Nanomaterials: Solutions to Water-Concomitant Challenges

Water-Based Route for Dopamine and Reduced Graphene Oxide Aerogel Production

Water pollution caused by domestic waste oil and accidents with oil/organic spill needs immediate remediation, as such a pollution causes serious threats to health and the environment. Development of absorbent materials for the treatment of oil-polluted waters in a green and energy-efficient manner is highly desired. In this study, a green and simple strategy is proposed to prepare aerogels by hydrothermal reaction of graphene oxide (GO) dispersions using dopamine (DOPA) as the cross-linker. Concentrations of GO and DOPA were changed to determine their effects on absorption capacities. Aerogels produced had low densities ranging from 2.90 to 4.34 mg/cm3. Various organics, diesel oil, and sunflower oil were used to evaluate the absorption capacity of aerogels. It was observed that even with a mild thermal reduction at 150 °C, aerogels exhibited very high absorption capacities of up to 445 mg/mg. The produced aerogels showed high reusability (80%) and structural stability even after 10 absorption/desorption cycles. They possess great potential in oil/organic removal and water treatment based on their high absorption capacities and performances in separating organics/liquids from water.

Superior adsorption performance of citrate modified graphene oxide as nano material for removal organic and inorganic pollutants from aqueous solution

This work addressed one step preparation method to form a novel nano material composite of graphene oxide nanosheet (GO) functionalized with low-cost tri-sodium citrate (C), using, teteraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a cross-linker. The prepared composite (GO–C) was characterized using various advanced techniques. Among these techniques, the TGA provided interesting information concerning the functionalization process. Within this process, the (–OH) groups that located at the GO-surface were consumed in the modification process which leads to increase the thermal stability of the resulted composite. Cationic organic methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV), and inorganic copper (Cu²⁺) and cobalt (Co²⁺) pollutants were displayed as a model to assess their removal performance by the developed composite (GO–C) from aqueous solution, through batch technique. According to Langmuir isotherm the GO–C present an excellent adsorption capacity for MB (222.22 mg g⁻¹), CV (270.27 mg g⁻¹), Cu²⁺ (163.4 mg g⁻¹) and Co²⁺ (145.35 mg g⁻¹) which were more than the adsorption capacities found in literature. Additionally, the regenerated composite presents higher removal ability than the original composite.

Review of the Recent Advances in Electrospun Nanofibers Applications in Water Purification

Recently, nanofibers have come to be considered one of the sustainable routes with enormous applicability in different fields, such as wastewater treatment. Electrospun nanofibers can be fabricated from various materials, such as synthetic and natural polymers, and contribute to the synthesis of novel nanomaterials and nanocomposites. Therefore, they have promising properties, such as an interconnected porous structure, light weight, high porosity, and large surface area, and are easily modified with other polymeric materials or nanomaterials to enhance their suitability for specific applications. As such, this review surveys recent progress made in the use of electrospun nanofibers to purify polluted water, wherein the distinctive characteristics of this type of nanofiber are essential when using them to remove organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater, as well as for oil/water (O/W) separation.

Unfunctionalized and Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes/Polyamide Nanocomposites as Selective-Layer Polysulfone Membranes

Nowadays, reverse osmosis is the most widely utilized strategy in membrane technology due to its continuous improvement. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of the surface characteristics of support layers in thin-film membranes to improve their reverse osmosis performance. In this study, interfacial polymerization was used to generate the membranes by employing polyamide as a selective layer on top of the polysulfone supporting sheet. Different membranes, varying in terms of the concentrations of unfunctionalized and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), as well as ethanol, have been fabricated. The efficiency of the membrane has been increased by increasing its permeability towards water with high salt rejection. Different characterization techniques were applied to examine all of the fabricated membranes. PA-EtOH 30% (v/v), as a selective layer on polysulfone sheets to enhance the membrane’s salt rejection, was shown to be the most efficient of the suggested membranes, improving the membrane’s salt rejection. The water permeability of the polyamide membrane with EtOH 30% (v/v) was 56.18 L/m² h bar, which was more than twice the average permeability of the polyamide membrane (23.63 L/m² h bar). The salt rejection was also improved (from 97.73% for NaCl to 99.29% and from 97.39% for MgSO₄ to 99.62% in the same condition). The PA-MWCNTs 0.15% membrane, on the other hand, had a reduced surface roughness, higher hydrophobicity, and higher water contact angle readings, according to SEM. These characteristics led to the lowest salt rejection, resulting from the hydrophobic nature of MWCNTs.

Removal of Phenolic Compounds from Olive Mill Wastewater by a Polydimethylsiloxane/oxMWCNTs Porous Nanocomposite

User-friendly and energy-efficient methods able to work in noncontinuous mode for in situ purification of olive mill wastewater (OMW) are necessary. Herein we determined the potential of oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes entrapped in a microporous polymeric matrix of polydimethylsiloxane in the removal and recovery of phenolic compounds (PCs) from OMW. The fabrication of the nanocomposite materials was straightforward and evidenced good adsorption capacity. The adsorption process is influenced by the pH of the OMW. Thermodynamic parameters evidenced the good affinity of the entrapped nanomaterial towards phenols. Furthermore, the kinetics and adsorption isotherms are studied in detail. The presence of oil inside the OMW can speed up the uptake process in batch adsorption experiments with respect to standard aqueous solutions, suggesting a possible use of the nanocomposite for fast processing of OMW directly in the tank where they are stored. Moreover, the prepared nanocomposite is safe and can be easily handled and disposed of, thus avoiding the presence of specialized personnel. After the adsorption process the surface of the nanomaterial can be easily regenerated by mild treatments with diluted acetic acid, thus permitting both the recyclability of the nanomaterial and the recovery of phenolic compounds for a possible use as additives in food and nutraceutical industries and the recovery of OMW for fertirrigation.

Oxygen Reduction Reaction in the Field of Water Environment for Application of Nanomaterials

Water pollution has caused the ecosystem to be in a state of imbalance for a long time. It has become a major global ecological and environmental problem today. Solving the potential hidden dangers of pollutants and avoiding unauthorized access to resources has become the necessary condition and important task to ensure the sustainable development of human society. To solve such problems, this review summarizes the research progress of nanomaterials in the field of water aimed at the treatment of water pollution and the development and utilization of new energy. The paper also tries to seek scientific solutions to environmental degradation and to create better living environmental conditions from previously published cutting edge research. The main content in this review article includes four parts: advanced oxidation, catalytic adsorption, hydrogen, and oxygen production. Among a host of other things, this paper also summarizes the various ways by which composite nanomaterials have been combined for enhancing catalytic efficiency, reducing energy consumption, recycling, and ability to expand their scope of application. Hence, this paper provides a clear roadmap on the status, success, problems, and the way forward for future studies.

Self-Assembled Graphene Composites for Flow-Through Filtration

Spontaneously exfoliated pristine graphene is used as a surfactant to template the formation of electrically conductive filters for the adsorption of an organic dye from water. In contrast to other reported graphene-based adsorption materials, our system provides a continuous approach to water treatment rather than a batch approach, and uses pristine graphene instead of the more costly and environmentally challenging graphene oxide. The use of self-assembled graphene also results in our filters being electrically conductive, providing a convenient route to clean the filters by resistive heating. An investigation of the mechanism of formation and filtration by these filters, templated by self-assembled two-dimensional pristine graphene, is presented. The thermodynamically driven exfoliation of natural flake graphite at a high-energy monomer/water interface produces water-in-oil emulsions stabilized by a thin layer of overlapping graphene sheets. Subsequent polymerization of the continuous monomer phase produces polymer foams with cells lined by graphene. With a combination of acoustic spectroscopy and electron microscopy, the effects of graphite concentration and temperature are studied, as is the correlation between droplet size and the size of the cells in the final polymer foam.
