Effect of Heat Treatment on the Physical Properties of Provisional Crowns during Polymerization: An in Vitro Study

Effects of various beverages on characteristics of provisional restoration materials

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of common beverages on four currently used provisional restoration materials: Protemp®4, Integrity®, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) block, and acrylic resin. Flowable resin composite is included as a control group.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Each material was formed into disks of 10-mm diameter and 4-mm thickness (N = 40) by loading the material into acrylic molds. The exposed surface in the mold was covered using a glass slide to prevent an oxygen inhibition layer, and polymerization then proceeded. The solidified disks were placed in distilled water for 24 h. These samples (n = 8) were then immersed for 14 days in one of four different beverages: water, orange juice, cola, and coffee. Changes in color dimension, hardness, and roughness were observed and then analyzed using two-way repeated analysis of variance.

RESULTS

The provisional materials had more obvious changes in all three color dimensions than the flowable resin composite. Integrity showed the biggest changes, followed by acrylic resin and PMMA block, whereas Protemp had the smallest changes. The hardness of all the materials significantly decreased after immersion in any of the beverages for 14 days. There were no changes in surface roughness when the materials were immersed in distilled water. The surface roughness of the PMMA block significantly decreased in orange juice whereas that of Integrity and acrylic resin significantly increased in cola.

CONCLUSION

Different kinds of provisional materials had different degrees of staining due to their composition. Moisture had a significant influence on the hardness of materials, and the acidity of cola significantly roughened the surface of the provisional materials.

Biaxial flexural strength of different provisional restorative materials under chemo-mechanical aging: An in vitro study

PURPOSE

Durability is a critical factor for the success of long-term provisional restorations. This study evaluated the effect of different storage media and cyclic loading on the biaxial flexural strength of different types of provisional materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Discs (N = 360, 10 × 2 mm) were prepared from different provisional materials; conventional (Protemp 4, Tuff-Temp, Tempron), CAD-CAM milled (VITA CAD-Temp, breCAM.multiCOM), and 3D-printed (Nextdent C&B MFH) (n = 60). Each material group was subdivided into four subgroups according to the storage media (n = 15): nonaged, artificial saliva, mouthwash, and coffee. The specimens in storage media were placed in an incubator at 37°C for 4 weeks followed by 60,000 simulated chewing cycles. Biaxial flexural strength test was done. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. Weibull distribution parameters were estimated.

RESULTS

Both the material and aging protocol showed a significant effect on the biaxial flexural strength. Both Protemp 4 and Nextdent C&B MFH showed a significantly higher biaxial flexural strength before and after aging compared to all other materials. Protemp 4 and Tuff Temp showed a significant decrease in strength with aging. CAD-CAM materials showed higher Weibull moduli.

CONCLUSIONS

The 3D-printed polymethylmethacrylate provisional material presents with both greater biaxial flexural strength and increased durability against chemical and mechanical aging compared to conventional and CAD-CAM milled provisional materials tested.

A study on the characteristics of resin composites for provisional restorations

In this study, we evaluated the characteristics of five commercial resin composites used for provisional restorations. The inorganic filler contents of the resins were measured, and three-point bending, wear, surface hardness, water absorption, and staining tests were performed. The specimens underwent additional three-point bending tests after water storage and undergoing thermal stresses at 5°C and 55°C (10,000 cycles). Data were analyzed using one- or two-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni post-hoc tests. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used for pairwise comparisons. Each resin composite presented with different mechanical properties, based on variations in the inorganic filler content. The flexural strength of each resin composite was significantly decreased after water storage. There has a positive correlation between flexural strength and dynamic hardness but a negative correlation between flexural strength and maximum wear depth. The types and contents of the inorganic fillers, the composition of the monomer in the resin matrix, and the addition of plasticizers can affect the properties of the material.

Effects of Different Amine Activators on the Monomer Conversion, Biaxial Flexural Strength, and Color Stability of Experimental Provisional Dental Restorations

Objective  The aim was to assess the effect of different amine activators including N, N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (DMPT) or Na-N-tolyglycine glycidyl methacrylate (NTGGMA) on chemical-activated monomer conversion, biaxial flexural strength (BFS), and color stability of composites for provisional dental restorations.

Materials and Methods  Two formulations of composites containing either DMPT (D-temp) or NTGGMA (N-temp) were prepared. The degree of monomer conversion was assessed. The BFS of the materials was tested using the ball-on-ring testing jig. The color difference (∆E ₀₀ ) of the materials after immersion in water was also determined. The commercial comparisons were Unifast (UF), Protemp (PT), Luxacrown, and Luxatemp (LT).

Results  The monomer conversion of D-temp (57.4 ± 1.3%) was comparable to that of N-temp (59.0 ± 1.3%). The conversion of both D-temp and N-temp were higher than that of PT (48.1 ± 3.4%) and LT (48.0 ± 1.6%). BFS of both D-temp (164.2 ± 18.1 MPa) and N-temp (168.6 ± 8.9 MPa) were comparable but higher than that of UF (119.8 ± 13.6 MPa). ∆E ₀₀ of D-temp (2.7 ± 0.7) and N-temp (2.5 ± 0.8) were comparable but higher than that of other commercial materials (0.6–1.2).

Conclusion  The use of DMPT or NTGGMA showed negligible effect on monomer conversion, BFS, and color stability of the experimental provisional restorations. The conversion and BFS of the experimental materials were in the range of that obtained from commercial bis-acryl-based materials. However, the color stability of the experimental materials was lower than that of commercial materials.

Comparison of fracture strength after thermo-mechanical aging between provisional crowns made with CAD/CAM and conventional method

PURPOSE

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the fracture strength and fracture patterns of provisional crowns fabricated from different materials and techniques after receiving stress from a simulated oral condition.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A monomethacrylate-based resin (Unifast Trad) and a bis-acryl-based (Protemp 4) resin were used to fabricate provisional crowns using conventional direct technique. A milled monomethacrylate resin (Brylic Solid) and a 3D-printed bis-acrylate resin (Freeprint Temp) were chosen to fabricate provisional crowns using the CAD/CAM process. All cemented provisional crowns (n=10/group) were subjected to thermal cycling (5,000 cycles at 5°-55℃) and cyclic occlusal load (100 N at 4 Hz for 100,000 cycles). Maximum force at fracture was tested using a universal testing machine.

RESULTS

Maximum force at fracture (mean ± SD, N) of each group was 657.87 ± 82.84 for Unifast Trad, 1125.94 ± 168.07 for Protemp4, 953.60 ± 58.88 for Brylic Solid, and 1004.19 ± 122.18 for Freeprint Temp. One-way ANOVA with Tamhane post hoc test showed that the fracture strength of Unifast Trad was statistically significantly lower than others (P<.01). No statistically significant difference was noted among other groups. For failure pattern analysis, Unifast Trad and Brylic Solid showed less damage than Protemp 4 and Freeprint Temp groups.

CONCLUSION

Provisional crowns fabricated using the CAD/CAM process and the conventionally fabricated bis-acryl resins exhibited significant higher fracture strength compared to conventionally fabricated monomethacrylate resins after the aging regimen. Therefore, CAD/CAM milling and 3D printing of provisional restorations may be good alternatives for long term provisionalization.

Elastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic contributions to compliance during deformation under stress in prosthodontic temporization materials

Purpose: The goal of this investigation was to characterize the compliance properties in selected polymers used for temporary (provisional crown and bridge) applications.

Method: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)- and polyethyl methacrylate (PEMA)-based JET and TRIM II were investigated along with two bisacryl composite resins (LUXATEMP and PROTEMP 3 GARANT). Rectangular samples of the resins were subjected to creep–recovery tests in a dynamic mechanical analyzer at and near the oral temperature (27 °C, 37 °C and 47 °C). The instantaneous (elastic), and time-dependent viscoelastic, and viscoplastic compliance profiles of the materials were determined and analyzed as a function of materials and temperature.

Results: Highly significant (p = 0.0001) differences among means of elastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic compliance values were found as a function of materials. TRIM II showed an order of magnitude higher viscoplastic deformation than the other three materials (LUXATEMP, PROTEMP 3 GARANT and JET).

Conclusions: The results indicate that PEMA is susceptible to significantly greater elastic, viscoelastic, and more importantly to viscoplastic compliant behavior compared with bisacryl composite and PMMA provisional crown and bridge materials. This indicates high-dimensional instability and poor stiffness and resiliency in PEMA appliances vis-à-vis those of PMMA and bisacryl composites.
