Temperature-Induced Liquid-Liquid Transition in Metallic Melts: A Brief Review on the New Physical Phenomenon

Effect of Melt Overheating on Structure and Mechanical Properties of Al-Mg-Si Cast Alloy

The paper discusses the complex effect of melt overheating with subsequent fast cooling down to the pouring temperature on the crystallization process, microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si aluminum alloy. The results obtained facilitated the establishment of rational modes of melt overheating, leading to a significant change in the dispersion and morphology of structural components. In particular, with an increase in the melt overheating temperature to 900 °C with holding and subsequent rapid cooling to the casting temperature, a decrease in the average size of dendritic cells of the aluminum solid solution from 39 μm to 13 μm was observed. We also noticed the refinement of eutectic inclusions of the Mg2Si phase with compact morphology. An increased level of mechanical properties was noted; the maximum values of tensile strength and elongation reached 228 MPa and 5.24%, respectively, which exceeded the initial values by 22.5% and 52.3%, correspondingly. The microhardness of the aluminum solid solution sequentially increased from 38.21 to 56.5 HV with an increase in the temperature during melt overheating. According to the EDS linear scanning, an increase in the superheat temperature of the melt is accompanied by an increase in the degree of saturation of the solid solution with magnesium.

Thermophysical Measurements in Liquid Alloys and Phase Diagram Studies

Towards the construction of pressure-dependent phase diagrams of binary alloy systems, both thermophysical measurements and thermodynamic modeling are employed. High-accuracy measurements of sound velocity, density, and electrical resistivity were performed for selected metallic elements from columns III to V and their alloys in the liquid phase. Sound velocity measurements were made using ultrasonic techniques, density measurements using the gamma radiation attenuation method, and electrical resistivity measurements were performed using the four probe method. Sound velocity and density data, measured at ambient pressure, were incorporated into a thermodynamic model to calculate the pressure dependence of binary phase diagrams. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed on binary systems to study phase separation and identify phase transitions in the liquid state.

Lead-Bismuth Eutectic: Atomic and Micro-Scale Melt Evolution

Element clustering and structural features of liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) alloy have been investigated up to 720 °C by means of high temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD), X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Photoemission Microscopy (SPEM) at the Elettra synchrotron in Trieste. The short-range order in liquid metal after melting corresponds to the cuboctahedral atomic arrangement and progressively evolves towards the icosahedral one as temperature increases. Such process, that involve a negative expansion of the alloy, is mainly connected to the reduction of atom distance in Pb–Pb pairs which takes place from 350 °C to 520 °C. On an atomic scale, it is observed a change of the relative number of Bi–Bi, Pb–Pb, and Pb–Bi pairs. The Pb–Bi pairs are detected only at a temperature above ~350 °C, and its fraction progressively increases, giving rise to a more homogeneous distribution of the elements. SPEM results showed evidence that the process of chemical homogenization on an atomic scale is preceded and accompanied by homogenization on micro-scale. Clusters rich of Bi and Pb, which are observed after melting, progressively dissolve as temperature increases: Only a few residuals remain at 350 °C, and no more clusters are detected a 520 °C.

Liquid-liquid transition in supercooled gallium alloys under nanoconfinement

NMR studies of the thermal evolution of the Ga-In-Sn and Ga-In liquid alloys embedded into opal matrices were carried out. Temperature dependences of the gallium lineshape, shift of the resonance frequency (Knight shift), and intensity were obtained upon cooling down to the alloy freezing and subsequent warming. A second high-frequency ⁷¹Ga NMR signal emerged for both alloys upon cooling, the NMR line intensity transferring gradually into this additional signal. The Knight shifts of the signals differed noticeably. The transformations of the gallium line upon warming were continuous and not affected by changes in the alloy compositions induced by melting. ¹¹⁵In NMR measurements were conducted to monitor the alloy compositions at freezing and melting. The findings suggest the occurrence of the liquid-liquid phase transition in the strongly supercooled alloys under nanoconfinement.

Pressure-induced structural change in liquid GeI4

The similarity in the shape of the melting curve of GeI₄ to that of SnI₄ suggests that a liquid-liquid transition as observed in liquid SnI₄ is also expected to occur in liquid GeI₄. Because the slope of the melting curve of GeI₄ abruptly changes at around 3 GPa, in situ synchrotron diffraction measurements were conducted to examine closely the structural changes upon compression at around 3 GPa. The reduced radial distribution functions of the high- and low-pressure liquid states of GeI₄ share the same feature inherent in the high-pressure (high-density) and low-pressure (low-density) radial distribution functions of liquid SnI₄. This feature allows us to introduce local order parameters that we may use to observe the transition. Unlike the transition in liquid SnI₄, the transition from the low-pressure to the high-pressure structure seems sluggish. We speculate that the liquid-liquid critical point of GeI₄ is no longer a thermodynamically stable state and is slightly located below the melting curve. As a result, the structural change is said to be a crossover rather than a transition. The behavior of the local-order parameters implies a metastable extension of the liquid-liquid phase boundary with a negative slope.

Dependence of Solidification for Bi2Te3-xSex Alloys on Their Liquid States

The resistivity versus temperature (ρ-T) behaviours of liquid n-type Bi₂Te_3−xSe_x (x = 0.3, 0.45 and 0.6) alloys are explored up to 1050 °C. A clear hump is observed on all ρ-T curves of the three studied Bi₂Te_3−xSe_x melts during the heating process, which suggests that a temperature-induced liquid-liquid structural transition takes place in the melts. Based on this information, the solidification behaviours and microstructures of the alloys with different liquid states are investigated. The samples that experienced liquid structural transition show that the nucleation and growth undercooling degrees are conspicuously enlarged and the solidification time is shortened. As a result, the solidified lamellae are refined and homogenized, the prevalence of low-angle grain boundaries between these lamellae is increased, and the Vicker Hardness is enhanced. Atom probe tomography analyses prove that there is no segregation or nanoprecipitation within the grains, but the Te-rich eutectic structure and the evolution of composition near the Te-matrix phase boundary are investigated in a sample that experienced liquid structural transition. Our work implies that the solidification behaviours of Bi₂Te_3−xSe_x alloys are strongly related to their parent liquid states, providing an alternative approach to tailor the thermoelectric and mechanical properties even when only a simple solidification process is performed.
