Evaluating the X-ray-Shielding Performance of Graphene-Oxide-Coated Nanocomposite Fabric

Views on Radiation Shielding Efficiency of Polymeric Composites/Nanocomposites and Multi-Layered Materials: Current State and Advancements

This article highlights advancements in polymeric composite/nanocomposites processes and applications for improved radiation shielding and high-rate attenuation for the spacecraft. Energetic particles, mostly electrons and protons, can annihilate or cause space craft hardware failures. The standard practice in space electronics is the utilization of aluminum as radiation safeguard and structural enclosure. In space, the materials must be lightweight and capable of withstanding extreme temperature/mechanical loads under harsh environments, so the research has focused on advanced multi-functional materials. In this regard, low-Z materials have been found effective in shielding particle radiation, but their structural properties were not sufficient for the desired space applications. As a solution, polymeric composites or nanocomposites have been produced having enhanced material properties and enough radiation shielding (gamma, cosmic, X-rays, protons, neutrons, etc.) properties along with reduced weight. Advantageously, the polymeric composites or nanocomposites can be layered to form multi-layered shields. Hence, polymer composites/nanocomposites offer promising alternatives to developing materials for efficiently attenuating photon or particle radiation. The latest technology developments for micro/nano reinforced polymer composites/nanocomposites have also been surveyed here for the radiation shielding of space crafts and aerospace structures. Moreover, the motive behind this state-of-the-art overview is to put forward recommendations for high performance design/applications of reinforced nanocomposites towards future radiation shielding technology in the spacecraft.

Flexible and Transparent Ceramic Nanocomposite for Laboratory X-ray Imaging of Micrometer Resolution

Transparent nanocomposites have attracted considerable attention in many areas including X-ray imaging, wearable electronics, and volumetric display. However, both the transparency and the flexibility were largely jeopardized by the loading content of functional nanoparticles (NPs), posing a major challenge to material engineering. Herein, an ultra-high-loading-ceramic nanocomposite film was fabricated by a blade-coating technique. The film exhibited a high transparency over ∼89% in the whole visible region even with a fluoride-ceramic content up to ∼83 wt %. Based on a real-time investigation on the formation process of the film, the refractive-index difference between the nanoparticles and matrix was identified as the dominating factor to transparency. The transmittance spectra based on Rayleigh scattering theory were simulated to screen both nanoparticle radius and loading content, leading to the discovery of a transparency zone for film making. As a proof-of-concept experiment, the transparent film was used as an X-ray scintillation screen, which exhibited a comparable light yield to that of LYSO owing to the mitigated self-absorption effect. The homemade imager demonstrated a spatial resolution of 122 lp/mm, representing a record resolution of 4.1 μm for laboratory X-ray photography. Our work not only provided an experimental procedure to make high-loading functional films but also demonstrated a theoretical model to guide the search for gradients of transparent composites.

Study on the Design, Preparation, and Performance Evaluation of Heat-Resistant Interlayer-Polyimide-Resin-Based Neutron-Shielding Materials

Polymers have an excellent effect in terms of moderating fast neutrons with rich hydrogen and carbon, which plays an indispensable role in shielding devices. As the shielding of neutrons is typically accompanied by the generation of γ-rays, shielding materials are developed from monomers to multi-component composites, multi-layer structures, and even complex structures. In this paper, based on the typical multilayer structure, the integrated design of the shield component structure and the preparation and performance evaluation of the materials is carried out based on the design sample of the heat-resistant lightweight polymer-based interlayer. Through calculation, the component structure of the polymer-based materials and the three-layer thickness of the shield are obtained. The mass fraction of boron carbide accounts for 11% of the polymer-based material. Since the polymer-based material is the weak link of heat resistance of the multilayer shield, in terms of material selection and modification, the B₄C/TiO₂/polyimide molded plate was prepared by the hot-pressing method, and characterization analysis was conducted for its structure and properties. The results show that the ball milling method can mix the materials well and realize the uniform dispersion of B₄C and TiO₂ in the polyimide matrices. Boron carbide particles are evenly distributed in the material. Except for Ti, the other elemental content of the selected areas for mapping is in good agreement with the theoretical values of the elemental content of the system. The prepared B₄C/TiO₂/polyimide molded plate presents excellent thermal properties, and its glass transition temperature and initial thermal decomposition temperature are as high as 363.6 °C and 572.8 °C, respectively. In addition, the molded plate has good toughness performs well in compression resistance, shock resistance, and thermal aging resistance, which allows it to be used for a long time under 300 °C. Finally, the prepared materials are tested experimentally on an americium beryllium neutron source. The experimental results match the simulation results well.
