Recent advances in CO2 capture and mineralization using layered double hydroxide-based materials: A review

The continuous release of substantial amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere has resulted in numerous severe adverse effects. Several materials have been synthesized and utilized for CO2 capture. One class of such materials is layered double hydroxides (LDHs), which have emerged as promising materials for CO2 capture due to their tunable properties, high surface area, and excellent CO2 adsorption capabilities. Although there are some review articles on CO2 capture and conversion using various materials, there is still a notable lack of thorough reviews focusing on the utilization of LDH-based materials for CO2 capture. Additionally, the field of CO2 capture and mineralization using LDH-based materials is rapidly evolving, necessitating up-to-date comprehensive reviews to analyze, evaluate, and condense the dispersed information found in recently published research articles. Accordingly, this review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in CO2 capture using LDH-based materials. After briefly introducing the topic, different synthesis protocols of LDH-based materials are briefly reviewed. Then, CO2 capture using LDHs, calcined LDHs, impregnated LDHs, composites containing LDHs, amine functionalized LDHs, and during steam methane reforming, are thoroughly analyzed and discussed. Additionally, the effects of synthesis method and post treatment of LDH-based materials on CO2 capture, effect of modification and functionalization on LDHs, and the effects of various process conditions including temperature, pressure, water vapor, and gas composition on the performance of CO2 capture by LDH-based materials are reviewed. Limitations, challenges, obstacles, and remaining knowledge gaps are highlighted, and future research works to address them are proposed.

Nano-enabled gas separation membranes: Advancing sustainability in the energy-environment Nexus

Gas separation membranes serve as crucial to numerous industrial processes, including gas purification, energy production, and environmental protection. Recent advancements in nanomaterials have drastically revolutionized the process of developing tailored gas separation membranes, providing unreachable levels of control over the performance and characteristics of the membrane. The incorporation of cutting-edge nanomaterials into the composition of traditional polymer-based membranes has provided novel opportunities. This review critically analyses recent advancements, exploring the diverse types of nanomaterials employed, their synthesis techniques, and their integration into membrane matrices. The impact of nanomaterial incorporation on separation efficiency, selectivity, and structural integrity is evaluated across various gas separation scenarios. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms behind nanomaterial-enhanced gas transport are examined, shedding light on the intricate interactions between nanoscale components and gas molecules. The review also discusses potential drawbacks and considerations associated with nanomaterial utilization in membrane development, including scalability and long-term stability. This review article highlights nanomaterials' significant impact in revolutionizing the field of selective gas separation membranes, offering the potential for innovation and future directions in this ever-evolving sector.

Progress in advanced electrospun membranes for CO2 capture: Feedstock, design, and trend

The emission of large amounts of carbon dioxide has caused serious environmental problems and hindered the construction of a green and low-carbon society. Efficient carbon dioxide capture has become an important means to slow down global climate warming and achieve effective utilization of carbon dioxide. Membranes synthesized by electrospinning technology are becoming promising carbon capture materials due to their unique characteristics. This review describes the features of membranes prepared from available raw materials and presents their application performances in carbon capture. The preparation methods of various types of membrane materials with excellent capture performance are summarized, and the effects of electrospinning parameters on electrospun fibers are systematically analyzed. Furthermore, recommendations and expectations for further development of electrospun membranes for carbon capture applications are given. These works provide important references for an in-depth understanding of the development status of electrospun membranes in the field of carbon capture and for expanding future research.

The Effect of Complex Modifier Consisting of Star Macromolecules and Ionic Liquid on Structure and Gas Separation of Polyamide Membrane

A novel hybrid membrane was developed on the basis of poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PA) by introducing an original complex modifier into the polymer; this modifier consisted of equal amounts of heteroarm star macromolecules with a fullerene C₆₀ core (HSM) and the ionic liquid [BMIM][Tf₂N] (IL). The effect of the (HSM:IL) complex modifier on characteristics of the PA membrane was evaluated using physical, mechanical, thermal, and gas separation techniques. The structure of the PA/(HSM:IL) membrane was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Gas transport properties were determined by measuring He, O₂, N₂, and CO₂ permeation through the membranes based on PA and its composites containing a 5 wt% modifier. The permeability coefficients of all gases through the hybrid membranes were lower than the corresponding parameters for the unmodified membrane, whereas the ideal selectivity in the separation of He/N₂, CO₂/N_2, and O₂/N₂ gas pairs was higher for the hybrid membrane. The position of the PA/(HSM:IL) membrane on the Robeson's diagram for the O₂/N₂ gas pair is discussed.
