Influence of Blend Composition and Silica Nanoparticles on the Morphology and Gas Separation Performance of PU/PVA Blend Membranes

The State-Of-The-Art Functionalized Nanomaterials for Carbon Dioxide Separation Membrane

Nanocomposite membrane (NCM) is deemed as a practical and green separation solution which has found application in various fields, due to its potential to delivery excellent separation performance economically. NCM is enabled by nanofiller, which comes in a wide range of geometries and chemical features. Despite numerous advantages offered by nanofiller incorporation, fabrication of NCM often met processing issues arising from incompatibility between inorganic nanofiller and polymeric membrane. Contemporary, functionalization of nanofiller which modify the surface properties of inorganic material using chemical agents is a viable approach and vigorously pursued to refine NCM processing and improve the odds of obtaining a defect-free high-performance membrane. This review highlights the recent progress on nanofiller functionalization employed in the fabrication of gas-separative NCMs. Apart from the different approaches used to obtain functionalized nanofiller (FN) with good dispersion in solvent and polymer matrix, this review discusses the implication of functionalization in altering the structure and chemical properties of nanofiller which favor interaction with specific gas species. These changes eventually led to the enhancement in the gas separation efficiency of NCMs. The most frequently used chemical agents are identified for each type of gas. Finally, the future perspective of gas-separative NCMs are highlighted.

Transforming 3D CAU-10-H into 2D Materials with High Base Stability for Membrane Separation

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have received a significant research attention owing to their unique chemical and physical properties. These materials not only provide the chemically active sites and exposed surface atoms, but also display the porous nature suitable for their use as membranes for gas separation. In this study, 3D CAU-10-H has been transformed into a novel alkali stabilized 2D CACl-10 (180). Though CACl-10 (180) is similar to AlOOH, it is a novel 2D nanomaterial synthesized by using 4-chloroisophthalic acid and aluminum nitrate nonahydrate, with thermal decomposition at 300 °C. Further, CACl-10 (180) is noted to retain its framework structure in strong alkali solutions, attributed to the alkali-resistant aluminum hydroxide. At the same time, it has been demonstrated that 3D CAU-10-H can also transform into 3D CACl-10 (140) and 3D CACl-10 (130), and the halogen atoms of the ligands (-Cl) affect the alkali stability of the materials. Subsequently, the PVAm-CACl-10 (180)/MPSf mixed matrix membranes were prepared and applied for CH₄ /N₂ separation. The developed membrane exhibits the CH₄ permeance of 1647.99 GPU with a CH₄ /N₂ selectivity of 3.1. As a result, 2D CACl-10 (180), with a strong alkali stability and an acceptable CH₄ /N₂ membrane separation performance, represents a high potential of application in the membrane separation process.

Study of Polyvinyl Alcohol-SiO2 Nanoparticles Polymeric Membrane in Wastewater Treatment Containing Zinc Ions

The main goal of the present paper was to synthesize the polyvinyl alcohol-SiO₂ nanoparticles polymeric membrane by wet-phase inversion method. The efficiency of prepared membranes (without and with SiO₂) was investigated using a versatile laboratory electrodialysis system filled with simulated wastewaters that contain zinc ions. All experiments were performed at following conditions: the applied voltage at electrodes of 5, 10 and 15 V, a concentration of zinc ions solution of 2 g L⁻¹, time for each test of 1 h and at room temperature. The demineralization rate, extraction percentage of zinc ions, current efficiency and energy consumption were determined. The polymeric membranes were characterized by Fourier Transforms Infrared Spectroscopy-Attenuated Total Reflection (FTIR-ATR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The higher value of percentage removal of zinc ions (over 65%) was obtained for the polymeric membrane with SiO₂ nanoparticles, at 15 V. The FTIR-ATR spectra show a characteristic peak located at ~1078 cm⁻¹ assigned to the Si-O-Si asymmetrical stretching. SEM images of the polymeric membrane with SiO₂ nanoparticles show that the nanoparticles and polymer matrix were well compatible. The impedance results indicated that the SiO₂ nanoparticles induced the higher proton conductivity. The final polymeric membranes can be used for the removal of various metallic ions, dyes, organic or inorganic colloids, bacteria or other microorganisms from different natural waters and wastewaters.
