The Effect of Reactive Electric Field-Assisted Sintering of MoS2/Bi2Te3 Heterostructure on the Phase Integrity of Bi2Te3 Matrix and the Thermoelectric Properties

Green Synthesis and Morphological Evolution for Bi2Te3 Nanosystems via a PVP-Assisted Hydrothermal Method

Bi2Te3 has been extensively used because of its excellent thermoelectric properties at room temperature. Here, 230-420 nm of Bi2Te3 hexagonal nanosheets has been successfully synthesized via a "green" method by using ethylene glycol solution and applying polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a surfactant. In addition, factors influencing morphological evolution are discussed in detail in this study. Among these parameters, the reaction temperature, molar mass of NaOH, different surfactants, and reaction duration are considered as the most essential. The results show that the existence of PVP is vital to the formation of a plate-like morphology. The reaction temperature and alkaline surroundings played essential roles in the formation of Bi2Te3 single crystals. By spark plasma sintering, the Bi2Te3 hexagonal nanosheets were hot pressed into solid-state samples. We also studied the transport properties of solid-state samples. The electrical conductivity σ was 18.5 × 103 Sm-1 to 28.69 × 103 Sm-1, and the Seebeck coefficient S was -90.4 to -113.3 µVK-1 over a temperature range of 300-550 K. In conclusion, the observation above could serve as a catalyst for future exploration into photocatalysis, solar cells, nonlinear optics, thermoelectric generators, and ultraviolet selective photodetectors of Bi2Te3 nanosheet-based photodetectors.

Regulating the Configurational Entropy to Improve the Thermoelectric Properties of (GeTe)1-x(MnZnCdTe3)x Alloys

In thermoelectrics, entropy engineering as an emerging paradigm-shifting strategy can simultaneously enhance the crystal symmetry, increase the solubility limit of specific elements, and reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. However, the severe lattice distortion in high-entropy materials blocks the carrier transport and hence results in an extremely low carrier mobility. Herein, the design principle for selecting alloying species is introduced as an effective strategy to compensate for the deterioration of carrier mobility in GeTe-based alloys. It demonstrates that high configurational entropy via progressive MnZnCdTe₃ and Sb co-alloying can promote the rhombohedral-cubic phase transition temperature toward room temperature, which thus contributes to the enhanced density-of-states effective mass. Combined with the reduced carrier concentration via the suppressed Ge vacancies by high-entropy effect and Sb donor doping, a large Seebeck coefficient is attained. Meanwhile, the severe lattice distortions and micron-sized Zn_0.6Cd_0.4Te precipitations restrain the lattice thermal conductivity approaching to the theoretical minimum value. Finally, the maximum zT of Ge_0.82Sb_0.08Te_0.90(MnZnCdTe₃)_0.10 reaches 1.24 at 723 K via the trade-off between the degraded carrier mobility and the improved Seebeck coefficient, as well as the depressed lattice thermal conductivity. These results provide a reference for the implementation of entropy engineering in GeTe and other thermoelectric materials.

Recent Advances in Electronic Skins with Multiple-Stimuli-Responsive and Self-Healing Abilities

Wearable electronic skin (e-skin) has provided a revolutionized way to intelligently sense environmental stimuli, which shows prospective applications in health monitoring, artificial intelligence and prosthetics fields. Drawn inspiration from biological skins, developing e-skin with multiple stimuli perception and self-healing abilities not only enrich their bionic multifunctionality, but also greatly improve their sensory performance and functional stability. In this review, we highlight recent important developments in the material structure design strategy to imitate the fascinating functionalities of biological skins, including molecular synthesis, physical structure design, and special biomimicry engineering. Moreover, their specific structure-property relationships, multifunctional application, and existing challenges are also critically analyzed with representative examples. Furthermore, a summary and perspective on future directions and challenges of biomimetic electronic skins regarding function construction will be briefly discussed. We believe that this review will provide valuable guidance for readers to fabricate superior e-skin materials or devices with skin-like multifunctionalities and disparate characteristics.
