Piezoelectric PVDF and its copolymers in biomedicine: innovations and applications

In recent years, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has emerged as a versatile polymer with a wide range of applications across various fields. PVDF's piezosensitivity, versatility, crystalline structure, and tunable parameters have established it as a highly sought-after material. Furthermore, PVDF and its copolymers exhibit excellent processability and chemical resistance to a diverse array of substances. Of particular significance is its remarkable structural stability in physiological media, which highlights its potential for use in the development of biomedical products. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in PVDF-based biomedical systems. It examines the fabrication of stimulus-responsive delivery systems, bioelectric therapy devices, and tissue-regenerating scaffolds, all of which harness the piezosensitivity of PVDF. Moreover, the potential of PVDF in the fabrication of both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tools is investigated, with particular emphasis on its flexibility, transparency, and piezoelectric efficiency. The material's high biocompatibility and physiological stability are of paramount importance in the development of implantable sensors for long-term health monitoring, which is crucial for the management of chronic diseases and postoperative care. Additionally, we discuss a novel approach to photoacoustic microscopy that employs a PVDF sensor, thereby eliminating the necessity for external contrast agents. This technique provides a new avenue for non-invasive imaging in biomedical applications. Finally, we explore the challenges and prospects for the development of PVDF-based systems for a range of biomedical applications. This review is distinctive in comparison to other reviews on PVDF due to its concentrated examination of biomedical applications, including pioneering imaging techniques, long-term health monitoring, and a detailed account of advancements in the field. Collectively, these elements illustrate the potential of PVDF to markedly influence biomedical engineering and patient care, distinguishing it from existing literature. By leveraging the distinctive attributes of PVDF and its copolymers, researchers can continue to advance the frontiers of biomedical engineering, with the potential to transform patient care and treatment outcomes.

Liquid- liquid (Cyclohexanone: Cyclohexanol) separation using augmented tight nanofiltration membrane: A sustainable approach

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) is an incipient technology in the field of organic liquid-liquid separation. The incomplete separations and complexity involved in these, forces many organic liquids to be released as effluents and the adverse effects of these on environment is enormous and irreparable. The work prominences on the complete separation of industrially significant cyclohexanone: cyclohexanol (keto-alcohol oil) and heptane: toluene mixtures. The separations of these above-mentioned organic liquid mixtures were carried out using the fabricated Lewis acid modified graphitic carbon nitride (Cu2O@g-C3N4) incorporated polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) composite membranes. These fabricated membranes showed a separation factor of 18.16 and flux of 1.62 Lm-2h-1 for cyclohexanone: cyclohexanol mixture and separation of heptane and toluene mixture (with heptane flux of 1.52 Lm-2h-1) showed a separation factor of 9.9. The selectivity and productivity are based on the polarity and size of the organic liquids. The role of Cu2O@g-C3N4 is influencing the pore size distribution, increased divergence from solubility parameters, polarity, solvent uptake and porosity of the composite membranes. The developed composite membranes are thus envisioned to be apt for a wide range of liquid-liquid separations due to its implicit nature.

Preparation and Characterization of PVDF-TiO2 Mixed-Matrix Membrane with PVP and PEG as Pore-Forming Agents for BSA Rejection

Polymeric membranes offer straightforward modification methods that make industry scaling affordable and easy; however, these materials are hydrophobic, prone to fouling, and vulnerable to extreme operating conditions. Various attempts were made in this study to fix the challenges in using polymeric membranes and create mixed-matrix membrane (MMMs) with improved properties and hydrophilicity by adding titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and pore-forming agents to hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The PVDF mixed-matrix ultrafiltration membranes in this study were made using the non-solvent phase inversion approach which is a simple and effective method for increasing the hydrophilic nature of membranes. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as pore-forming chemicals were created. Pure water flux, BSA flux, and BSA rejection were calculated to evaluate the mixed-matrix membrane's efficiency. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution was employed in this study to examine the protein rejection ability. Increases in hydrophilicity, viscosity, and flux in pure water and BSA solution were achieved using PVP and PEG additives. The PVDF membrane's hydrophilicity was raised with the addition of TiO₂, showing an increased contact angle to 71°. The results show that the PVDF-PVP-TiO₂ membrane achieved its optimum water flux of 97 L/(m²h) while the PVDF-PEG-TiO₂ membrane rejected BSA at a rate greater than 97%. The findings demonstrate that use of a support or additive improved filtration performance compared to a pristine polymeric membrane by increasing its hydrophilicity.

Electrically conductive TiO2/CB/PVDF membranes for synchronous cross-flow filtration and solar photoelectrocatalysis

Combining photocatalysis (PC) and membrane filtration (MF) has emerged as an attractive technology for water purification, however, the water purification efficiency and membrane fouling are still challenging. Herein, we report a novel photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) membrane mediated by a ternary polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-carbon black (CB)-TiO₂ composite conductive membrane synthesized by a phase inversion method assisted by the mixed surfactants of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The resultant electrically conductive TiO₂/CB/PVDF membrane features a homogeneous surface with obvious pore size of 20-150 nm, a thickness ∼116 μm, and an average resistivity as low as ∼3.165 Ω∙m. The cooperation of PVP and SDS surfactants dramatically improves the organic-inorganic interactions and thus eventually enhances the porosity, stability of porous structure, mechanical stability, and conductivity and electrochemical properties of the hybrid membrane. Upon the solvent evaperation of the wellblended casting solution and the phase inversion, TiO₂/CB preferentially exist on the surface of PVDF membrane, enabling the efficient PEC degradation of organic pollutants. The synergistic coupling of TiO₂ and CB in PVDF membrane results in efficient PEC properties with bi-functional membrane antifouling and enhanced water purification in azo dyes decolorization under the stationary mode and in our lab-made continuous cross-flow PEC system, superior to those by photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. The developed synchronous MF and PEC system mediated by the conductive TiO₂/CB/PVDF membrane proves to a feasible route to improving the self-cleaning properties of the polymer membrane while simultaneously increasing the water decontaminating efficiency.

Influence of Dispersed TiO2 Nanoparticles via Steric Interaction on the Antifouling Performance of PVDF/TiO2 Composite Membranes

Herein, the influence of various contents of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on the dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles and the comprehensive properties of PVDF/TiO2 composite membranes via the steric hindrance interaction was systematically explored. Hydrophilic PEG was employed as a dispersing surfactant of TiO2 nanoparticles in the pre-dispersion process and as a pore-forming additive in the following membrane preparation process. The slight overlap shown in the TEM image and low TSI value (<1) of the composite casting solution indicated the effective dispersion and stabilization under the steric interaction with a PEG content of 6 wt.%. Properties such as the surface pore size, the development of finger-like structures, permeability, hydrophilicity and Zeta potential were obviously enhanced. The improved antifouling performance between the membrane surface and foulants was corroborated by less negative free energy of adhesion (about −42.87 mJ/m2), a higher interaction energy barrier (0.65 KT) and low flux declination during the filtration process. The high critical flux and low fouling rate both in winter and summer as well as the long-term running operation in A/O-MBR firmly supported the elevated antifouling performance, which implies a promising application in the municipal sewage treatment field.

Performance of PVDF-TiO2 Membranes during Photo-Filtration in the Presence of Inorganic and Organic Components

In this study, the anti-fouling performance of PVDF-TiO₂ composite membranes, indicated by their permeate flux, was studied with different types of synthetic feed solutions. Photo-filtration (filtration under continuous UV irradiation) of solutions containing inorganic and organic components, which are ubiquitous in drinking/natural water, was performed to evaluate their influence on the photo-induced properties and performance of the membranes. The results indicated that inorganic fouling was unlikely to occur on PVDF-TiO₂ membranes, and the presence of common inorganic ions in drinking water did not hinder their performance. However, in the particular case where a small amount of Cu²⁺ coexisted alongside HCO₃⁻ in the feed solution, inorganic fouling occurred, causing severe flux decline and prohibiting the photo-induced properties of the membranes. On the other hand, when used to filter organic fouling solutions, the membranes showed strong resistance to sodium alginate fouling, and less so for humic acids. In terms of separation efficiency, the membranes showed no advantages when operated in photo-filtration mode, as the rejection rate of both foulants under photo-filtration was not higher than that under normal filtration. In the case of humic acids, the photodegradation of humic substances into smaller compounds that were able to enter the permeate stream led to a lower rejection rate. Nevertheless, photo-filtration of these organic foulants still offered a higher permeate flux than normal filtration, up to a certain concentration level (5 mg/L for humic acids and 50 mg/L for sodium alginate).
