Tailoring of Biodegradable Magnesium Alloy Surface with Schiff Base Coating via Electrostatic Spraying for Better Corrosion Resistance

Dynamic Marine Atmospheric Corrosion Behavior of AZ91 Mg Alloy Sailing from Yellow Sea to Western Pacific Ocean

In this work, the dynamic marine atmospheric corrosion behavior of AZ91 Mg alloy sailing from Yellow Sea to Western Pacific Ocean was studied. The corrosion rates were measured using the weight loss method. The microstructure, phase, and chemical composition of corroded samples were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS. The results show that the evolution of corrosion rates of AZ91 Mg alloy was divided into three stages: rapidly increasing during the first 3 months, then remaining stable for the next three months, and finally decreasing after 6 months. The annual corrosion rate of Mg alloy reached 32.50 μm/y after exposure for 12 months in a dynamic marine atmospheric environment, which was several times higher than that of the static field exposure tests. AZ91 magnesium alloy was mainly subjected to localized corrosion with more destructiveness to Mg parts, which is mainly due to the synergistic effect of high relative humidity, the high deposition rate of chloride ion, sulfur dioxide acidic gas produced by fuel combustion, and rapid temperature changes caused by the alternating changes in longitude and latitude during navigation. As the exposure time increased, the corrosion pits gradually increased and deepened. The maximum depth of the corrosion pit was 197 μm after 12 months of exposure, which is almost 6 times the average corrosion depth. This study provides scientific data support for the application of magnesium alloys in shipborne aircraft and electronic equipment. The results could provide guidance for the design of new magnesium alloys and development of anti-corrosion technologies.

Preparation of Bis-Thiophene Schiff Alkali-Copper Metal Complex for Metal Corrosion Inhibition

Due to the obvious numerous economic and technical consequences of the corrosion process, its inhibition is one of the most critical aspects of current research. A corrosion inhibitor for the bis-thiophene Schiff base copper-metal complex Cu(II)@Thy-2 was investigated here, which was synthesized via a coordination reaction with a bis-thiophene Schiff base (Thy-2) as a ligand and copper chloride (CuCl₂-2H₂O) as a ligand metal salt. When the corrosion inhibitor concentration was increased to 100 ppm, the self-corrosion current density I_coor reached a minimum of 2.207 × 10^-5 A/cm², the charge transfer resistance reached a maximum of 932.5 Ω·cm², and the corrosion inhibition efficiency reached a maximum of 95.2%, with the corrosion inhibition efficiency showing a trend of increasing first and then decreasing with concentration increase. After adding Cu(II)@Thy-2 corrosion inhibitor, a uniformly distributed dense corrosion inhibitor adsorption film formed on the surface of the Q235 metal substrate, significantly improving the corrosion profile compared to both before and after the addition of the corrosion inhibitor. Before and after the addition of corrosion inhibitor, the metal surface's contact angle CA increased from 54.54° to 68.37°, showing that the adsorbed corrosion inhibitor film decreased the metal surface's hydrophilicity and increased its hydrophobicity.

Extracellular Matrix Coatings on Cardiovascular Materials—A Review

Vascular transplantation is an effective and common treatment for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the low biocompatibility of implants is a major problem that hinders its clinical application. Surface modification of implants with extracellular matrix (ECM) coatings is an effective approach to improve the biocompatibility of cardiovascular materials. The complete ECM seems to have better biocompatibility, which may give cardiovascular biomaterials a more functional surface. The use of one or several ECM proteins to construct a surface allows customization of coating composition and structure, possibly resulting in some unique functions. ECM is a complex three-dimensional structure composed of a variety of functional biological macromolecules, and changes in the composition will directly affect the function of the coating. Therefore, understanding the chemical composition of the ECM and its interaction with cells is beneficial to provide new approaches for coating surface modification. This article reviews novel ECM coatings, including coatings composed of intact ECM and biomimetic coatings tailored from several ECM proteins, and introduces new advances in coating fabrication. These ECM coatings are effective in improving the biocompatibility of vascular grafts.
