Fabrication of a Cation-Exchange Membrane via the Blending of SPES/N-Phthaloyl Chitosan/MIL-101(Fe) Using Response Surface Methodology for Desalination

Preparation of chitosan resin by two-step crosslinking method and its adsorption for palladium in wastewater

To preserve the activity of amine groups on chitosan, chitosan resin (CR) was synthesized using the reversed-phase suspension two-step crosslinking method for the adsorption of palladium from wastewater. The effects of varying the amounts of chitosan, liquid paraffin, ethyl acetate, formaldehyde solution, and epichlorohydrin on the adsorption capacity of CR were investigated using both single-factor experiments and response surface methodology. The preparation conditions for the chitosan resin were optimized, and its adsorption properties were systematically evaluated. The results indicated that CR exhibited a high saturated adsorption capacity for palladium, reaching 195.22 mg·g-1. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model, while the adsorption isotherms were well described by the Sips model. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, CR maintained exceptional stability, with a palladium removal efficiency exceeding 99.8 % even after eight adsorption-desorption cycles. The primary adsorption mechanism is attributed to the interaction between palladium ions and the protonated amino groups of the chitosan resin.

Bead-Containing Superhydrophobic Nanofiber Membrane for Membrane Distillation

This study introduces an innovative approach to enhancing membrane distillation (MD) performance by developing bead-containing superhydrophobic sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) nanofibers with S-MWCNTs. By leveraging SPES's inherent hydrophobicity and thermal stability, combined with a nanostructured fibrous configuration, we engineered beads designed to optimize the MD process for water purification applications. Here, oxidized hydrophobic S-MWCNTs were dispersed in a SPES solution at concentrations of 0.5% and 1.0% by weight. These bead membranes are fabricated using a novel electrospinning technique, followed by a post-treatment with the hydrophobic polyfluorinated grafting agent to augment nanofiber membrane surface properties, thereby achieving superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 145 ± 2° and a higher surface roughness of 512 nm. The enhanced membrane demonstrated a water flux of 87.3 Lm-2 h-1 and achieved nearly 99% salt rejection efficiency at room temperature, using a 3 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution as the feed. The results highlight the potential of superhydrophobic SPES nanofiber beads in revolutionizing MD technology, offering a scalable, efficient, and robust membrane for salt rejection.

Perspective into ion storage of pristine metal-organic frameworks in capacitive deionization

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring tunable conductivity, tailored pore/structure and high surface area, have emerged as promising electrode nanomaterials for ion storage in capacitive deionization (CDI) and garnered tremendous attention in recent years. Despite the many advantages, the perspective from which MOFs should be designed and prepared for use as CDI electrode materials still faces various challenges that hinder their practical application. This summary proposes design principles for the pore size, pore environment, structure and dimensions of MOFs to precisely tailor the surface area, selectivity, conductivity, and Faradaic activity of electrode materials based on the ion storage mechanism in the CDI process. The account provides a new perspective to deepen the understanding of the fundamental issues of MOFs electrode materials to further meet the practical applications of CDI.

Sodium-alginate-laden MXene and MOF systems and their composite hydrogel beads for batch and fixed-bed adsorption of naproxen with electrochemical regeneration

Sodium alginate (SA)-laden two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene (MX) and MIL-101(Fe) (a type of metal-organic framework (MOF)) composites were prepared and used for the removal of naproxen (NPX), following the adsorption and electrochemical regeneration processes. The fixed-bed adsorption column studies were also conducted to study the process of removal of NPX by hydrogels. The number of interactions via which the MX-embedded SA (MX@SA) could adsorb NPX was higher than the number of pathways associated with NPX adsorption on the MIL-101(Fe)-embedded SA (MIL-101(Fe)@SA), and the MX and MIL-101(Fe) composite embedded SA (MX/MIL-101(Fe)@SA). The optimum parameters for the electrochemical regeneration process were determined: charge passed and current density values were 169.3 C g-1 and 10 mA cm-2, respectively, for MX@SA, and the charge passed and current density values were 16.7 C g-1 and 5 mA cm-2, respectively, for both MIL-101(Fe)@SA and MX/MIL-101(Fe)@SA. These parameters enabled excellent regeneration, consistent over multiple adsorption and electrochemical regeneration cycles. The mechanism for the regeneration of the materials was proposed that the regeneration of MX@SA and MIL-101(Fe)@SA involved the indirect electrooxidation process in the presence of OH radicals, and the regeneration of MX/MIL-101(Fe)@SA involved the indirect oxidation process in the presence of active chlorine species.

Kenics Static Mixer Combined with Gas Sparging for the Improvement of Cross-Flow Microfiltration: Modeling and Optimization

The use of membrane filtration as a downstream process for microbial biomass harvesting is hampered due to the low permeate flux values achieved during the microfiltration of fermentation broths. Several hydrodynamic methods for increasing permeate flux by creating turbulent flow patterns inside the membrane module are used to overcome this problem. The main goal of this study was to investigate the combined use of a Kenics static mixer and gas sparging during cross-flow microfiltration of Bacillus velezensis IP22 cultivation broth. Optimization of the microfiltration process was performed by using the response surface methodology. It was found that the combined use of a static mixer and gas sparging leads to a considerable increase in the permeate flux, up to the optimum steady-state permeate flux value of 183.42 L·m−2·h−1 and specific energy consumption of 0.844 kW·h·m−3. The optimum steady-state permeate flux is almost four times higher, whilst, at the same time, the specific energy consumption is almost three times lower compared to the optimum results achieved using gas sparging alone. The combination of Kenics static mixer and gas sparging during cross-flow microfiltration is a promising technique for the enhancement of steady-state permeate flux with simultaneously decreasing specific energy consumption.
