Influence of Rigid Segment Type on Copoly(ether-ester) Properties

Chemically Recyclable Linear and Branched Polyethylenes Synthesized from Stoichiometrically Self-Balanced Telechelic Polyethylenes

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a widely used commercial plastic due to its excellent mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and water vapor barrier properties. However, less than 10% of HDPE is mechanically recycled, and the chemical recycling of HDPE is challenging due to the inherent strength of the carbon-carbon backbone bonds. Here, we report chemically recyclable linear and branched HDPE with sparse backbone ester groups synthesized from the transesterification of telechelic polyethylene macromonomers. Stoichiometrically self-balanced telechelic polyethylenes underwent transesterification polymerization to produce the PE-ester samples with high number-average molar masses of up to 111 kg/mol. Moreover, the transesterification polymerization of the telechelic polyethylenes and the multifunctional diethyl 5-(hydroxymethyl)isophthalate generated branched PE-esters. Thermal and mechanical properties of the PE-esters were comparable to those of commercial HDPE and tunable through control of the ester content in the backbone. In addition, branched PE-esters showed higher levels of melt strain hardening compared with linear versions. The PE-ester was depolymerized into telechelic macromonomers through straightforward methanolysis, and the resulting macromonomers could be effectively repolymerized to generate a high molar mass recycled PE-ester sample. This is a new and promising method for synthesizing and recycling high-molar-mass linear and branched PE-esters, which are competitive with HDPE and have easily tailorable properties.

Recent advances in the development of green furan ring-containing polymeric materials based on renewable plant biomass

Fossil resources are rapidly depleting, forcing researchers in various fields of chemistry and materials science to switch to the use of renewable sources and the development of corresponding technologies. In this regard, the field of sustainable materials science is experiencing an extraordinary surge of interest in recent times due to the significant advances made in the development of new polymers with desired and controllable properties. This review summarizes important scientific reports in recent times dedicated to the synthesis, construction and computational studies of novel sustainable polymeric materials containing unchanged (pseudo)aromatic furan cores in their structure. Linear polymers for thermoplastics, branched polymers for thermosets and other crosslinked materials are emerging materials to highlight. Various polymer blends and composites based on sustainable polyfurans are also considered as pathways to achieve high-value-added products.

Utility of Chemical Upcycling in Transforming Postconsumer PET to PBT-Based Thermoplastic Copolyesters Containing a Renewable Fatty-Acid-Derived Soft Block

Thermoplastic copolyesters (TPCs) are important structural components in countless high performance applications that require excellent thermal stability and outstanding mechanical integrity. Segmented multiblock architectures are often employed for the most demanding applications, in which semicrystalline segments of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) are combined with various low T _g soft blocks. These segmented copolymers are nearly always synthesized from pristine feedstocks that are derived from fossil-fuel sources. In this work, we show a straightforward, one-pot synthetic approach to prepare TPCs starting from high-molar mass poly(ethylene terephthalate) recyclate (rPET) combined with a hydrophobic fatty acid dimer diol flexible segment. Transesterification is exploited to create a multiblock architecture. The high molar mass and segment distribution are elucidated by detailed size-exclusion chromatography and proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It is also shown that rPET can be chemically converted to PBT through a molecular exchange, in which the ethylene glycol is substituted by introducing 1,4-butane diol. A series of copolymers with various compositions was prepared with either PET or PBT segments and the final thermal properties and mechanical performance is compared between the two different constructs. Ultimately, PBT-based TPCs crystallize faster and exhibit a higher modulus over the range of explored compositions, making them ideal for applications that require injection molding. This represents an ideal, sustainable approach to making conventional TPCs, utilizing recyclate and biobased components to produce high performance polymer constructs via an easily accessible upcycling route.

The Properties of Poly(ester amide)s Based on Dimethyl 2,5-Furanedicarboxylate as a Function of Methylene Sequence Length in Polymer Backbone

A series of poly(ester amide)s based on dimethyl furan 2,5-dicarboxylate (DMFDC), 1,3-propanediol (PDO), 1,6-hexylene glycol (HDO), and 1,3-diaminopropane (DAP) were synthesized via two-step melt polycondensation. The phase transition temperatures and structure of the polymers were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurement was carried out to investigate the free volume. In addition, the mechanical properties of two series of poly(ester amide)s were analyzed. The increase in the number of methylene groups in the polymer backbone resulted in a decrease in the values of the transition temperatures. Depending on the number of methylene groups and the content of the poly(propylene furanamide) (PPAF), both semi-crystalline and amorphous copolymers were obtained. The free volume value increased with a greater number of methylene groups in the polymer backbone. Moreover, with a lower number of methylene groups, the value of the Young modulus and stress at break increased.
