Influence of Oil Viscosity on the Tribological Behavior of a Laser-Textured Ti6Al4V Alloy

Laser texturing with a dimple pattern was applied to modify a Ti6Al4V alloy at the micro level, aiming to improve its friction and wear resistance in combination with oil lubrication to optimize the performance in demanding industrial environments. The tribological analysis was performed on four different dimple-textured surfaces with varying dimple size and dimple-to-dimple distance and under lubrication with three different oils, i.e., T9, VG46, and VG100, to reflect the oil viscosity's influence on the friction/wear of the laser-textured Ti6Al4V alloy. The results show that the surfaces with the highest texture density showed the most significant COF reduction of around 10% in a low-viscosity oil (T9). However, in high-viscosity oils (VG46 and VG100), the influence of the laser texturing on the COF was less pronounced. A wear analysis revealed that the laser texturing intensified the abrasive wear, especially on surfaces with a higher texture density. For low-texturing-density surfaces, less wear was observed for low- and medium-viscosity oils (T9 and VG46). For medium-to-high-texturing densities, the high-viscosity oil (VG100) provided the best contact conditions and wear results. Overall, reduced wear, even below the non-texturing case, was observed for sample 50-200 in VG100 lubrication, indicating the combined effect of oil reservoirs and increased oil-film thickness within the dimples due to the high viscosity.

Research Progress of Coating Preparation on Light Alloys in Aviation Field: A Review

This paper systematically introduces the application status of coating-preparation technology on light alloys in the field of aviation parts repair. Included are the advantages and disadvantages of thermal spraying technology and laser cladding technology in the application process, as well as the research status and application prospects of the emerging cold spray (CS) technology and supersonic laser deposition (SLD) technology. Compared with traditional thermal-spraying technology, CS has many advantages, such as low spraying temperature, low oxygen content of the coating, and low porosity, which can effectively avoid oxidation, burning loss, phase change, and grain length during thermal spraying. CS can prepare oxygen-sensitive, heat-sensitive, amorphous, and nanomaterial coatings that are difficult to prepare by traditional thermal-spraying technology. However, in the preparation of high-strength super-hard alloys, CS has shortcomings such as low deposition efficiency and bonding strength. SLD overcomes the shortcomings of CS while inheriting the advantages of CS. In the future, both technologies will be widely used in repairing and remanufacturing in the field of aviation. Based on the principles of CS and SLD, this paper introduces, in detail, the deposition mechanism of the coating, and the specific application examples of CS in the aviation field at the present stage are described. The research and application status of the two technologies in the fields of anti-corrosion coating, wear-resistant coating, functional coating, repair, and remanufacturing in recent years are reviewed. Finally, the application and development prospects of CS and SLD are discussed.

Enhanced Biotribological and Anticorrosion Properties and Bioactivity of Ti6Al4V Alloys with Laser Texturing

The poor biotribological properties and bioinertness of Ti6Al4V have restricted its application in biomedical materials. In this study, microgrooves of different widths were prepared on the surface of a Ti6Al4V alloy by laser treatment. The tribological properties under dry lubrication and simulated body fluid (SBF) lubrication conditions, the electrochemical corrosion properties in SBF solution, and the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) behavior on the surfaces were systematically tested. The corresponding mechanisms were discussed. The results showed that Ti6Al4V with a microgroove width of 45 μm (Ti64-45) exhibited excellent wear resistance with decreasing wear rates of 89.79 and 85.43% under dry friction and SBF lubrication compared to the Ti64 sample, which might be due to the increase of surface microhardness. Moreover, the excellent anticorrosion performance of Ti64-45 was attributed to the grain refinement on the titanium alloy surface with a lower volume fraction ratio of β phase to α phase. In addition, the microgrooves with a width of 45 μm are more conducive to BMSC proliferation and adhesion, related to promoting cell signal transduction due to cell extrusion. These studies imply that the microgroove structures are potential for application in the medical field.

Investigation of the Wettability Properties of Different Textured Lead/Lead-Free Bronze Coatings

Hydraulic components are often subjected to sliding contacts under starved or mixed lubrication. The condition of starved lubrication occurs during the start-up phase of the hydraulic machines or at low working temperature, causing friction and wear of components such as the cylinder block or the valve plate. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the hydrophobicity and oleophilic behavior of lead/lead-free bronze coatings under different texture conditions obtained by varying the diameter and the density of the dimples. The wettability tests were performed using sessile drop tests with oil and water liquids. The dimple parameters were analyzed using confocal microscopy, while the XRF analyses were performed to evaluate the composition of the bronze coatings. Based on the wettability measurements using oil and water, it was possible to assess that the porous surface acted as oil reservoirs that could prolong the life of lubricating oil layer, and may have resulted in a superior wear resistance. Furthermore, a relevant hydrophobicity was highlighted, suggesting that the surface texturing promoted the water-repellent barrier action on the surface. The experimental results showed that the discrepancy in surface properties in oil and water was raised when using the lead bronze coating. These coupled oleophilic and hydrophobic behaviors could play a beneficial role in sustaining the durability of a lubricating oil layer under a condition of continuous water-droplet impact.

Water versus Oil Lubrication of Laser-Textured Ti6Al4V Alloy upon Addition of MoS2 Nanotubes for Green Tribology

A Nd-YAG laser was used for texturing the Ti6Al4V surface with dimples of diameter 50 and 100 µm and centre-to-centre distance 100, 200 and 400 µm, defining the surface texture density. The tribological evaluation was conducted to analyse and compare the behaviour of un-textured and laser-textured samples under water in comparison to oil (PAO6) lubrication without and with the addition of MoS₂ nanotubes into the lubricant. MoS₂ nanotubes had a positive effect on friction in both media for laser-textured Ti6Al4V. Evaluation of friction and wear in water and PAO6 showed a comparable tribological response in water to oil for specific laser-textured configurations, proving the novel concept of green tribology for laser texturing in combination with MoS₂ nanotubes/water lubrication.
