Abstract
It is still difficult for a single antibacterial modality to realize satisfactory management of bacterial breeding in food preservation. To solve this problem, we developed a photothermal-derived dual-mode synergistic bactericidal konjac glucomannan (KGM)/polycaprolactone (PCL) bilayer film incorporated with quercetin-loaded melanin-like nanoparticles (Q@MNPs). The results showed that the mechanical properties (TS: 29.8 MPa, EAB: 43.1 %), UV shielding properties, and water resistance (WCA: 124.1°, WVP: 3.92 g mm/m2 day kPa) of KGM-Q@MNPs/PCL bilayer films were significantly improved. More importantly, KGM-Q@MNPs/PCL bilayer film presented outstanding photothermal inversion and controlled release behavior of Q triggered by near infrared (NIR) radiation, thus contributing to excellent dual-mode synergistic antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus. Meanwhile, the KGM-Q@MNPs/PCL bilayer film possessed good biocompatibility and low toxicity. As a proof-of-concept application, we further verified the significant value of film for the preservation of cherry tomatoes. Since KGM-Q@MNPs/PCL bilayer film showed excellent biodegradability, this work will aid the development of sustainable antibacterial food packaging materials.

Abstract
This study focuses on developing a biodegradable film using a novel hybrid citrus peel pectin. A bilayer approach with PLA was proposed and optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to complement pectin films' mechanical and barrier property limitations. The optimized film composition (2.90 g PLA and 1.96 g pectin) showed enhanced mechanical strength with a tensile strength (TS) of 7.04 MPa and an elongation at break (EAB) of 462.63%. In addition, it demonstrated lower water vapor (1.45 × 10-10 g/msPa), oxygen (2.79 × 10-7 g/ms) permeability, and solubility (23.53%). Compared to single-layer pectin films, the optimized bilayer film had a 25% increased thickness, significantly improved water barrier (3806 times lower) and oxygen barrier (3.68 times lower) properties, and 22.38 times higher stretchability, attributed to hydrogen bond formation, as confirmed by FTIR analysis. The bilayer film, effectively protected against UV and visible light, could be a barrier against light-induced lipid oxidation. Moreover, it demonstrated superior seal efficiency, ensuring secure sealing in practical applications. The bilayer pouch containing mustard dressing exhibited stable sealing with no leakage after immersion in hot water and ethanol, making it suitable for secure food pouch packaging.

Abstract
In order to improve the effectiveness of the active packaging, we aimed to develop an active packaging film with unidirectional sustained release, high barrier protection, and seamless attachment between the layers. An active film based on glutenin/tamarind gum loaded with the binary microemulsion of melatonin/pummelo essential oil (G/T-M-E) with sustained release and combination effects of internal and external layers was prepared. The outer barrier layer exerted an excellent protective barrier effect after adding (3-chloropropyl) triethoxysilane, which effectively reduced external interference and the ineffective diffusion of active substances in the inner layer. The effective attachment of melatonin and essential oil layer in the G/T-M-E film enhanced antioxidation, microorganism inhibition, and free-radical-scavenging properties, which effectively delayed the senescence of post-harvest white mushrooms. Furthermore, the G/T-M-E exhibited excellent tensile strength, barrier capacity, and load-bearing strength, which had a potential, positive effect on food preservation. Therefore, this film is highly recommended for packaging purposes.

Abstract
The present study reports on the development by thermoforming of highly sustainable trays based on a bilayer structure composed of paper substrate and a film made of a blend of partially bio-based poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA). The incorporation of the renewable succinic acid derived biopolyester blend film slightly improved the thermal resistance and tensile strength of paper, whereas its flexural ductility and puncture resistance were notably enhanced. Furthermore, in terms of barrier properties, the incorporation of this biopolymer blend film reduced the water and aroma vapor permeances of paper by two orders of magnitude, while it endowed the paper structure with intermediate oxygen barrier properties. The resultant thermoformed bilayer trays were, thereafter, originally applied to preserve non-thermally treated Italian artisanal fresh pasta, "fusilli calabresi" type, which was stored under refrigeration conditions for 3 weeks. Shelf-life evaluation showed that the application of the PBS-PBSA film on the paper substrate delayed color changes and mold growth for 1 week, as well as reduced drying of fresh pasta, resulting in acceptable physicochemical quality parameters within 9 days of storage. Lastly, overall migration studies performed with two food simulants demonstrated that the newly developed paper/PBS-PBSA trays are safe since these successfully comply with current legislation on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

Abstract
In this paper, we evaluated the potential of two synthesized bio-based polyurethane foams, PU1 and PU2, for the removal of diesel and gasoline from water mixtures. We started the investigation with the experiment in batch. The total sorption capacity S (g/g) for the diesel/water system was slightly higher with respect to gasoline/water, with a value of 62 g/g for PU1 and 65 g/g for PU2. We found that the sorption follows a pseudo second-order kinetic model for both the materials. The experimental data showed that the best isotherm models were obtained with Langmuir and Redlich–Peterson models. In addition, to provide an idea of the process scalability for future industrial applications, we tested the sorption capacity of the foams using a continuous-flow of the same oil/water mixtures and we obtained performances even better with respect to the batch test. The regeneration can be performed up to 50 times by centrifuge, without losing efficacy.

Abstract
The present work evaluates the food packaging performance of previously developed films of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) reinforced with atomized microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) compatibilized by a reactive melt-mixing process. To this end, the novel green composite films were originally applied herein as lids in aluminum trays to preserve two dissimilar types of fatty foods, namely minced pork meat and sunflower oil. Results indicated that the PHBV/MFC films effectively preserved the physicochemical and microbiological quality of pork meat for one week of storage at 5 °C. In particular, the compatibilized green composite lid film yielded the lowest weight loss and highest oxidative stability, showing values of 0.935% and 0.78 malonaldehyde (MDA)/kg. Moreover, none of the packaged meat samples exceeded the acceptable Total Aerobial Count (TAC) level of 5 logs colony-forming units (CFU)/g due to the improved barrier properties of the lids. Furthermore, the green composite films successfully prevented sunflower oil oxidation in accelerated oxidative storage conditions for 21 days. Similarly, the compatibilized PHBV/MFC lid film led to the lowest peroxide value (PV) and conjugated diene and triene contents, with respective values of 19.5 meq O2/kg and 2.50 and 1.44 g/100 mL. Finally, the migration of the newly developed PHBV-based films was assessed using two food simulants, proving to be safe since their overall migration levels were in the 1-3 mg/dm2 range and, thus, below the maximum level established by legislation.
