Using Resistin, Glucose, Age and BMI and Pruning Fuzzy Neural Network for the Construction of Expert Systems in the Prediction of Breast Cancer

Feature-based detection of breast cancer using convolutional neural network and feature engineering

Breast cancer (BC) is a prominent cause of female mortality on a global scale. Recently, there has been growing interest in utilizing blood and tissue-based biomarkers to detect and diagnose BC, as this method offers a non-invasive approach. To improve the classification and prediction of BC using large biomarker datasets, several machine-learning techniques have been proposed. In this paper, we present a multi-stage approach that consists of computing new features and then sorting them into an input image for the ResNet50 neural network. The method involves transforming the original values into normalized values based on their membership in the Gaussian distribution of healthy and BC samples of each feature. To test the effectiveness of our proposed approach, we employed the Coimbra and Wisconsin datasets. The results demonstrate efficient performance improvement, with an accuracy of 100% and 100% using the Coimbra and Wisconsin datasets, respectively. Furthermore, the comparison with existing literature validates the reliability and effectiveness of our methodology, where the normalized value can reduce the misclassified samples of ML techniques because of its generality.

Recurrent general type-2 fuzzy neural networks for nonlinear dynamic systems identification

This paper introduces a recurrent general type-2 Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy neural network (RGT2-TSKFNN) for the identification of nonlinear systems. In the proposed structure, the general type-2 fuzzy set (GT2FS) and a recurrent fuzzy neural network (RFNN) are combined to obviate the data uncertainties. The fuzzy firing strengths in the developed structure are returned to the network input as internal variables. In the proposed structure, GT2FS is utilized to characterize the antecedent parts while the consequent parts are performed using TSK type. The issues of constructing a RGT2-TSKFNN involve type reduction, structure learning as well as parameter learning. An efficient strategy is developed by utilizing alpha-cuts to decompose a GT2FS into several interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs). In order to solve the computation time of the type-reduction issue, a direct defuzzification method is used instead of iterative nature of Karnik-Mendel​ (KM) algorithm. Type-2 fuzzy clustering and Lyapunov criteria are utilized for online structure learning as well as the antecedent and consequent parameters, respectively for reducing the number of rules and guaranteeing the stability of the proposed RGT2-TSKFNN. The reported comparative analysis of the simulation results is utilized to estimate the performance of the proposed RGT2-TSKFNN with respect to other popular type-2 FNNs (T2FNNs) methodologies.

Deep Neural Networks and Machine Learning Radiomics Modelling for Prediction of Relapse in Mantle Cell Lymphoma

Abstract

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare lymphoid malignancy with a poor prognosis characterised by frequent relapse and short durations of treatment response. Most patients present with aggressive disease, but there exist indolent subtypes without the need for immediate intervention. The very heterogeneous behaviour of MCL is genetically characterised by the translocation t(11;14)(q13;q32), leading to Cyclin D1 overexpression with distinct clinical and biological characteristics and outcomes. There is still an unfulfilled need for precise MCL prognostication in real-time. Machine learning and deep learning neural networks are rapidly advancing technologies with promising results in numerous fields of application. This study develops and compares the performance of deep learning (DL) algorithms and radiomics-based machine learning (ML) models to predict MCL relapse on baseline CT scans. Five classification algorithms were used, including three deep learning models (3D SEResNet50, 3D DenseNet, and an optimised 3D CNN) and two machine learning models based on K-nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Random Forest (RF). The best performing method, our optimised 3D CNN, predicted MCL relapse with a 70% accuracy, better than the 3D SEResNet50 (62%) and the 3D DenseNet (59%). The second-best performing method was the KNN-based machine learning model (64%) after principal component analysis for improved accuracy. Our optimised CNN developed by ourselves correctly predicted MCL relapse in 70% of the patients on baseline CT imaging. Once prospectively tested in clinical trials with a larger sample size, our proposed 3D deep learning model could facilitate clinical management by precision imaging in MCL.

Artificial Intelligence Analysis of Gene Expression Predicted the Overall Survival of Mantle Cell Lymphoma and a Large Pan-Cancer Series

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a subtype of mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by a poor prognosis. First, we analyzed a series of 123 cases (GSE93291). An algorithm using multilayer perceptron artificial neural network, radial basis function, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), and conventional statistics, correlated 20,862 genes with 28 MCL prognostic genes for dimensionality reduction, to predict the patients' overall survival and highlight new markers. As a result, 58 genes predicted survival with high accuracy (area under the curve = 0.9). Further reduction identified 10 genes: KIF18A, YBX3, PEMT, GCNA, and POGLUT3 that associated with a poor survival; and SELENOP, AMOTL2, IGFBP7, KCTD12, and ADGRG2 with a favorable survival. Correlation with the proliferation index (Ki67) was also made. Interestingly, these genes, which were related to cell cycle, apoptosis, and metabolism, also predicted the survival of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (GSE10846, n = 414), and a pan-cancer series of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA, n = 7289), which included the most relevant cancers (lung, breast, colorectal, prostate, stomach, liver, etcetera). Secondly, survival was predicted using 10 oncology panels (transcriptome, cancer progression and pathways, metabolic pathways, immuno-oncology, and host response), and TYMS was highlighted. Finally, using machine learning, C5 tree and Bayesian network had the highest accuracy for prediction and correlation with the LLMPP MCL35 proliferation assay and RGS1 was made. In conclusion, artificial intelligence analysis predicted the overall survival of MCL with high accuracy, and highlighted genes that predicted the survival of a large pan-cancer series.

RNN- and CNN-based weed detection for crop improvement: An overview

Introduction. Deep learning is a modern technique for image processing and data analysis with promising results and great potential. Successfully applied in various fields, it has recently entered the field of agriculture to address such agricultural problems as disease identification, fruit/plant classification, fruit counting, pest identification, and weed detection. The latter was the subject of our work. Weeds are harmful plants that grow in crops, competing for things like sunlight and water and causing crop yield losses. Traditional data processing techniques have several limitations and consume a lot of time. Therefore, we aimed to take inventory of deep learning networks used in agriculture and conduct experiments to reveal the most efficient ones for weed control. Study objects and methods. We used new advanced algorithms based on deep learning to process data in real time with high precision and efficiency. These algorithms were trained on a dataset containing real images of weeds taken from Moroccan fields. Results and discussion. The analysis of deep learning methods and algorithms trained to detect weeds showed that the Convolutional Neural Network is the most widely used in agriculture and the most efficient in weed detection compared to others, such as the Recurrent Neural Network. Conclusion. Since the Convolutional Neural Network demonstrated excellent accuracy in weed detection, we adopted it in building a smart system for detecting weeds and spraying them in place.

Artificial Neural Network Analysis of Gene Expression Data Predicted Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Subtypes with High Accuracy

Predictive analytics using artificial intelligence is a useful tool in cancer research. A multilayer perceptron neural network used gene expression data to predict the lymphoma subtypes of 290 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (GSE132929). The input layer included both the whole array of 20,863 genes and a cancer transcriptome panel of 1769 genes. The output layer was lymphoma subtypes, including follicular lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, Burkitt lymphoma, and marginal zone lymphoma. The neural networks successfully classified the cases consistent with the lymphoma subtypes, with an area under the curve (AUC) that ranged from 0.87 to 0.99. The most relevant predictive genes were LCE2B, KNG1, IGHV7_81, TG, C6, FGB, ZNF750, CTSV, INGX, and COL4A6 for the whole set; and ARG1, MAGEA3, AKT2, IL1B, S100A7A, CLEC5A, WIF1, TREM1, DEFB1, and GAGE1 for the cancer panel. The characteristic predictive genes for each lymphoma subtypes were also identified with high accuracy (AUC = 0.95, incorrect predictions = 6.2%). Finally, the topmost relevant 30 genes of the whole set, which belonged to apoptosis, cell proliferation, metabolism, and antigen presentation pathways, not only predicted the lymphoma subtypes but also the overall survival of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (series GSE10846, n = 414 cases), and most relevant cancer subtypes of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) consortium including carcinomas of breast, colorectal, lung, prostate, and gastric, melanoma, etc. (7441 cases). In conclusion, neural networks predicted the non-Hodgkin lymphoma subtypes with high accuracy, and the highlighted genes also predicted the survival of a pan-cancer series.

Iterative principal component analysis method for improvised classification of breast cancer disease using blood sample analysis

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women occurring worldwide. Some of the procedures used to diagnose breast cancer are mammogram, breast ultrasound, biopsy, breast magnetic resonance imaging, and blood tests such as complete blood count. Detecting breast cancer at an early stage plays an important role in diagnostic and curative procedures. This paper aims to develop a predictive model for detecting the breast cancer using blood samples data containing age, body mass index (BMI), glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment (HOMA), leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and chemokine monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1).The two main challenges encountered in this process are identification of biomarkers and the precision of disease prediction accuracy. The proposed methodology employs principal component analysis in a peculiar approach followed by random forest tree prediction model to discriminate between healthy and breast cancer patients. This approach extracts high communalities, a linear combination of input attributes in a systematic procedure as principal axis elements. The iteratively extracted principal axis elements combined with minimum number of input attributes are able to predict the disease with higher accuracy of classification with increased sensitivity and specificity score. The results proved that the proposed approach generates a higher predictor performance than the previous reported results by opting relevant extracted principal axis elements and attributes that commend the classifier with increased performance measures.

An intelligent Bayesian hybrid approach to help autism diagnosis

This paper proposes a Bayesian hybrid approach based on neural networks and fuzzy systems to construct fuzzy rules to assist experts in detecting features and relations regarding the presence of autism in human beings. The model proposed in this paper works with a database generated through mobile devices that deals with diagnoses of autistic characteristics in human beings who answer a series of questions in a mobile application. The Bayesian model works with the construction of Gaussian fuzzy neurons in the first and logical neurons in the second layer of the model to form a fuzzy inference system connected to an artificial neural network that activates a robust output neuron. The new fuzzy neural network model was compared with traditional state-of-the-art machine learning models based on high-dimensional based on real-world data sets comprising the autism occurrence in children, adults, and adolescents. The results (97.73- Children/94.32-Adolescent/97.28-Adult) demonstrate the efficiency of our new method in determining children, adolescents, and adults with autistic traits (being among the top performers among all ML models tested), can generate knowledge about the dataset through fuzzy rules.

A five-year (2015 to 2019) analysis of studies focused on breast cancer prediction using machine learning: A systematic review and bibliometric analysis

The objective 1 of this study was to investigate trends in breast cancer (BC) prediction using machine learning (ML) publications by analysing country, first author, journal, institutional collaborations and co-occurrence of author keywords. The objective 2 was to provide a review of studies on BC prediction using ML and a blood analysis dataset (Breast Cancer Coimbra Dataset [BCCD]), and the objective 3 was to provide a brief review of studies based on BC prediction using ML and patients' fine needle aspirate cytology data (Wisconsin Breast Cancer Dataset [WBCD]). The design of this study was as follows: for objective 1: bibliometric analysis, data source PubMed (2015-2019); for objective 2: systematic review, data source: Google and Google Scholar (2018-2019); for objective 3: systematic review, data source: Google Scholar (2016-2019). The inclusion criteria for objective 1 were all publication results yielded from the searches. All English papers that had a 'PDF' option from the search results were included for objective 2. A sample of the 'PDF' English papers were included for objective 3. All 116 female patients from the BCCD, consisting of 64 positive BC patients and 52 controls were included in the study for objective 2. For the WBCD, all 699 female patients comprising of 458 with a benign BC tumour and 241 with a malignant BC tumour were included for objective 3. All 2928 publications were included for objective 1. The results showed that the United States of America (USA) produced the highest number of publications (n=803). In total, 2419 first authors contributed towards the publications. Breast Cancer Research and Treatment was the highest ranked journal. Institutional collaborations mainly occurred within the USA. The use of ML for BC screening and detection was the most researched topic. A total of 19 distinct papers were included for objectives 2 and 3. The findings from these studies were never presented to clinicians for validations. In conclusion, the use of ML for BC screening and detection is promising.

An effective approach for breast cancer diagnosis based on routine blood analysis features

Breast cancer is a widespread disease and one of the primary causes of cancer mortality among women all over the world. Computer-aided methods are used to assist medical doctors to make early diagnosis of the disease. The aim of this study is to build an effective prediction model for breast cancer diagnosis based on anthropometric data and parameters collected through routine blood analysis. The proposed approach innovatively exploits principal component analysis (PCA) technique cascaded by median filtering so as to transform original features into a form of containing less distractive noise not to cause overfitting. Since a generalized regression neural network (GRNN) model is adopted to classify patterns of the transformed features, the computational load imposed in the training of artificial neural network model is kept minimized thanks to the non-iterative nature of GRNN training. The proposed method has been devised and tested on the recent Breast Cancer Coimbra Dataset (BCCD) that contains 9 clinical features measured for each of 116 subjects. Outperforming all of the existing studies on BCCD, our method achieved a mean accuracy rate of 0.9773. Experimental results evidence that this study achieves the best prediction performance ever reported on this dataset. The fact that our proposed approach has accomplished such a boosted performance of breast cancer diagnosis based on routine blood analysis features offers a great potential to be used in a widespread manner to detect the disease in its inception phase. Detection of Anomalies in Large-Scale Cyberattacks Using Fuzzy Neural Networks

The fuzzy neural networks are hybrid structures that can act in several contexts of the pattern classification, including the detection of failures and anomalous behaviors. This paper discusses the use of an artificial intelligence model based on the association between fuzzy logic and training of artificial neural networks to recognize anomalies in transactions involved in the context of computer networks and cyberattacks. In addition to verifying the accuracy of the model, fuzzy rules were obtained through knowledge from the massive datasets to form expert systems. The acquired rules allow the creation of intelligent systems in high-level languages with a robust level of identification of anomalies in Internet transactions, and the accuracy of the results of the test confirms that the fuzzy neural networks can act in anomaly detection in high-security attacks in computer networks.

Hybrid Model for Parkinson’s Disease Prediction

Parkinson’s is a chronic, progressive neurological disease with no known cause that affects the central nervous system of older people and compromises their movement. This disorder can impair daily aspects of people and therefore identify their existence early, helps in choosing treatments that can reduce the impact of the disease on the patient’s routine. This work aims to identify Parkinson’s traces through a voice recording replications database applied to a fuzzy neural network to identify their patterns and enable the extraction of knowledge about situations present in the data collected in patients. The results obtained by the hybrid model were superior to state of the art for the theme, proving that it is possible to perform hybrid models in the extraction of knowledge and the classification of behavioral patterns of high accuracy Parkinson’s.

Fuzzy Rules to Help Predict Rains and Temperatures in a Brazilian Capital State Based on Data Collected from Satellites

The forecast for rainfall and temperatures in underdevelope countries can help in the definition of public and private investment strategies in preventive and corrective nature. Water is an essential element for the economy and living things. This study had a main objective to use an intelligent hybrid model capable of extracting fuzzy rules from a historical series of temperatures and rainfall indices of the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, more specifically in the capital. Because this is state has several rivers fundamental to the Brazilian economy, this study intended to find knowledge in the data of the problem to help public managers and private investors to act dynamically in the prediction of future temperatures and how they can interfere in the decisions related to the population of the state. The results confirm that the intelligent hybrid model can act with efficiency in the generation of predictions about the temperatures and average rainfall indices, being an efficient tool to predict the water situation in the future of this critical state for Brazil.

Pruning Fuzzy Neural Network Applied to the Construction of Expert Systems to Aid in the Diagnosis of the Treatment of Cryotherapy and Immunotherapy

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is related to frequent cases of cervical cancer and genital condyloma in humans. Up to now, numerous methods have come into existence for the prevention and treatment of this disease. In this context, this paper aims to help predict the susceptibility of the patient to forms treatment using both cryotherapy and immunotherapy. These studies facilitate the choice of medications, which can be painful and embarrassing for patients who have warts on intimate parts. However, the use of intelligent models generates efficient results but does not allow a better interpretation of the results. To solve the problem, we present the method of a fuzzy neural network (FNN). A hybrid model capable of solving complex problems and extracting knowledge from the database will pruned through F-score techniques to perform pattern classification in the treatment of warts, and to produce a specialist system based on if/then rules, according to the experience obtained from the database collected through medical research. Finally, binary pattern-classification tests realized in the FNN and compared with other models commonly used for classification tasks capture results of greater accuracy than the current state of the art for this type of problem (84.32% for immunotherapy, and 88.64% for cryotherapy), and extract fuzzy rules from the problem database. It was found that the hybrid approach based on neural networks and fuzzy systems can be an excellent tool to aid the prediction of cryotherapy and immunotherapy treatments.
