The potential of thermally expanded graphite in oil sorption applications

An oil spill occurs when liquid petroleum hydrocarbons are released into the environment, whether accidentally or intentionally, in substantial quantities. The impact of an oil spill on the ecosystem is significant and should not be underestimated. Various techniques are employed to address oil spills, including mechanical, physical, biological, and physicochemical methods. Among these techniques, adsorption is considered the most suitable approach. Adsorption is promising due to its simplicity, ease of use, high removal capacity, and rapid pollutant removal. An excellent adsorbent material exhibits unique characteristics that enhance its efficacy in liquid adsorption. Sorbents are categorized into synthetic and natural types. Porous carbon materials, especially expanded graphite, are widely utilized in wastewater treatment due to their micropores and exceptional adsorption capacity. The distinctive properties of expanded graphite, including its low density, high porosity, and electrical conductivity, have garnered significant global attention for various potential applications. In essence, expanded graphite offers a powerful and practical approach to oil spill cleanup due to its efficient oil adsorption, selective targeting, ease of use, and potential reusability. This review article summarizes the preparation techniques, structure, and properties of expanded graphite. It also delves into recent advancements in using expanded graphite for oil spill cleanup. The article concludes by outlining potential future directions in this field and discussing the commercial viability of some of these techniques.

Metal-Organic Framework-Enabled Sustainable Agrotechnologies: An Overview of Fundamentals and Agricultural Applications

With aggravated abiotic and biotic stresses from increasing climate change, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as versatile toolboxes for developing environmentally friendly agrotechnologies aligned with agricultural practices and safety. Herein, we have explored MOF-based agrotechnologies, focusing on their intrinsic properties, such as structural and catalytic characteristics. Briefly, MOFs possess a sponge-like porous structure that can be easily stimulated by the external environment, facilitating the controlled release of agrochemicals, thus enabling precise delivery of agrochemicals. Additionally, MOFs offer the ability to remove or degrade certain pollutants by capturing them within their pores, facilitating the development of MOF-based remediation technologies for agricultural environments. Furthermore, the metal-organic hybrid nature of MOFs grants them abundant catalytic activities, encompassing photocatalysis, enzyme-mimicking catalysis, and electrocatalysis, allowing for the integration of MOFs into degradation and sensing agrotechnologies. Finally, the future challenges that MOFs face in agrotechnologies were proposed to promote the development of sustainable agriculture practices.

A critical insight into occurrence and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their green remediation approaches

Over the last century, the tremendous growth in industrial activities particularly in the sectors of pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and the reckless application of fertilizers and insecticides has raised the contamination of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) tremendously. For more than a decade, the main focus of environmental experts is to come up with management approaches for the clean-up of sites polluted with PAHs. These are ubiquitous in nature i.e., widely distributed in ecosystem ranging from soil, air and marine water. Most of the PAHs possess immunotoxicity, carcinogenicity and genotoxicity. Being highly soluble in lipids, they are readily absorbed into the mammalian gastro intestinal tract. They are widely distributed with marked tendency of getting localized into body fat in varied tissues. Several remediation technologies have been tested for the removal of these environmental contaminants, particularly bioremediation has turned out to be a hope as the safest and cost-effective option. Therefore, this review first discusses various sources of PAHs, their effect on human health and interactions of PAHs with soils and sediments. In this review, a holistic insight of current scenario of existing remediation technologies and how they can be improvised along with the hindrances in the path of these technologies are properly addressed.

Nitrobenzene reduction promoted by the integration of carbon nanotubes and Geobacter sulfurreducens

Electron shuttles (ES) can mediate long-distance electron transfer between extracellular respiratory bacteria (ERB) and the surroundings. However, the effects of graphite structure in ES on the extracellular electron transfer (EET) process remain ambiguous. This work investigated the function of graphite structure in the process of nitrobenzene (NB) degradation by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA, in which highly aromatic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was studied as a typical ES. The results showed that the addition of 1.5 g L^-1 of CNTs improved the NB biodegradation up to 81.2%, plus 18.8% NB loss due to the adsorption property of CNTs, achieving complete removal of 200 μM NB within 9 h. The amendment of CNTs greatly increased the EET rate, indicating that graphite structure exhibited excellent electron shuttle performance. Furthermore, Raman spectrum proved that CNTs obtained better graphite structure after 90 h of cultivation with strain PCA, resulting in higher electrochemical performance. Also, CNTs was perceived as the "Contaminant Reservoir", which alleviated the toxic effect of NB and shortened the distance of EET process. Overall, this work focused on the effects of material graphite structure on the EET process, which enriched the understanding of the interaction between CNTs and ERB, and these results might promote their application in the in-situ bioremediation of nitroaromatic-polluted environment.

Porous Materials for Water Purification

Water pollution is a growing threat to humanity due to the pervasiveness of contaminants in water bodies. Significant efforts have been made to separate these hazardous components to purify polluted water through various methods. However, conventional remediation methods suffer from limitations such as low uptake capacity or selectivity, and current water quality standards cannot be met. Recently, advanced porous materials (APMs) have shown promise in improved segregation of contaminants compared to traditional porous materials in uptake capacity and selectivity. These materials feature merits of high surface area and versatile functionality, rendering them ideal platforms for the design of novel adsorbents. This Review summarizes the development and employment of APMs in a variety of water treatments accompanied by assessments of task-specific adsorption performance. Finally, we discuss our perspectives on future opportunities for APMs in water purification.

Effect of Process Parameters on the Graphite Expansion Produced by a Green Modification of the Hummers Method

Adsorption stand out among other standard techniques used for water treatment because of its remarkable simplicity, easy operation, and high removal capability. Expanded graphite has been selected as a promising agent for oil spill adsorption, but its production involves the generation of corrosive remnants and massive amounts of contaminated washing waters. Although the advantageous use of the H2O2–H2SO4 mixture was described in 1978, reported works using this method are scarce. This work deals with the urgent necessity for the development of alternative chemical routes decreasing their environmental impact (based on green chemistry concepts), presenting a process for expanded graphite production using only two intercalation chemicals, reducing the consumption of sulfuric acid to only 10% and avoiding the use of strong oxidant salts (both environmentally detrimental). Three process parameters were evaluated: milling effect, peroxide concentration, and microwave expansion. Some remarkable results were obtained following this route: high specific volumes elevated oil adsorption rate exhibiting a high oil–water selectivity and rapid adsorption. Furthermore, the recycling capability was checked using up to six adsorption cycles. Results showed that milling time reduces the specimen’s expansion rate and oil adsorption capacity due to poor intercalant insertion and generation of small particle sizes.

Recyclable Materials for Ecofriendly Technology

This Special Issue (SI), "Recyclable Materials for Ecofriendly Technology", has been proposed and organized as a means to present recent developments in the field of environmentally friendly designed construction and building materials. For this purpose, dozens of articles were included or considered for inclusion in this SI, covering various aspects of the topic. A comparison of these articles with other modern articles on this topic is carried out, which proves the prospects and relevance of this SI. Furthermore, per the editorial board's journal suggestion, the second volume of this successful SI is being organized, in which authors from various countries and organizations are invited to publish their new and unpublished research work.

Carbon dioxide-enhanced metal release from kerogen

Heavy metals released from kerogen to produced water during oil/gas extraction have caused major enviromental concerns. To curtail water usage and production in an operation and to use the same process for carbon sequestration, supercritical CO₂ (scCO₂) has been suggested as a fracking fluid or an oil/gas recovery agent. It has been shown previously that injection of scCO₂ into a reservoir may cause several chemical and physical changes to the reservoir properties including pore surface wettability, gas sorption capacity, and transport properties. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we here demonstrate that injection of scCO₂ might lead to desorption of physically adsorbed metals from kerogen structures. This process on one hand may impact the quality of produced water. On the other hand, it may enhance metal recovery if this process is used for in-situ extraction of critical metals from shale or other organic carbon-rich formations such as coal.

Exploiting Biofilm Characteristics to Enhance Biological Nutrient Removal in Wastewater Treatment Plants

Biological treatments are integral processes in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). They can be carried out using sludge or biofilm processes. Although the sludge process is effective for biological wastewater systems, it has some drawbacks that make it undesirable. Hence, biofilm processes have gained popularity, since they address the drawbacks of sludge treatments, such as the high rates of sludge production. Although biofilms have been reported to be essential for wastewater, few studies have reviewed the different ways in which the biofilm properties can be explored, especially for the benefit of wastewater treatment. Thus, this review explores the properties of biofilms that can be exploited to enhance biological wastewater systems. In this review, it is revealed that various biofilm properties, such as the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), quorum sensing (Qs), and acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs), can be enhanced as a sustainable and cost-effective strategy to enhance the biofilm. Moreover, the exploitation of other biofilm properties such as the SOS, which is only reported in the medical field, with no literature reporting it in the context of wastewater treatment, is also recommended to improve the biofilm technology for wastewater treatment processes. Additionally, this review further elaborates on ways that these properties can be exploited to advance biofilm wastewater treatment systems. A special emphasis is placed on exploiting these properties in simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and biological phosphorus removal processes, which have been reported to be the most sensitive processes in biological wastewater treatment.

Natural Polymers and Their Nanocomposites Used for Environmental Applications

The aim of this review is to bring together the main natural polymer applications for environmental remediation, as a class of nexus materials with advanced properties that offer the opportunity of integration in single or simultaneous decontamination processes. By identifying the main natural polymers derived from agro-industrial sources or monomers converted by biotechnology into sustainable polymers, the paper offers the main performances identified in the literature for: (i) the treatment of water contaminated with heavy metals and emerging pollutants such as dyes and organics, (ii) the decontamination and remediation of soils, and (iii) the reduction in the number of suspended solids of a particulate matter (PM) type in the atmosphere. Because nanotechnology offers new horizons in materials science, nanocomposite tunable polymers are also studied and presented as promising materials in the context of developing sustainable and integrated products in society to ensure quality of life. As a class of future smart materials, the natural polymers and their nanocomposites are obtained from renewable resources, which are inexpensive materials with high surface area, porosity, and high adsorption properties due to their various functional groups. The information gathered in this review paper is based on the publications in the field from the last two decades. The future perspectives of these fascinating materials should take into account the scale-up, the toxicity of nanoparticles, and the competition with food production, as well as the environmental regulations.

Nanosponges for Water Treatment: Progress and Challenges

Nanosponges have shown promising capabilities for efficient removal of organic/inorganic pollutants from water based on absorption/adsorption and disinfection processes. The application of nanosponges (especially cyclodextrin-based nanosponges) can be considered a cost-effective strategy with minimal energy and time requirements in comparison to other routinely deployed water treatment modalities. These polymers with unique physicochemical properties, architectures, and highly cross-linked three-dimensional networks need to be further explored for removing pollutants with simultaneous eliminations of microbial contaminants from wastewater. Additionally, the surface functionalization of these nanosponges utilizing magnetic, titanium dioxide, and silver nanomaterials can significantly improve their properties for water remediation purposes, although nanosponges altered with carbon nanotubes and metallic nanomaterials/nanocatalysts for water treatment appliances are barely explored. Notably, crucial factors such as adsorbent type/dosage, contact time, competing ions, adsorption isotherm models, kinetics, thermodynamics, and reaction/experimental conditions (e.g., molar ratios, temperature, and pH) are important aspects affecting the adsorption and removal of pollutants using nanosponges. Furthermore, the nanotoxicity and biosafety of these nanosponge-based systems utilized for water treatment should be comprehensively evaluated. Herein, recent advancements in the design and deployment of nanosponge-based systems for removing organic/inorganic pollutants from water and wastewater are deliberated with an emphasis on challenges and perspectives.
