Annealing Effect on the Structure and Optical Properties of CBD-ZnS Thin Films for Windscreen Coating

Surface topography, structural, optical and dc electrical behaviors of pristine and Co-doped ZnS thin films

The prime goal of the present research is to synthesize pristine zinc sulfide (PZS) and cobalt (Co)-doped zinc sulfide (CDZS) thin films with different doping concentrations (DC) via chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The effect of Co-doping on the surface topography, structural, optical and dc-electrical behaviors of PZS thin films has been ascertained. Scanning electron microscopy images exhibited nearly sphere-shaped agglomerates of grains dispersed throughout the surface with cracks in PZS thin film whereas cracks were absent in CDZS. Atomic force microscopy image displayed smooth surface of CDZS thin film with evenly dispersed small grains. The hexagonal wurtzite structure of PZS and CDZS thin films with varied X-ray diffraction (XRD) parameters was confirmed via XRD analysis. Optical investigation revealed that the optical direct band gap energy increased with decreasing DC from 12 % to 4 %. Alteration of other optical parameters namely absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient, refractive index, real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant, etc. with DC was also discussed. Direct current electrical investigation revealed that the current-voltage characteristics are linear for all thin films signifying that the electrical conduction in CDZS is ohmic in nature.

Impact of Growth Temperature of Lead-Oxide Nanostructures on the Attenuation of Gamma Radiation

Chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique is utilized to grow lead-oxide (PbO) nanostructures (NSs) over PbO seed fabricated by physical vapor deposition (PVD) method on glass substrates. The effect of growth temperatures 50 and 70 °C on the surface topography, optical properties, and crystal structure of lead-oxide NSs has been studied. The investigated results suggested that the growth temperature has a huge and very considerable influence on the PbO NS, and the fabricated PbO NS has been indexed as the Pb₃O₄ polycrystalline tetragonal phase. The crystal size for PbO thin films grown at 50 °C was 85.688 nm and increased to 96.61 nm once the growth temperature reached 70 °C. The fabricated PbO nanofilms show a high rate of transmittance, which are ∼70 and 75% in the visible spectrum for the films deposited at 50 and 70 °C, respectively. The obtained E_g was in the range of 2.099-2.288 eV. Also, the linear attenuation coefficient values of gamma-rays for shielding the Cs-137 radioactive source increased at 50 °C. The transmission factor, mean free path, and half-value layer are reduced at a higher attenuation coefficient of PbO grown at 50 °C. This study evaluates the relationship between synthesized lead-oxide NSs and the radiation energy attenuation of gamma-rays. This study provided a suitable, novel, and flexible protective shield of clothes or an apron made of lead or lead oxide to protect against ionizing radiation that meets safety rules and protects medical workers from ionizing radiation.

Effect of Chemical Bath Deposition Variables on the Properties of Zinc Sulfide Thin Films: A Review

Zinc sulfide (ZnS) thin films prepared using the chemical bath deposition (CBD) method have demonstrated great viability in various uses, encompassing photonics, field emission devices, field emitters, sensors, electroluminescence devices, optoelectronic devices, and are crucial as buffer layers of solar cells. These semiconducting thin films for industrial and research applications are popular among researchers. CBD appears attractive due to its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, low energy consumption, low-temperature compatibility, and superior uniformity for large-area deposition. However, numerous parameters influence the CBD mechanism and the quality of the thin films. This study offers a comprehensive review of the impact of various parameters that can affect different properties of ZnS films grown on CBD. This paper provides an extensive review of the film growth and structural and optical properties of ZnS thin films influenced by various parameters, which include complexing agents, the concentration ratio of the reactants, stirring speed, humidity, deposition temperature, deposition time, pH value, precursor types, and annealing temperature environments. Various studies screened the key influences on the CBD parameters concerning the quality of the resulting films. This work will motivate researchers to provide additional insight into the preparation of ZnS thin films using CBD to optimize this deposition method to its fullest potential.

Effect of Surface Topology on the Apparent Thermal Diffusivity of Thin Samples at LFA Measurements

This paper deals with the problem of the influence of surface topography on the results of thermal diffusivity measurements when determined using the instantaneous surface heat source method, also called the pulse method. The analysis was based on numerical tests carried out using Comsol Multiphysics software. The results of experimental investigations on the actual material structure using an electron microscope, an optical microscope and a profilometer were used to develop a numerical model. The influence of the non-uniformity of the surface of the tested sample on the determined values of half-time of the thermal response of the sample’s rough surface to the impulse forcing on the opposing flat surface was determined by developing the data for simulated measurements. The effect of the position of the response data reading area on the obtained simulation results was also analyzed. The obtained results can be used to improve the accuracy of experimental heat transfer studies performed on thin-film engineering structures depending on the uniformity and parallelism of the material applied to engineering structures. The difference in half-life determination error results for various analyzed models can be as high as 16.7%, depending on the surface from which the responses of the heating impulse are read. With an equivalent model in which 10% of the material volume corresponds to the rough part as a single inclusion, hemisphere, the error in determining thermal diffusivity was equal to 3.8%. An increase in the number of inclusions with smaller weight reduces an error in the determination of thermal diffusivity, as presented in the paper.
