Abstract
Enzymes are essential catalysts for various chemical reactions in biological systems and often rely on metal ions or cofactors to stabilize their structure or perform functions. Improving enzyme performance has always been an important direction of protein engineering. In recent years, various artificial small molecules have been successfully used in enzyme engineering. The types of enzymatic reactions and metabolic pathways in cells can be expanded by the incorporation of these artificial small molecules either as cofactors or as building blocks of proteins and nucleic acids, which greatly promotes the development and application of biotechnology. In this review, we summarized research on artificial small molecules including biological metal cluster mimics, coenzyme analogs (mNADs), designer cofactors, non-natural nucleotides (XNAs), and non-natural amino acids (nnAAs), focusing on their design, synthesis, and applications as well as the current challenges in synthetic biology.

ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY AND HEALTH 2023; 45:3089-3111. Abstract
Biochar-supported metal oxide nanocomposites as functional materials could help to improve the production and stress tolerance of plants by enhancing the physicochemical properties of biochar. This experiment was carried out to assess the effects of unmodified biochar (30 g kg-1 soil) and biochar-based nanocomposites (BNCs) of iron (30 g BNC-FeO kg-1 soil), zinc (30 g BNC-ZnO kg-1 soil), and a combined form (15 g BNC-FeO + 15 g BNC-ZnO kg-1 soil) on dill (Anethum graveolens L.) plants under various salinity levels (non-saline, 6 and 12 dS m-1). The biochar-related treatments reduced sodium content of the plants, leading to a decline in osmolytes, antioxidant enzymes activities, reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, NADP reduction, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, and salicylic acid in dill leaf tissues. The combined form of BNCs reduced sodium content of leaf tissue by about 22% and 26% under 6 and 12 dS m-1 salinities, respectively. In contrast, addition of biochar, particularly biochar-based nanocomposites to the saline soil, enhanced potassium, iron, and zinc contents of leaf tissue, photosynthetic pigments, leaf water content, oxygen evolution rate, hill reaction and ATPase activities, endogenous indole-3-acetic acid, plant organs biomass, and consequently essential oil yield of plant organs. The combined form of BNCs in comparison with unmodified biochar improved vegetative, inflorescence, and seed biomass under 12 dS m-1 salinity by about 33%, 25%, and 6%, respectively. These findings revealed that BNCs with novel structure can potentially enhance salt tolerance, plant biomass, and essential oil yield of different organs in salt-stressed dill plants through decreasing leaf sodium content and ROS generation and increasing nutrient availability, water status, and photosynthetic pigments.

Abstract
The influence of illumination history of native bacterial reaction centers (BRCs) on the ability of binding and photo-induced oxidation of manganous ions was investigated in the pH range between 8.0 and 9.4. Binding of manganous ions to a buried site required 6 to 11-fold longer incubation periods, depending on the pH, in dark-adapted BRCs than in BRCs that were previously illuminated prior to manganese binding. The intrinsic electron transfer from the bound manganese ion to the photo-oxidized primary electron donor was found to be limited by a 2 to 5-fold slower precursor conformational step in the dark-adapted samples for the same pH range. The conformational gating could be eliminated by photoactivation, namely if the BRCs were illuminated prior to binding. Unlike in Photosystem II, photoactivation in BRCs did not involve cluster assembly. Photoactivation with manganese already bound was only possible at elevated detergent concentration. In addition, also exclusively in dark-adapted BRCs, a marked breaking point in the Arrhenius-plot was discovered around 15 °C at pH 9.4 indicating a change in the reaction mechanism, most likely caused by the change of orientation of the 2-acetyl group of the inactive bacteriochlorophyll monomer located near the manganese binding site.

Abstract
Artificial photosynthesis (AP) has been extensively applied in energy conversion and environment pollutants treatment. Considering the urgent demand for clean energy for human society, many researchers have endeavored to develop materials for AP. Among the materials for AP, photosensitizers play a critical role in light absorption and charge separation. Due to the fact of their excellent tunability and performance, metal-based complexes stand out from many photocatalysis photosensitizers. In this review, the evaluation parameters for photosensitizers are first summarized and then the recent developments in molecular photosensitizers based on transition metal complexes are presented. The photosensitizers in this review are divided into two categories: noble-metal-based and noble-metal-free complexes. The subcategories for each type of photosensitizer in this review are organized by element, focusing first on ruthenium, iridium, and rhenium and then on manganese, iron, and copper. Various examples of recently developed photosensitizers are also presented.

Abstract
A cobalt coordination compound with azo-ligand linkers combined with linked bisulfonate moieties has been argued to be an efficient catalyst for the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) (H.-T. Shi, X.-X. Li, F.-H. Wu and W.-B. Yu, Dalton Trans., 2017, 46, 16321.). In the previously published report, this cobalt compound (compound 1) was believed to display a high turnover frequency (5 s-1) at η = 720 mV at pH 9. Herein, the OER in the presence of compound 1 is reinvestigated. The nanosized oxide-based particles formed after the OER in the presence of compound 1 were tracked by electrochemical methods, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX), X-ray diffraction studies (XRD), (High-resolution) transmission electron microscopy ((HR)TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Based on these experiments, it is proposed that a candidate for the true catalyst of the OER in the presence of compound 1 is cobalt oxide. During the OER and using chronoamperometry, the oxidation state of Co ions for the formed Co oxide is (III), but after consecutive CVs the oxidation states of Co ions for the formed Co oxide are (II) and (III). The results shed new light on the role of Co oxide nanoparticles formed in the presence of this Co coordination compound during the OER. Our experimental data also show that for the OER in the presence of a homogeneous (pre)catalyst, careful analyses to find the role of metal oxides are necessary for informed progress. The present findings also might help to find the mechanism of the OER in the presence of coordination compounds.

Abstract
Bioinspired transformation of small-molecules to energy-related feedstocks is an attractive research area to overcome both the environmental issues and the depletion of fossil fuels. The highly effective metalloenzymes in nature provide blueprints for the utilization of bioinspired metal complexes for artificial photosynthesis. Through simpler structural and functional mimics, the representative herein is the pivotal development of several critical small molecule conversions catalyzed by metal complexes, e.g., water oxidation, proton and CO2 reduction and organic chemical transformation of small molecules. Of great achievement is the establishment of bioinspired metal complexes as catalysts with high stability, specific selectivity and satisfactory efficiency to drive the multiple-electron and multiple-proton processes related to small molecule transformation. Also, potential opportunities and challenges for future development in these appealing areas are highlighted.

Abstract
Herein we report on the synthesis and characterization of nano-sized Mn oxide/silica aerogel with low density as a good catalyst toward water oxidation. The composite was synthesized by a simple and low-cost hydrothermal procedure. In the next step, we studied the composite in the presence of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate and photo-produced Ru(bpy) 33+ as a water-oxidizing catalyst. The low-density composite is a good Mn-based catalyst with turnover frequencies of ~0.3 and 0.5 (mmol O2/(mol Mn·s)) in the presence of Ru(bpy) 33+ and cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate, respectively. In addition to the water-oxidizing activities of the composite under different conditions, its self-healing reaction in the presence of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate was also studied.

Abstract
Herein we report that the reaction of KMnO4 with cobalt nanoparticles coated with multiple graphene layers forms a promising catalyst toward water oxidation. The compound was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electronic spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and atomic absorption spectroscopy. In addition to the Mn oxide-based characteristics of the catalyst, it is a conductive, self-healing, recycling, highly dispersible, magnetically separable, environmentally friendly, and nano-sized catalyst for water oxidation. The turnover frequency for the catalyst toward water oxidation is 0.1 and 0.05 (mmol O2 per mol Mn s) in the presence of cerium(iv) ammonium nitrate and photo-produced Ru(bpy)3(3+).

Abstract
For the first time, we considered Mn oxide/C60 composites as water-oxidizing catalysts. The composites were synthesized by easy and simple procedures, and characterized by some methods. The water-oxidizing activities of these composites were also measured in the presence of cerium(iv) ammonium nitrate. We found that the nanolayered Mn oxide/C60 composites show promising activity toward water oxidation.

Abstract
Eighteen Mn complexes with N-donor and carboxylate ligands have been synthesized and characterized. Three Mn complexes among them are new and are reported for the first time. The reactions of oxygen evolution in the presence of oxone (2KHSO5·KHSO4·K2SO4) and cerium(iv) ammonium nitrate catalyzed by these complexes are studied and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectrometry, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, membrane-inlet mass spectrometry and electrochemistry. Some of these complexes evolve oxygen in the presence of oxone as a primary oxidant. CO2 and MnO4(-) are other products of these reactions. Based on spectroscopic studies, the true catalysts for oxygen evolution in these reactions are different. We proposed that for the oxygen evolution reactions in the presence of oxone, the true catalysts are both high valent Mn complexes and Mn oxides, but for the reactions in the presence of cerium(iv) ammonium nitrate, the active catalyst is most probably a Mn oxide.

Abstract
Herein we consider the mechanism of water oxidation by nanolayered manganese oxide in the presence of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate. Based on membrane-inlet mass spectrometry results, the rate of H2((18))O exchange of μ-O groups on the surface of the nanolayered Mn-K oxide, and studies on water oxidation in the presence of different ratios of acetonitrile/water we propose a mechanism for water oxidation by nanolayered Mn oxides in the presence of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate.

Abstract
Understanding the water oxidation process on small metal oxide complexes is fundamental for developing photocatalysts for solar fuel production. Titanium oxide and manganese oxide complexes have high potential as components of a cheap, nontoxic, and stable photocatalyst. In this theoretical work, the water oxidation process on Mn(x)Ti(2-x)O4 (x = 0-2) clusters is investigated at the BP86 level of theory using two water molecules and fully saturated systems. In the oxidation cycle using two water molecules, Mn reduces the reaction energy; however, Mn does not reduce the reaction energy on the fully saturated system. When two water molecules are used, the highest reaction energy in the water oxidation cycle is lower than 3 eV, but the highest reaction energy is higher than 3 eV on fully saturated systems except for the pure titanium oxide complex which has a highest reaction energy of 2.56 eV. Dehydrogenation processes in the water oxidation cycle require higher energy than the O-O formation or water adsorption processes. The overall dehydrogenation energy is usually smaller on complexes including at least one Mn atom and it is smallest on the Mn2O4 complex that has two water molecules. Considering the highest reaction energy in the overall water oxidation cycle, water oxidation at the manganese atom of MnTiO4 hydrated with two water molecules is the most favorable in energy.

Abstract
There has been a tremendous surge in research on the synthesis of various metal compounds aimed at simulating the water-oxidizing complex (WOC) of photosystem II (PSII). This is crucial because the water oxidation half reaction is overwhelmingly rate-limiting and needs high over-voltage (approx. 1 V), which results in low conversion efficiencies when working at current densities required for hydrogen production via water splitting. Particular attention has been given to the manganese compounds not only because manganese has been used by nature to oxidize water but also because manganese is cheap and environmentally friendly. The manganese-calcium cluster in PSII has a dimension of about approximately 0.5 nm. Thus, nano-sized manganese compounds might be good structural and functional models for the cluster. As in the nanometre-size of the synthetic models, most of the active sites are at the surface, these compounds could be more efficient catalysts than micrometre (or bigger) particles. In this paper, we focus on nano-sized manganese oxides as functional and structural models of the WOC of PSII for hydrogen production via water splitting and review nano-sized manganese oxides used in water oxidation by some research groups.
