The Effects of Absorbing Materials on the Homogeneity of Composite Heating by Microwave Radiation

When cured in a microwave, flat thin composite panels can experience even heat distribution throughout the laminate. However, as load and geometric complexity increase, the electromagnetic field and resulting heat distribution is altered, making it difficult to cure the composite homogeneously. Materials that absorb and/or reflect incident electromagnetic radiation have the potential to influence how the field behaves, and therefore to tailor and improve the uniformity of heat distribution. In this study, an absorber was applied to a composite with non-uniform geometry to increase heating in the location which had previously been the coldest position, transforming it into the hottest. Although this result overshot the desired outcome of temperature uniformity, it shows the potential of absorbing materials to radically change the temperature distribution, demonstrating that with better regulation of the absorbing effect, a uniform temperature distribution is possible even in non-uniform composite geometries.

Nanoclay Intercalation During Foaming of Polymeric Nanocomposites Studied in-Situ by Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction

The intercalation degree of nanoclays in polymeric foamed nanocomposites containing clays is a key parameter determining the final properties of the material, but how intercalation occurs is not fully understood. In this work, energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (ED-XRD) of synchrotron radiation was used as an in-situ technique to deepen into the intercalation process of polymer/nanoclay nanocomposites during foaming. Foamable nanocomposites were prepared by the melt blending route using low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) with surface treated nanoclays and azodicarbonamide (ADC) as the blowing agent. Foaming was induced by heating at atmospheric pressure. The time and temperature evolution of the interlamellar distance of the clay platelets in the expanding nanocomposites was followed. Upon foaming, interlamellar distances of the nanocomposites based on LDPE and PP increase by 18% and 16% compared to the bulk foamable nanocomposite. Therefore, the foaming process enhances the nanoclay intercalation degree in these systems. This effect is not strongly affected by the type of nanoclay used in LDPE, but by the type of polymer used. Besides, the addition of nanoclays to PP and PS has a catalytic effect on the decomposition of ADC, i.e., the decomposition temperature is reduced, and the amount of gas released increases. This effect was previously proved for LDPE.

Effect of mixing parameters on the mechanical and thermal properties of a nanoclay-modified epoxy resin

The present work deals with the effect of the sonication amplitude and the mixing time on the mechanical and thermal properties of an epoxy (EP) resin modified with 1 wt% nanoclay. It was confirmed that the mechanical properties of the EP matrix were dependent on the dispersion of nanoclays which in turn are affected by the mixing parameters. At short mixing times, the impact strength (IS) increased with increasing amplitude. Maximum IS and flexural properties values were obtained with ultrasonic amplitude of 260 μm and a mixing time of 10 min. The effect of mixing time was more pronounced on the deflection temperature under load than the sonication amplitude. Moreover, it was shown that longer mixing times resulted in a smoother nanocomposite fracture surface with only few cracks. The fracture surfaces of the EP nanocomposites were rough with significant plastic deformations and several microcracks with nanoparticles embedded in the polymer matrix.
