Mixed Matrix Membranes for Carbon Capture and Sequestration: Challenges and Scope

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a major greenhouse gas responsible for the increase in global temperature, making carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) crucial for controlling global warming. Traditional CCS methods such as absorption, adsorption, and cryogenic distillation are energy-intensive and expensive. In recent years, researchers have focused on CCS using membranes, specifically solution-diffusion, glassy, and polymeric membranes, due to their favorable properties for CCS applications. However, existing polymeric membranes have limitations in terms of permeability and selectivity trade-off, despite efforts to modify their structure. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) offer advantages in terms of energy usage, cost, and operation for CCS, as they can overcome the limitations of polymeric membranes by incorporating inorganic fillers, such as graphene oxide, zeolite, silica, carbon nanotubes, and metal-organic frameworks. MMMs have shown superior gas separation performance compared to polymeric membranes. However, challenges with MMMs include interfacial defects between the polymeric and inorganic phases, as well as agglomeration with increasing filler content, which can decrease selectivity. Additionally, there is a need for renewable and naturally occurring polymeric materials for the industrial-scale production of MMMs for CCS applications, which poses fabrication and reproducibility challenges. Therefore, this research focuses on different methodologies for carbon capture and sequestration techniques, discusses their merits and demerits, and elaborates on the most efficient method. Factors to consider in developing MMMs for gas separation, such as matrix and filler properties, and their synergistic effect are also explained in this Review.

Merging Proline:Xylitol Eutectic Solvent in Crosslinked Chitosan Pervaporation Membranes for Enhanced Water Permeation in Dehydrating Ethanol

The scope of this research aims at merging a new deep eutectic mixture (DES) into a biopolymer-based membrane for a pervaporation application in dehydrating ethanol. Herein, an L-proline:xylitol (at 5:1) eutectic mixture was successfully synthesized and blended with chitosan (CS). A complete characterization of the hybrid membranes, in terms of morphology, solvent uptake, and hydrophilicity, has been conducted. As part of their applicability, the blended membranes were assayed for their ability to separate water from ethanolic solutions by means of pervaporation. At the highest temperature (50 °C), a water permeation of ca. 0.46 kg m^-2 h^-1 was acquired, representing a higher permeation than the pristine CS membranes (ca. 0.37 kg m^-2 h^-1). Therefore, CS membranes demonstrated an enhanced water permeation thanks to their blending with the hydrophilic L-proline:xylitol agent, making these membranes a good candidate for other separations containing polar solvents.

Recent Advancements in the Recovery and Reuse of Organic Solvents Using Novel Nanomaterial-Based Membranes for Renewable Energy Applications

The energy crisis in the world is increasing rapidly owing to the shortage of fossil fuel reserves. Climate change and an increase in global warming necessitates a change in focus from petroleum-based fuels to renewable fuels such as biofuels. The remodeling of existing separation processes using various nanomaterials is of a growing interest to industrial separation methods. Recently, the design of membrane technologies has been the most focused research area concerning fermentation broth to enhance performance efficiency, while recovering those byproducts to be used as value added fuels. Specifically, the use of novel nano material membranes, which brings about a selective permeation of the byproducts, such as organic solvent, from the fermentation broth, positively affects the fermentation kinetics by eliminating the issue of product inhibition. In this review, which and how membrane-based technologies using novel materials can improve the separation performance of organic solvents is considered. In particular, technical approaches suggested in previous studies are discussed with the goal of emphasizing benefits and problems faced in order to direct research towards an optimized membrane separation performance for renewable fuel production on a commercial scale.

Sorption of Polar Sorbents into GO Powders and Membranes

The comparative study of sorption of polar substances acetonitrile and water into powders and membranes (>10 μm thick) of modified Hummers (HGO) and Brodie (BGO) graphite oxides was performed using isopiestic method (IM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Additional sorption data were obtained for pyridine and 1-octanol. Sorption measurements were accompanied by conventional XRD and XPS control. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was additionally used to characterize ordering of the membranes. The impact on sorption of synthetic procedure (Brodie or Hummers), method of making membranes, chemical nature of the sorbent, and method of sorption was systematically examined. It was demonstrated that variations in synthetic procedures within both Hummers and Brodie methods did not lead to changes in the sorption properties of the corresponding powders. Sorption of acetonitrile and pyridine was reduced by approximately half when switching from powders to membranes at ambient temperature. DSC measurements at a lower temperature gave equal sorption of acetonitrile into HGO powder and membranes. Water has demonstrated unique sorption properties. Equal sorption of water was measured for HGO membranes and powders at T = 298 K and at T = 273 K. It was demonstrated that lowering the orientational alignment of the membranes led to the increase of sorption. In practice this could allow one to tune sorption/swelling and transport properties of the GO membranes directly by adjusting their internal ordering without the use of any composite materials.
