Direct Exposure of Dry Enzymes to Atmospheric Pressure Non-Equilibrium Plasmas: The Case of Tyrosinase

The Effect of Electro-Induced Multi-Gas Modification on Polymer Substrates’ Surface Structure for Additive Manufacturing

We investigated the effect of electro-induced multi-gas modification (EIMGM) duration on the adhesion and wear resistance of PET and LDPE polymer substrates used in the printing industry. It was found that EIMGM increases the polar component and the complete free surface energy from 26 to 57 mJ/m2 for LDPE and from 37 to 67 mJ/m2 for PET (due to the formation of oxygen-containing groups on the surface of the materials). Although the degree of textural and morphological heterogeneity of the modified LDPE increased more than twice compared to the initial state, it is not still suitable for application as a substrate in extrusion 3D printing. However, for PET, the plasma-chemical modification contributed to a significant increase (~5 times) in filament adhesion to its surface (due to chemical and morphological transformations of the surface layers) which allows for using the FFF technology for additive prototyping on the modified PET-substrates.

Plasma-Deposited Fluorocarbon Coatings on Methylammonium Lead Iodide Perovskite Films

Metal halide perovskites are excellent semiconductors materials that can be exploited in many fields, from the vastly explored photovoltaics to the recent applications in photocatalysis. One of the material’s known limitations is the poor resistance to moisture which induces degradation, triggered by the soft and defective nature of its surface. In this study, we explore non-equilibrium plasmas, to deposit a fluorocarbon polymer on the surface of a MAPbI3 film. We found that the treatment generally enhances the film stability over time, and in certain conditions it improves the perovskite optical properties, demonstrating to be a good strategy aiming defects passivation. Thanks to the solvent-free and non-invasive nature of plasmas, this technique has the potential to be extensively applied to a wide range of perovskite materials targeting different applications.

Low-Temperature Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Processes for the Deposition of Nanocomposite Coatings

Low-temperature atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma technologies have recently proven to offer a range of interesting opportunities for the preparation of a variety of nanocomposite (NC) coatings with different chemical compositions, structures, and morphologies. Since the late 2000s, numerous strategies have been implemented for the deposition of this intriguing class of coatings by using both direct and remote AP plasma sources. Interestingly, considerable progress has been made in the development of aerosol-assisted deposition processes in which the use of either precursor solutions or nanoparticle dispersions in aerosol form allows greatly widening the range of constituents that can be combined in the plasma-deposited NC films. This review summarizes the research published on this topic so far and, specifically, aims to present a concise survey of the developed plasma processes, with particular focus on their optimization as well as on the structural and functional properties of the NC coatings to which they provide access. Current challenges and opportunities are also briefly discussed to give an outlook on possible future research directions.
