Efficiency Research of Conformal Channel Geometries Produced by Additive Manufacturing in Plastic Injection Mold Cores (Inserts) Used in Automotive Industry

In the production of geometries that traditional methods cannot produce, it is seen that additive manufacturing (AM) technology, which has come to the fore, has been used extensively in conformal cooling channel (CCC) applications in recent years. This study, conducted within the scope of CCC's use of applied mold cores in automotive industry plastic part production, aimed to reduce the cycle time in the injection printing process. The v1 geometry, which gives the analysis results for ideal printing quality from the channel geometries developed with three different design approaches, is produced with direct metal laser sintering, which is an AM laser sintering technology, and the injection printing cycle time has been reduced by 38%. CCC applied the study's primary motivation to develop duct geometry to provide balanced cooling in the automotive industry's mold cores produced with AM. It is known that the Computer Numerical Control machining process in traditional mold methods does not allow the processing of the channels in the internal geometries, and the deep areas where the heat is concentrated cannot be cooled sufficiently. In the study, CCC geometries where AM design parameters are used effectively and the balanced cooling performance expected from the die core can be achieved. The effects of different geometries on production are discussed.

Improving the Wear and Corrosion Resistance of Maraging Part Obtained by Cold Gas Spray Additive Manufacturing

The use of the cold gas spray (CGS) process as a metal additive manufacturing (MAM) technique for metallic part production has been deeply studied recently, mainly due to its advantages over other MAM techniques. CGS MAM is a high-productivity technique with a very low level of particle oxidation, microstructural changes, phase transformations, or deleterious residual thermal stresses in the part. The use of CGS MAM to produce maraging parts represents a gain for the industry by saving machining time and preventing raw material waste. Its wear resistance and corrosion behavior were evaluated in this work and were compared with cermet coatings deposited by high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) on the CGS MAM maraging. This work presents the innovative and effective combination of different thermal spraying processes and materials to obtain MAM maraging parts with higher wear resistance, evaluating abrasion, sliding, and water erosion wear types.

Current Status of Liquid Metal Printing

This review focuses on the current state of the art in liquid metal additive manufacturing (AM), an emerging and growing family of related printing technologies used to fabricate near-net shape or fully free-standing metal objects. The various printing modes and droplet generation techniques as applied to liquid metals are discussed. Two different printing modes, continuous and drop-on-demand (DOD), exist for liquid metal printing and are based on commercial inkjet printing technology. Several techniques are in various stages of development from laboratory testing, prototyping, to full commercialization. Printing techniques include metal droplet generation by piezoelectric actuation or impact-driven, electrostatic, pneumatic, electrohydrodynamic (EHD), magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) ejection, or droplet generation by application of a high-power laser. The impetus for development of liquid metal printing was the precise, and often small scale, jetting of solder alloys for microelectronics applications. The fabrication of higher-melting-point metals and alloys and the printing of free-standing metal objects has provided further motivation for the research and development of liquid metal printing.
