Industrial Wastewater Treatment by Nanofiltration-a Case Study on the Anodizing Industry

Performances of PTFE and PVDF membranes in achieving the discharge limit of mixed anodic oxidation coating wastewaters treated by membrane distillation

The mixed wastewater generated by anodic oxidation coating facilities contains high levels of various contaminants, including iron, aluminum, conductivity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and sulfate. In this study, the effectiveness of the membrane distillation (MD) process using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes was investigated to treat mixed wastewater from an anodized coating factory. The results indicate that both hydrophobic membranes effectively removed targeted contaminants. However, the PTFE membrane achieved higher removal efficiencies, with over 99% removal of sulfate, conductivity, iron, and aluminum, 85.7% of COD, and 86% of total organic carbon (TOC). In contrast, the PVDF membrane exhibited a significant decline in removal efficiency as the temperature increased and performed well only at lower feed temperatures. The PTFE membranes outperformed the PVDF membranes in treating chemically intensive anodic oxidation wastewaters. This superiority can be attributed to the PTFE membrane's morphology and structure, which are less influenced by feed water temperature and chemicals. Additionally, its slippery surface imparts anti-adhesion properties, effectively preventing membrane fouling, and maintaining the treated water quality and flux for longer operation time.

Anion Exchange Membrane Based on BPPO/PECH with Net Structure for Acid Recovery via Diffusion Dialysis

In order to improve the performance of the anion exchange membrane (AEM) used in acid recovery from industrial wastewater, this study adopted a new strategy in which brominated poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenyleneoxide) (BPPO) and polyepichlorohydrin (PECH) were used as the polymer backbone of the prepared membrane. The new anion exchange membrane with a net structure was formed by quaternizing BPPO/PECH with N,N,N,N-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine (TMHD). The application performance and physicochemical property of the membrane were adjusted by changing the content of PECH. The experimental study found that the prepared anion exchange membrane had good mechanical performance, thermostability, acid resistance and an appropriate water absorption and expansion ratio. The acid dialysis coefficient (U_H⁺) of anion exchange membranes with different contents of PECH and BPPO was 0.0173-0.0262 m/h at 25 °C. The separation factors (S) of the anion exchange membranes were 24.6 to 27.0 at 25 °C. Compared with the commercial BPPO membrane (DF-120B), the prepared membrane had higher values of U_H⁺ and S in this paper. In conclusion, this work indicated that the prepared BPPO/PECH anion exchange membrane had the potential for acid recovery using the DD method.

Design of Enzyme Loaded W/O Emulsions by Direct Membrane Emulsification for CO2 Capture

Membrane-based gas separation is a promising unit operation in a low-carbon economy due to its simplicity, ease of operation, reduced energy consumption and portability. A methodology is proposed to immobilise enzymes in stable water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions produced by direct membrane emulsification systems and thereafter impregnated them in the pores of a membrane producing emulsion-based supported liquid membranes. The selected case-study was for biogas (CO₂ and CH₄) purification. Upon initial CO₂ sorption studies, corn oil was chosen as a low-cost and non-toxic bulk phase (oil phase). The emulsions were prepared with Nadir^® UP150 P flat-sheet polymeric membranes. The optimised emulsions consisted of 2% Tween 80 (w/w) in corn oil as the continuous phase and 0.5 g.L^-1 carbonic anhydrase enzyme with 5% PEG 300 (w/w) in aqueous solution as the dispersed phase. These emulsions were impregnated onto a porous hydrophobic PVDF membrane to prepare a supported liquid membrane for gas separation. Lastly, gas permeability studies indicated that the permeability of CO₂ increased by ~15% and that of CH₄ decreased by ~60% when compared to the membrane without carbonic anhydrase. Thus, a proof-of-concept for enhancement of CO₂ capture using emulsion-based supported liquid membrane was established.

Simulation and Operational Optimization of RO Based Desalination for Coal-Fired Power Plants’ Wastewater

Focusing on the problems of opaqueness and high energy consumption in coal-fired power plant wastewater recycling processes, this paper studies the simulation and operational optimization of coal-fired power plant wastewater treatment by taking a coal-fired power plant system in Inner Mongolia as an example. Firstly, based on the solution–diffusion theory, pressure drop, and osmotic concentration polarization, a mechanistic model equation for coal-fired power plant wastewater treatment is developed. Secondly, the equation fitness and equation parameters are calibrated to obtain an accurate model. Thirdly, the system is simulated and analyzed so as to obtain the influence and change trajectories of different feed flowrates, temperatures, pressures, and concentrations on various aspects of the system’s performance, such as water recovery rate, salt rejection rate, and so on. Finally, in order to reduce the operating cost of the system, an optimization analysis is carried out, with the lowest specific energy consumption and average daily operating cost as optimization goals, and the performance changes of the system before and after optimization under three different working conditions are compared. The results show that adopting the given optimal strategy can significantly reduce the system’s operational cost. This research is helpful for the digitization and low-carbon operation of coal-fired power plant wastewater treatment systems.

Euler’s Numerical Method for Ions Rejection Reassessment of a Defect-Free Synthesized Nanofiltration Membrane with Ultrathin Titania Film as the Selective Layer

Titanium (Ti) nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully seeded on the platform of a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane previously coated with bio-glue (a co-deposition of dopamine hydrochloric bicarbonate buffer having undergone pyrocatechol deprotonation). The tools in vogue, especially field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), have made it possible to fully characterize the structure of the new organic-inorganic nanofiltration (NF) membrane, namely NF_PAN_Ti. A soft computing model has been applied to make commonplace the complex and implicit extended Nernst–Planck equations that govern the transport of ions through NF membranes. Euler’s numerical method was applied with a small step-size and the results obtained were very interesting. The filtration velocity approach of GUEROUT-ELFORD-FERRY helped to estimate the average pore size of NF_PAN_Ti to rp = 0.538 nm. A six-day test carried out on NF_PAN_Ti demonstrated its long-term stability and showed a steady-rejection rate of 89.3% of MgCl2 salt and permeate flux of 56 L·m−2·h−1. The Euler’ numerical method corroborated perfectly the experimental findings since the relative error was found to be very low at 0.33% for Cl− and 0.09% for Mg2+ (RE << 0.1). These practical prediction tools may henceforth help in the choice and calibration of next-generation NF membranes’ synthesis.
