Black Talc-Based TiO2/ZnO Composite for Enhanced UV-Vis Photocatalysis Performance

Hybrid nanomaterial composed of chitosan, curcumin, ZnO and TiO2 for antibacterial therapies

Metal nanoparticles have been tremendously utilised, such as; antibacterial and anticancer agents. Although metal nanoparticles exhibits antibacterial and anticancer activity, but the drawback of toxicity on normal cells limits their clinical applications. Therefore, improving the bioactivity of hybrid nanomaterials (HNMs) and minimizing toxicity is of paramount importance for biomedical applications. Herein, a facile and simple double precipitation method was used to develop biocompatible and multifunctional HNM from antimicrobial chitosan, curcumin, ZnO and TiO₂. In HNM, biomolecules chitosan and curcumin were used to control the toxicity of ZnO and TiO₂ and improve their biocidal properties. The cytotxicological properties of the HNM was studied against human breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) and fibroblast (L929) cell lines. The antimicrobial activity of the HNM was examined against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, via the well-diffusion method. In addition, the antioxidant property was evaluated by the radical scavenging method. These findings actively, support the ZTCC HNMs potential, as an innovative biocidal agent for applications in the clinical and healthcare sectors.

Effects of Mono- and Bifunctional Surface Ligands of Cu-In-Se Quantum Dots on Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Production

Semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) are promising materials for solar energy conversion because of their bandgap tunability, high absorption coefficient, and improved hot-carrier generation. CuInSe₂ (CISe)-based QDs have attracted attention because of their low toxicity and wide light-absorption range, spanning visible to near-infrared light. In this work, we study the effects of the surface ligands of colloidal CISe QDs on the photoelectrochemical characteristics of QD-photoanodes. Colloidal CISe QDs with mono- and bifunctional surface ligands are prepared and used in the fabrication of type-II heterojunction photoanodes by adsorbing QDs on mesoporous TiO₂. QDs with monofunctional ligands are directly attached on TiO₂ through partial ligand detachment, which is beneficial for electron transfer between QDs and TiO₂. In contrast, bifunctional ligands bridge QDs and TiO₂, increasing the amount of QD adsorption. Finally, photoanodes fabricated with oleylamine-passivated QDs show a current density of ~8.2 mA/cm², while those fabricated with mercaptopropionic-acid-passivated QDs demonstrate a current density of ~6.7 mA/cm² (at 0.6 V_RHE under one sun illumination). Our study provides important information for the preparation of QD photoelectrodes for efficient photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation.

Si/SiO2/Al2O3 Supported Growth of CNT Forest for the Production of La/ZnO/CNT Photocatalyst for Hydrogen Production

The use of ZnO as a photocatalyst with a reduced recombination rate of charge carriers and maximum visible light harvesting remains a challenge for researchers. Herein, we designed and synthesized a unique La/ZnO/CNTs heterojunction system via a sol–gel method to evaluate its photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution. A ferrocene powder catalyst was tested for the production of CNT forests over Si/SiO₂/Al₂O₃ substrate. A chemical vapor deposition (CVD) route was followed for the forest growth of CNTs. The La/ZnO/CNTs composite showed improved photocatalytic efficiency towards hydrogen evolution (184.8 mmol/h) in contrast to 10.2 mmol/h of pristine ZnO. The characterization results show that promoted photocatalytic activity over La/ZnO/NTs is attributed to the spatial separation of the charge carriers and extended optical absorption towards the visible light spectrum. The optimum photocatalyst shows a 16 h cycle performance for hydrogen evolution. The H₂ evolution rate under visible light illumination reached 10.2 mmol/h, 145.9 mmol/h and 184.8 mmol/h over ZnO, La/ZnO and La/ZnO/CNTs, respectively. Among the prepared photocatalysts, ZnO showed the lowest H₂ evolution rate due to the fast recombination of electron–hole pairs than heterojunction photocatalysts. This research paves the way for the development of ZnO and CNT-based photocatalysts with a wide optical response and reduced charge carrier recombinations.
