Correlation of Morphology and Crystal Structure of Metal Powders Produced by Electrolysis Processes

Effective and green in-situ remediation strategies based on TEMPO-nanocellulose/lignin/MIL-100(Fe) hydrogel nanocomposite adsorbent for lead and copper in agricultural soils

Hydrogel adsorbents are promising tools for reducing heavy metals' bioavailability in contaminated soil. However, their practical feasibility remains limited by the low stability, inefficient removal efficiency, and potential secondary pollution. Optimizing the adsorption operation and the functional properties of hydrogel adsorbents could eliminate this method's drawbacks. Herein, three innovative in-situ remediation strategies for Pb/Cu-contaminated soil were adopted based on the concept of novel TEMPO-cellulose (TO-NFCs)/lignin/acrylamide@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (NCLMH). Characteristic analyses revealed ideal Pb/Cu adsorption mechanisms by swelling, complexation, electrical attraction, and ion exchange via carboxyl/hydroxyl/carbonyl groups and unsaturated Fe(III) sites on ANCMH besides FeOOH formation. The highest maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cu(II) on ANCMH were 416.39 and 133.98 mg/g, under pH 6.5, governed by pseudo-second-order/Freundlich models. Greenhouse pot experiments with contaminated soils amended with two-depth layers of 0.5% NCLMHs (SA@NCLMH) displayed a decline in Pb and Cu bioavailability up to 85.9% and 74.5% within 45 d. Soil column studies simulating continuous water soil flushing coupled with NCLMH layers, instead of conventional extractant fluids, and connected to NCLMH-sand column as purification unit (CF@NCLMH) achieved higher removal rates for Pb, and Cu of 89.5% and 77.2% within 24 h. Alternatively, conducting multiple-pulse soil flushing mode (MF@NCLMH) gained the highest Pb and Cu removal of 96.5% and 85.4%, as the water flushing-stop flux events allowed adequate water movement/residence period, promoting Pb/Cu desorption-adsorption from soil to NCLMH. Also, the NCLMH-sand column conducting and easy separation of the stable/reusable NCLMHs prevented the potential secondary pollution. Interestingly, the three remediated soils reached the corresponding regulation of the permissible limits for Pb and Cu residential scenarios in medium-to-heavily agricultural polluted soils, alleviating the Pb/Cu bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity symptoms in cultivated wheat, especially after MF@NCLMH treatment. This study introduces promising alternative remediation strategies with high sustainability and feasibility in acidic-to-neutral heavy metal-contaminated agricultural soil.

Analysis of the Particle Size and Morphology of Tin Powder Synthesized by the Electrolytic Method

This article discusses the effect of electrolysis parameters on the particle size and morphology of the tin powder synthesized by the electrolytic method. The electrolytic method is simple and can eliminate the risk of lead and arsenic gas emissions owing to the low temperature of the process. The effects of tin concentration in a sulfate-based electrolyte, a mass ratio of thiourea/gelatin as additives, current density, and electrolysis time on the particle size and morphology of the synthesized tin powder were examined. Pure tin and titanium plates were used as the anode and the cathode, respectively. After the electrolysis experiments were completed, the synthesized tin powders were analyzed by a particle size analyzer, a scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffraction. The optimum condition of the experiment that resulted in the highest D90 was achieved at an initial concentration of SnSO4 = 3 g/L, a mass ratio of thiourea/gelatin = 1/4, a current density of 1 A/dm2, and a 10 min electrolysis time. Under this condition, 90% of the tin powder size obtained was smaller than 2.279 μm, showing a rounded morphology with a length-to-width ratio of 1.15. The current efficiency increased with increasing tin concentration, decreasing current density, and a shorter electrolysis time.

Divalent Metal Ion Depletion from Wastewater by RVC Cathodes: A Critical Review

In this paper, a critical review of results obtained using a reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) three-dimensional cathode for the electrochemical depletion of various divalent ions, such as Cu+2, Cd+2, Pb+2, Zn+2, Ni+2, and Co+2, often present in wastewater, has been carried out. By analyzing the kinetics and fluid dynamics of the process found in literature, a general dimensionless equation, Sh = f(Re), has been determined, describing a general trend for all the analyzed systems regardless of the geometry, dimensions, and starting conditions. Thus, a map in the log(Sh) vs. log(Re) plane has been reported by characterizing the whole ion electrochemical depletion process and highlighting the existence of a good correlation among all the results. Moreover, because in recent years, the interest in using this three-dimensional cathode material seems to have slowed, the intent is to revive it as a useful tool for metal recovery, recycling processes, and water treatments.

Morphology and Structure of Electrolytically Synthesized Tin Dendritic Nanostructures

The formation of tin dendritic nanostructures by electrolysis from the alkaline electrolyte has been investigated. Morphology and structure of Sn dendrites produced applying both potentiostatic and galvanostatic regimes of the electrolysis are characterized by SEM and XRD, respectively. Depending on the applied cathodic potentials, three types of Sn dendrites were obtained: (a) needle-like and spear-like, (b) fern-like, and (c) stem-like dendrites. The very branchy dendrites with branches of the prismatic shape obtained by the galvanostatic regime of electrolysis represented a novel type of Sn dendrites, not previously reported in the literature. To explain the formation of various dendritic forms, correlation with the polarization characteristics for this electrodeposition system is considered. The needle-like and the spear-like dendrites represented monocrystals of (200),(400) preferred orientation, the fern-like dendrites exhibited the predominant (220),(440) preferred orientation, while in the stem-like particles Sn crystallites were oriented to a greater extent in the (440) crystal plane than in other planes. The galvanostatically synthesized Sn particles possessed the strong (200),(400) preferred orientation. The strong influence of parameters and regimes of electrodeposition on structural characteristics of Sn dendrites is explained by the fundamental laws of electrocrystallization taking into consideration the concept of slow-growing and fast-growing crystal planes.
