 synthesis and the photodeposition of Ag nanoparticles, respectively. The characterization results of pristine nanomaterials and synthetized photocatalysts revealed significant differences in specific surface area (SSA), the presence of impurities in commercial Ag nanoparticles, an anatase phase with brookite traces for TiO2-based nanomaterials, and a mixed cubic-tetragonal phase for BaTiO3. Silver nanoparticles exhibited superior antibacterial activity at different dosages; however, they were inactive in the photoremoval of the dye. The silver-TiOx nanocomposite demonstrated an activity in the UV photodegradation of MB and UV inhibition of bacterial growth. Specifically, TiO2/AgNP (30-50 nm) reduced growth by 487.5 and 1.1 × 103 times for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, at a dose of 500 μg/mL under UV irradiation.

Optical and UV Shielding Properties of Inorganic Nanoparticles Embedded in Polymethyl Methacrylate Nanocomposite Freestanding Films

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is an interesting polymer employed in various applications due to its outstanding properties. However, its electrical and mechanical properties can be further improved by incorporating nanoparticles, and in particular, PMMA nanocomposite with nanoparticles provides various multifunctional properties. This work reports PMMA nanocomposite preparation and structural and optical characterizations incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs), TiO2 nanoparticles, and carbon quantum dots (CQDs). CNT/PMMA, TiO2/PMMA, and CQD/PMMA nanocomposite freestanding films were prepared using a simple solution method. Various properties of the prepared composite films were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, Fourier transform infrared, and UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy. Optical parameters and photocatalytic dye degradation for the films are reported, focusing on the properties of the materials. The CNT/PMMA, TiO2/PMMA, and CQD/PMMA films achieved, respectively, good electrical conductivity, photodegradation, and fluorescence compared with other composite films.

Flower like-novel nanocomposite of Mg(Ti0.99Sn0.01)O3decorated on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with high capacitive behavior as supercapacitor electrodes

In this study, ceramic materials of Mg(Ti0.99Sn0.01)O3were synthesized and decorated on reduced graphene oxide, forming a nanocomposite of rGO/Mg(Ti0.99Sn0.01)O3(rGO/MTS001). The successful synthesis results were confirmed by XRD, UV-vis analysis, FT-IR, and SEM-EDS. The MTS001 has a flower-like morphology from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, and the nanocomposites of rGO/MTS001 showed MTS001 particles decorated on the rGO's surface. The electrochemical performance of rGO/MTS001 and MTS001 was investigated by determining the specific capacitance obtained in 1 M H2SO4solution by cyclic voltammetry, followed by galvanostatic charge-discharge analysis using a three-electrode setup. The rGO/MTS001 achieved a specific capacitance of 361.97 F g‒1, compared to MTS001 (194.90 F g‒1). The capacitance retention of rGO/MTS001 nanocomposite also depicted excellent cyclic stability of 95.72% after 5000 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g‒1. The result showed that the nanocomposite of ceramics with graphene materials has a potential for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Amphiphilic Graft Copolymers as Templates for the Generation of Binary Metal Oxide Mesoporous Interfacial Layers for Solid-State Photovoltaic Cells

The binary metal oxide mesoporous interfacial layers (bi-MO meso IF layer) templated by a graft copolymer are synthesized between a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate and nanocrystalline TiO2 (nc-TiO2). Amphiphilic graft copolymers, Poly(epichlorohydrin)-graft-poly(styrene), PECH-g-PS, were used as a structure-directing agent, and the fabricated bi-MO meso IF layer exhibits good interconnectivity and high porosity. Even if the amount of ZnO in bi-MO meso IF layer increased, it was confirmed that the morphology and porosity of the bi-MO meso IF layer were well-maintained. In addtion, the bi-MO meso IF layer coated onto FTO substrates shows higher transmittance compared with a pristine FTO substrate and dense-TiO2/FTO, due to the reduced surface roughness of FTO. The overall conversion efficiency (η) of solid-state photovoltaic cells, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fabricated with nc-TiO2 layer/bi-MO meso IF layer TZ1 used as a photoanode, reaches 5.0% at 100 mW cm-2, which is higher than that of DSSCs with an nc-TiO2 layer/dense-TiO2 layer (4.2%), resulting from enhanced light harvesting, good interconnectivity, and reduced interfacial resistance. The cell efficiency of the device did not change after 15 days, indicating that the bi-MO meso IF layer with solid-state electrolyte has improved electrode/electrolyte interface and electrochemical stability. Additionally, commercial scattering layer/nc-TiO2 layer/bi-MO meso IF layer TZ1 photoanode-fabricated solid-state photovoltaic cells (DSSCs) achieved an overall conversion efficiency (η) of 6.4% at 100 mW cm-2.

Tungsten and Titanium dioxide filled VMQ polymer composites-a new lead free & flexible gamma ray-shielding materials

Flexible & lead-free gamma-ray-shielding composites were prepared using Vinyl Methyl Silicone (VMQ) matrix with Tungsten (W) and Titanium dioxide (TiO2) as fillers. The VMQ composites filled with 30 Phr (parts per hundred rubber) TiO2 and 0-70 Phr W were prepared by two-roll mill method. The dispersion of the filler particles in the composite matrix was analysed using Scanning Electron Microscope. Gamma ray shielding properties were studied in the energy range of 80 to 1170 keV using NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer. The mass attenuation coefficient (μm) of the prepared composites was found to increase with increasing concentration of W. Mass attenuation coefficients of 30 Phr W composites at gamma-ray energies of 356 and 1170 keV were found to be 0.1444 and 0.0644 cm2 g-1, while those of 50 Phr W composite were 0.1396 and 0.0707 cm2 g-1, respectively. The half value layer values of all the samples were found to decrease with increase in tungsten concentration. To appreciate the shielding ability of the prepared composites, comparison was made with the metal lead. The results show that addition of W into VMQ enhances the attenuation, whereas tensile strength and elongation at break reduces. The Shore A hardness of the W/TiO2/VMQ composites had a maximum value of 71 and the composites also prove to possess good thermal stability. Hence, the present study shows that the VMQ based W-TiO2 rubber composites serve to shield gamma radiations in medical applications and are considered as environmental friendly.

Synthesis of efficient light harvesting Cr, N Co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles for enhanced visible light photocatalytic degradation of xanthene dyes; eosin yellow and rose bengal

To solve the problem of water pollution, using environment friendly and cost effective method in short time is the need of hour. In this work, chromium (Cr) and nitrogen (N) co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized and were used for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes under visible light. The synergistic effect of metal and non-metal co-dopants added would result in appropriate reduction of band gap {from 3.2 eV of TiO2 to 2.67 eV}, decrease in recombination rate of charge carriers by trapping electrons and holes, and in better light harvesting capacity. Nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method and characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and RAMAN spectroscopy. Eosin yellow (EY) and rose bengal (RB) were subjected to photocatalytic degradation under solar light to check the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanoparticles. Effects of dye concentration, the concentration of nanoparticles, time, and pH were investigated to optimize the parameters. The results obtained were remarkable for 20 ppm EY solution took 10 min using 1 gL-1 NPs at pH 3 and 10 ppm RB solution took 5 min using 0.75 gL-1 NPs at pH 5.78 (original pH) for complete degradation. Kinetics studies were also performed and both dyes followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with R2 values 0.99312 and 0.99712 for EY and RB, respectively. The study of degraded products was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) hyphenated with electron spray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS) (LC-MS) and possible degradation pathways were made for both dyes. A reusability test was also performed showing the efficiency of the particles was up to 88% after 3 cycles of use. These notable results can be attributed to the efficient removal of organic pollutants using the proposed dopants in this study.

Effect of Substitutional Oxygen on Properties of Ti3 C2 Tx MXene Produced Using Recycled TiO2 Source

MXenes are an emerging class of 2D materials with unique properties including metallic conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and surface tunability, which ensure their utility for diverse applications. However, the synthesis of MXenes with high crystallinity and atomic stoichiometry in a low-cost process is still challenging because of the difficulty in controlling the oxygen substitute in the precursors and final products of MXenes, which limits their academic understanding and practical applications. Here, a novel cost-effective method is reported to synthesize a highly crystalline and stoichiometric Ti3 C2 Tx MXene with minimum substitutional oxygen impurities by controlling the amount of excess carbon and time of high-energy milling in carbothermal reduction of recycled TiO2 source. The highest used content (2 wt%) of excess-carbon yields TiC with the highest carbon content and minimal oxygen substitutes, which leads to the Ti3 AlC2 MAX phase with improved crystallinity and atomic stoichiometry, and finally Ti3 C2 Tx MXene with the highest electrical conductivity (11738 S cm-1 ) and superior electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. Additionally, the effects of carbon content and substitutional oxygen on the physical properties of TiC and Ti3 AlC2 are elucidated by density-functional-theory calculations. This inexpensive TiO2 -based method of synthesizing high-quality Ti3 C2 Tx MXene can facilitate large-scale production and thus accelerate global research on MXenes.

Synthesis and Characterization of MC/TiO2 NPs Nanocomposite for Removal of Pb2+ and Reuse of Spent Adsorbent for Blood Fingerprint Detection

The removal of toxic heavy metals from wastewater through the use of novel adsorbents is expensive. The challenge arises after the heavy metal is removed by the adsorbent, and the fate of the adsorbent is not taken care of. This may create secondary pollution. The study aimed to prepare mesoporous carbon (MC) from macadamia nutshells coated with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) using a hydrothermal method to remove Pb2+ and to test the effectiveness of reusing the lead-loaded spent adsorbent (Pb2+-MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite) in blood fingerprint detection. The samples were characterized using SEM, which confirmed spherical and flower-like structures of the nanomaterials, whereas TEM confirmed a particle size of 5 nm. The presence of functional groups such as C and Ti and a crystalline size of 4 nm were confirmed by FTIR and XRD, respectively. The surface area of 1283.822 m2/g for the MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite was examined by BET. The removal of Pb2+ at pH 4 and the dosage of 1.6 g/L with the highest percentage removal of 98% were analyzed by ICP-OES. The Langmuir isotherm model best fit the experimental data, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite was 168.919 mg/g. The adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The ΔH° (-54.783) represented the exothermic nature, and ΔG° (-0.133 to -4.743) indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous. In the blood fingerprint detection, the fingerprint details were more visible after applying the Pb2+-MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite than before the application. The reuse application experiments showed that the Pb2+-MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite might be a useful alternative material for blood fingerprint enhancement when applied on nonporous surfaces, eliminating secondary pollution.

A green approach for preparation of polyacrylic acid/starch incorporated with titanium dioxide nanocomposite as a biocompatible platform for curcumin delivery to breast cancer cells

Curcumin (Cur) is a polyphenolic hydrophobic molecule with several biological uses, including cancer therapy. However, its widespread use in cancer treatment faces limitations due to its low solubility in acidic and neutral conditions, rapid removal from the circulatory system, and poor bioavailability. In order to overcome these challenges, a biocompatible and pH-sensitive carrier nanoplatform was designed for the specific delivery of curcumin to breast cancer cells. This nanocomposite containing polyacrylic acid (PAA), starch, and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) was synthesized with a specific morphology through the water-in-oil-in-water green emulsification strategy. The nanocomposite structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, and field-emission scanning electrom microscopy (FE-SEM) imaging tests. The mean particle size of 151 nm for the PAA-Starch-TiO₂ nanocomposite ensures specific entry into cancer cells and minimal damage to healthy cells. Loading efficiency (LE) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) for curcumin obtained 49.50 % and 87.25 %, which are desirable for a carrier nanoplatform. Compared to the physiological medium, the in-vitro release of curcumin was higher in the acidic conditions in all time intervals, which indicates the possibility of targeted drug release from the PAA-Starch-TiO₂ nanocomposite around the tumor tissue. Furthermore, for better understanding of the release mechanism, the cumulative release data in both media were fitted with common mathematical kinetic models. Cytotoxicity tests against the MCF-7 cell line were performed using in vitro MTT and flow cytometry tests. The results showed that the PAA-Starch-TiO₂ carrying Cur was more effective through increasing the bioavailability and controlled release of the drug compared to the free Cur. Also, the death of cancer cells in the presence of this nanocomposite compared to free Cur occurred mainly through the induction of apoptosis, which indicates the programmed death of cancer cells and the high efficiency of the designed nanocarrier.

Exploration on ability of printable modified papers for the application in heat sublimation transfer printing of polyester fabric

In this work heat transfer papers were loaded with a new core-shell pigment based on precipitating thin shell of titanium dioxide on a core of rice husk silica ash TiO₂/RHSA to be applied in dye sublimation printing of textile fabrics. Besides, 0.1% (w/w) cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and 1% (w/w) bentonite (Bt) were also added sequentially to improve drainage and filler retention of the paper hand-sheets made from bleached kraft bagasse pulps. The effect of the new core-shell pigment on the mechanical and barrier properties, thermal stability and surface morphology of modified paper sheets were investigated. In addition, the study of transfer printability and ease of dye release from paper to fabric in this heat transfer printing of polyester fabrics using silk-screen printing under different transfer parameters were studied. Also, fastness measurements including washing, light and perspiration of printing polyester fabric were also estimated.

Immobilization of TiO2NP@ oxidized cellulose nanocrystals for paper-based active packaging materials

In the current work, we present a renewable alternative coating formulation made of durable titania nanoparticles and oxidized nanocellulose (TiO₂NPs@OCNs) nanocomposites and sodium alginate (SA), to create an environmentally friendly and secure food packaging paper. OCNs sugarcane fibers are firstly hydrolyzed using ammonium persulphate (APS). Then, TiO₂NPs@OCNs nanocomposites are made in situ with OCNs using a green water-based sol-gel synthesis. Gram (+) microorganisms as well as Gram (-) bacteria are used to test the antibacterial properties of the TiO₂NPs@OCN dispersions. The results show that the TiO₂NP@OCNs significantly decreases the growth for all bacterial species. The TiO₂NP@OCNs nanocomposites are mixed with SA, and the resulting formulations are used to coat paper sheets. The corresponding physicochemical properties are evaluated using FTIR, TGA, AFM, SEM, and EDX. Furthermore, the mechanical strength, air permeability, and water vapor characteristics of the paper sheets treated with SA/TiO₂NPs@OCN are carried out, resulting in a great improvement of these properties. Finally, the SA/TiO₂NPs@OCNs coated papers have been used as packaging for strawberries. The findings demonstrate that coated papers could preserve strawberry quality better than unpacked fruit and extend strawberry shelf life from 6 to 18 days.

Fabrication of cerium titanate cellulose fiber nanocomposite materials for the removal of methyl orange and methylene blue from polluted water by photocatalytic degradation

In this study, cellulose fibers (Cf), extracted from sunflower seed husk, and different molar ratios of cerium titanate (Ce-Ti) NPs were prepared from sunflower seed husk extract by a green biosynthesis approach. Cf and Ce-Ti NPs were reacted via cross-linking reaction to synthesize a novel nanocomposite photocatalyst of Ce-Ti/Cf. Using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX) spectroscopy, all manufactured materials were characterized. The results obtained from FTIR and EDX analyses indicated that Cf and its nanocomposites (0.1 Ce-Ti/Cf, 0.3 Ce-Ti/Cf, and 0.5 Ce-Ti/Cf) were successfully prepared by harnessing biomass extract from sunflower seed husk. Furthermore, XRD revealed that the degree of crystallinity of the nanocomposites was enhanced by increasing the molar ratios of the Ce-Ti NPs. The photocatalytic activity of as-fabricated 0.1 Ce-Ti/Cf, 0.3 Ce-Ti/Cf, and 0.5 Ce-Ti/Cf nanocomposite samples was investigated on methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes as model organic compounds found in wastewaters. The effects of dose, contact time, and pH on the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanocomposites, the photodegradation kinetic parameters of MB, and MO degradation with/without the addition of H2O2 were also studied. The results revealed that high photodegradation efficiency could be obtained as the ratio of TiO2 in the Ce-Ti nanocomposite formula increases. Moreover, after sunlight irradiation, the adsorption capacity and the dye decomposition ratio significantly increase during the early contact time and reach equilibrium at about 240 and 120 min for 0.5 Ce-Ti/Cf nanocomposite photocatalyst in the absence and presence of hydrogen peroxide, respectively. In light of the obtained results and the practical wastewater treatment study conducted, the prepared photocatalyst from Ce-Ti/Cf nanocomposites could be a promising material for treating dye wastewater especially collected from Egypt.

A Facile One-Pot Approach to the Fabrication of Nanocellulose-Titanium Dioxide Nanocomposites with Promising Photocatalytic and Antimicrobial Activity

The combination of cellulosic materials and metal oxide semiconductors can provide composites with superior functional properties compared to cellulose. By using nanocellulose derived from agricultural waste, we propose a one-pot and environmentally friendly approach to the synthesis of nanocellulose-TiO₂ (NC-TiO₂) nanocomposites with peculiar photocatalytic activity and antibacterial effects. The as-prepared NC-TiO₂ composites were fully characterized by different techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), μ-Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results showed that well crystalline anatase TiO₂ nanoparticles of about 5-6 nm were obtained. The photocatalytic activity in particular was evaluated by using methyl orange (MO) solution as a target pollutant at different pH values. It was found that all the tested NC-TiO₂ nanocomposites showed stable photocatalytic activity, even after consecutive photocatalytic runs. In addition, NCT nanocomposites with higher TiO₂ content showed degradation efficiency of almost 99% towards MO after 180 min of UV illumination. Finally, NC-TiO₂ nanocomposites also showed intriguing antimicrobial properties, demonstrating to be effective against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) with 20-25 mm of inhibition zone and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeuroginosa) with 21-24 mm of inhibition zone, and fungi (Candida albicans) with 9-10 mm of inhibition zone.

Effect of Stability of Two-Dimensional (2D) Aminoethyl Methacrylate Perovskite Using Lead-Based Materials for Ammonia Gas Sensor Application

Changes in physical properties of (H2C=C(CH3)CO2CH2CH2NH3)2PbI2Cl2 and (H2C=C(CH3)CO2CH2CH2NH3)2Pb(NO3)2Cl2 (2D) perovskite materials from iodide-based (I-AMP) and nitrate-based (N-AMP) leads were investigated at different durations (days) for various storage conditions. UV-Vis spectra of both samples showed an absorption band of around λmax 420 nm due to the transition of n to π* of ethylene (C=C) and amine (NH2). XRD perovskite peaks could be observed at approximately 25.35° (I-AMP) and 23.1° (N-AMP). However, a major shift in I-AMP and dramatic changes in the crystallite size, FHWM and crystallinity percentage highlighted the instability of the iodide-based material. In contrast, N-AMP showed superior stability with 96.76% crystallinity even at D20 under the S condition. Both materials were exposed to ammonia (NH3) gas, and a new XRD peak of ammonium lead iodide (NH4PbI3) with a red-shifted perovskite peak (101) was observed for the case of I-AMP. Based on the FWHM, crystallite size, crystallinity and lattice strain analysis, it can be concluded N-AMP's stability was maintained even after a few days of exposure to the said gases. These novel nitrate-based lead perovskite materials exhibited great potential for stable perovskite 2D materials and recorded less toxicity compared to famous lead iodide (PbI2) material.

Evaluation of Long-Lasting Antibacterial Properties and Cytotoxic Behavior of Functionalized Silver-Nanocellulose Composite

Materials possessing long-term antibacterial behavior and high cytotoxicity are of extreme interest in several applications, from biomedical devices to food packaging. Furthermore, for the safeguard of the human health and the environment, it is also stringent keeping in mind the need to gather good functional performances with the development of ecofriendly materials and processes. In this study, we propose a green fabrication method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles supported on oxidized nanocellulose (ONCs), acting as both template and reducing agent. The complete structural and morphological characterization shows that well-dispersed and crystalline Ag nanoparticles of about 10-20 nm were obtained in the cellulose matrix. The antibacterial properties of Ag-nanocomposites (Ag-ONCs) were evaluated through specific Agar diffusion tests against E. coli bacteria, and the results clearly demonstrate that Ag-ONCs possess high long-lasting antibacterial behavior, retained up to 85% growth bacteria inhibition, even after 30 days of incubation. Finally, cell viability assays reveal that Ag-ONCs show a significant cytotoxicity in mouse embryonic fibroblasts.

Metal Oxide-Based Photocatalytic Paper: A Green Alternative for Environmental Remediation

The interest in advanced photocatalytic technologies with metal oxide-based nanomaterials has been growing exponentially over the years due to their green and sustainable characteristics. Photocatalysis has been employed in several applications ranging from the degradation of pollutants to water splitting, CO2 and N2 reductions, and microorganism inactivation. However, to maintain its eco-friendly aspect, new solutions must be identified to ensure sustainability. One alternative is creating an enhanced photocatalytic paper by introducing cellulose-based materials to the process. Paper can participate as a substrate for the metal oxides, but it can also form composites or membranes, and it adds a valuable contribution as it is environmentally friendly, low-cost, flexible, recyclable, lightweight, and earth abundant. In term of photocatalysts, the use of metal oxides is widely spread, mostly since these materials display enhanced photocatalytic activities, allied to their chemical stability, non-toxicity, and earth abundance, despite being inexpensive and compatible with low-cost wet-chemical synthesis routes. This manuscript extensively reviews the recent developments of using photocatalytic papers with nanostructured metal oxides for environmental remediation. It focuses on titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) in the form of nanostructures or thin films. It discusses the main characteristics of metal oxides and correlates them to their photocatalytic activity. The role of cellulose-based materials on the systems’ photocatalytic performance is extensively discussed, and the future perspective for photocatalytic papers is highlighted.

Fabrication of packaging paper sheets decorated with alginate/oxidized nanocellulose‑silver nanoparticles bio-nanocomposite

Packaging is as important as the product itself because it is a crucial marketing and communication tool for business. Oxidized nanocellulose (ONC), extracted from agriculture residues of bagasse raw material using ecofriendly ammonium persulfate hydrolysis method, is used as support/reducing agent for the generation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via photochemical procedure and reinforcing element in paper functionalization. The natural polymer, sodium alginate (SA) is exploited to enhance the binding of the ONC-AgNPs over cellulose fibers. The SA/ONC-AgNPs bio-nanocomposite is incorporated on paper matrix, which represents a more suitable choice respect to other substrates for its renewable, biocompatible, biodegradable, and cost-effective properties. Structural and antimicrobial evaluations show that the papers embedded with the SA/ONC-AgNPs possess good mechanical, thermal, barrier and antibacterial properties.

High-flux TFN nanofiltration membranes incorporated with Camphor-Al2O3 nanoparticles for brackish water desalination

A new approach of highly fluxes thin film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration (NF) membranes is reported. The fabricated module was made by incorporation of commercial-Al₂O₃ (CO.TFN) and camphor-Al₂O₃NPs (CA.TFN) into polyamide layers throughout the interfacial polymerization method. A simple biological reduction technique was adopted in preparation of camphor-Al₂O₃ NPs by using CinnamomumCamphora (CC) leaf extract. The crystallography of the commercial and camphor-Al₂O₃ NPs was examined by XRD and FTIR analyses. The CO.TFN and CA.TFN membranes were characterized by determining their surface roughness, pore size, porosity, zeta potential and contact angle parameters. The morphology and the cross-sectional of the NF membranes were studied by atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). NF performance was investigated at various Al₂O₃ NPs loads, applied pressure, and time. The results, of the membranes fabricated at low cost, showed the high permeable flux and elimination of multivalent cations (Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, and water softening). Incorporating 0.98 mM of camphor-Al₂O₃ NPs into the TFC membrane increased the water flux up to 4 times compared to only 1.5 times for commercial-Al₂O₃ NPs. Moreover, the salt rejection of CO.TFN and CA.TFN NF membranes increased to 95.1% and 96.5%, respectively for the feed solution (2 g/L Na₂SO₄ at 25 °C). The optimized NF membrane module of 0.98 mM camphor-Al₂O₃-NPs (CA.TFN) shows the maximum water flux 69.0,62.2, 60.5 and 55.4 L/m².h for the feed solutions of following salts NaCl, Na₂SO₄, MgCl₂ and MgSO₄ with high salt rejections 92.4%, 96.5%, 91.7% and 95.3%, respectively. This proves that camphor-Al₂O₃ NPs have a significant role in increasing the membrane hydrophilicity. Hence, the CA.TFN membrane module proved to be a promising candidate for the real brackish water desalination as that collected from Marsa Alam, Egypt.

Graphite Felt Modified by Atomic Layer Deposition with TiO2 Nanocoating Exhibits Super-Hydrophilicity, Low Charge-Transform Resistance, and High Electrochemical Activity

Graphite felt (GF) is a multi-functional material and is widely used as electrodes of electrochemical devices for energy and environmental applications. However, due to the inherent hydrophobicity of graphite felt, it must be hydrophilically pretreated to obtain good electrochemical activity. Metal oxides coating is one of the feasible methods to modify the surface of GF, and in order to ensure that the metal oxides have a better conductivity for obtaining higher electrochemical activity, a subsequent H₂ heat-treatment process is usually adopted. In this study, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is used to deposit TiO₂ nanocoating on graphite felt (GF) for surface modification without any H₂ thermal post-treatment. The results show that the ALD-TiO₂-modified GF (ALD-TiO₂/GF) owns excellent hydrophilicity. Moreover, the ALD-TiO₂/GF exhibits excellent electrochemical properties of low equivalent series resistance (R_s), low charge-transfer resistance (R_ct), and high electrochemical activity. It demonstrates that ALD is an applicable technique for modifying the GF surface. In addition, it can be reasonably imagined that not only TiO₂ film can effectively modify the GF surface, but also other metal oxides grown by ALD with nanoscale-thickness can also obtain the same benefits. We anticipate this work to be a starting point for modifying GF surface by using ALD with metal oxides nanocoating.
