The Synergistic Properties and Gas Sensing Performance of Functionalized Graphene-Based Sensors

Selective Sensing of DNA Nucleobases with Angular Discrimination

The fast and precise selective sensing of DNA nucleobases is a long-pursued method that can lead to huge advances in the field of genomics and have an impact on aspects such as the prevention of diseases, health enhancement, and, in general, all types of medical treatments. We present here a new type of nanoscale sensor based on carbon nanotubes with a specific geometry that can discriminate the type of nucleobase and also its angle of orientation. The proper differentiation of nucleobases is essential to clearly sequence DNA chains, while angular discrimination is key to improving the sensing selectivity. We perform first-principle and quantum transport simulations to calculate the transmission, conductance, and current of the nanotube-based nanoscale sensor in the presence of the four nucleotides (A, C, G, and T), each of them rotated 0, 90, 180, or 270°. Our results show that this system is able to effectively discriminate between the four nucleotides and their angle of orientation. We explain these findings in terms of the interaction between the phosphate group of the nucleotide and the nanotube wall. The phosphate specifically distorts the electronic structure of the nanotube depending on the distance and the orientation and leads to nontrivial changes in the transmission. This work provides a method for finer and more precise sequential DNA chains.

First-principles insights into the C6N7 monolayer as a highly efficient sensor and scavenger for the detection of selective volatile organic compounds

The design of new gas sensors and scavengers of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is desirable for VOC enriching, separation and utilization. Herein, first-principles methods were performed to investigate the potential of C6N7 monolayers as highly efficient sensors and scavengers for selective VOCs (toluene, benzene, vinyl chloride, ethane, methanal, acetone, ethanol, and acetaldehyde). The physisorption of toluene, benzene, acetone, ethanol, acetaldehyde, and methanal has relatively high adsorption strength and can significantly tune the electronic properties and work function (Φ) of the C6N7, indicating that the C6N7 monolayer is highly sensitive and selective to these VOC gases. In addition, the desorption time of benzene, acetone, ethanol, acetaldehyde, and methanal is about 3, 0.4, 2.0 × 10-2, 3.0 × 10-2, and 3.6 × 10-5 s at 300 K, respectively, indicating that the C6N7-based sensor has high reusability at room temperature. The recovery time of toluene was about 7.8 × 102 s at 300 K, showing disposable toluene gas sensing of the monolayer. Our work confirms that the C6N7 monolayer as a resistance-type and Φ-type gas sensor and scavenger is highly sensitive, selective and reusable for VOCs (benzene, acetone, ethanol, acetaldehyde, and methanol), but is a disposable toluene gas sensor and scavenger at room temperature.

Energy Harvesting of Deionized Water Droplet Flow over an Epitaxial Graphene Film on a SiC Substrate

This study investigates energy harvesting by a deionized (DI) water droplet flow on an epitaxial graphene film on a SiC substrate. We obtain an epitaxial single-crystal graphene film by annealing a 4H-SiC substrate. Energy harvesting of the solution droplet flow on the graphene surface has been investigated by using NaCl or HCl solutions. This study validates the voltage generated from the DI water flow on the epitaxial graphene film. The maximum generated voltage was as high as 100 mV, which was a quite large value compared with the previous reports. Furthermore, we measure the dependence of flow direction on electrode configuration. The generated voltages are independent of the electrode configuration, indicating that the DI water flow direction is not influenced by the voltage generation for the single-crystal epitaxial graphene film. Based on these results, the origin of the voltage generation on the epitaxial graphene film is not only an outcome of the fluctuation of the electrical-double layer, resulting in the breaking of the uniform balance of the surface charges, but also other factors such as the charges in the DI water or frictional electrification. In addition, the buffer layer has no effect on the epitaxial graphene film on the SiC substrate.

Artificial Olfactory Biohybrid System: An Evolving Sense of Smell

The olfactory system can detect and recognize tens of thousands of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low concentrations in complex environments. Bioelectronic nose (B-EN), which mimics olfactory systems, is becoming an emerging sensing technology for identifying VOCs with sensitivity and specificity. B-ENs integrate electronic sensors with bioreceptors and pattern recognition technologies to enable medical diagnosis, public security, environmental monitoring, and food safety. However, there is currently no commercially available B-EN on the market. Apart from the high selectivity and sensitivity necessary for volatile organic compound analysis, commercial B-ENs must overcome issues impacting sensor operation and other problems associated with odor localization. The emergence of nanotechnology has provided a novel research concept for addressing these problems. In this work, the structure and operational mechanisms of biomimetic olfactory systems are discussed, with an emphasis on the development and immobilization of materials. Various biosensor applications and current developments are reviewed. Challenges and opportunities for fulfilling the potential of artificial olfactory biohybrid systems in fundamental and practical research are investigated in greater depth.
