Abstract
The detrimental impact of soil salinization on crop productivity and agricultural economy has garnered significant attention. A rhizosphere bacterium with favorable salt tolerance and plant growth-promoting (PGP) functions was isolated in this work. The bacterium was identified as Enterobacter through 16 S rDNA sequencing analysis and designated as Enterobacter sp. JIV1. Interestingly, the presence of putrescine (Put), which had been shown to contribute in reducing abiotic stress damage to plants, significantly promoted strain JIV1 to generate 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic (ACC) deaminase, dissolve phosphorus and secrete indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). However, the synergy of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and Put in improving plant salt resistance has not been extensively studied. In this study, strain JIV1 and exogenous Put effectively mitigated the inhibitory impact of salt stress simulated by 200 mM NaCl on rice (Oryza sativa L.) growth. The chlorophyll accumulation, photosynthetic efficiency and antioxidant capacity of rice were also significantly strengthened. Notably, the combined application of strain JIV1 and Put outperformed individual treatments. Moreover, the co-addition of strain JIV1 and Put increased soil protease and urease activities by 451.97% and 51.70% compared to that of salt treatment group. In general, Put-assisted PGPR JIV1 provides a new perspective on alleviating the salt-induced negative impacts on plants.

Abstract
Biofilm formation represents a pivotal and adaptable trait among microorganisms within natural environments. This attribute plays a multifaceted role across diverse contexts, including environmental, aquatic, industrial, and medical systems. While previous research has primarily focused on the adverse impacts of biofilms, harnessing their potential effectively could confer substantial advantages to humanity. In the face of escalating environmental pressures (e.g., drought, salinity, extreme temperatures, and heavy metal pollution), which jeopardize global crop yields, enhancing crop stress tolerance becomes a paramount endeavor for restoring sufficient food production. Recently, biofilm-forming plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have emerged as promising candidates for agricultural application. These biofilms are evidence of microorganism colonization on plant roots. Their remarkable stress resilience empowers crops to thrive and yield even in harsh conditions. This is accomplished through increased root colonization, improved soil properties, and the synthesis of valuable secondary metabolites (e.g., ACC deaminase, acetin, 2,3-butanediol, proline, etc.). This article elucidates the mechanisms underpinning the role of biofilm-forming PGPB in bolstering plant growth amidst environmental challenges. Furthermore, it explores the tangible applications of these biofilms in agriculture and delves into strategies for manipulating biofilm formation to extract maximal benefits in practical crop production scenarios.

Abstract
Osmotolerant yeasts are considered one of the major contaminants responsible for spoilage in honey. To address the signature volatile components of jujube honey contaminated by Zygosaccharomyces rouxii, headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and chemometrics analyses were used to analyze the variation of volatile substances during early contamination of mature and immature jujube honey. Undecanal, methyl butyrate, methyl 2-nonenoate, methyl hexanoate, and 2-methyl-3-pentanone were identified as signature volatiles of jujube honey contaminated with Z. rouxii. In addition, methyl heptanoate, 2,6,10-trimethyltetradecane, and heptanal were identified as potential volatile signatures for immature jujube honey. The R2 and Q2 of OPLS-DA analyses ranged from 0.736 to 0.955, and 0.991 to 0.997, which indicates that the constructed model was stable and predictive. This study has demonstrated that HS-SPME-GC-MS could be used to distinguish Z. rouxii-contaminated jujube honey from uncontaminated honey based on variation in VOCs, and could provide theoretical support for the use of HS-SPME-GC-MS for the rapid detection of honey decomposition caused by Z. rouxii, which could improve nutritional quality and reduce economic losses.

Abstract
As salt stress has a negative impact on plant growth and crop yield, it is very important to identify and develop any available biotechnology which can improve the salt tolerance of plants. Inoculation with plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is a proven environmentally friendly biotechnological resource for increasing the salt stress tolerance of plants and has a potential in-field application. In addition, bacterial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) are signal molecules that may have beneficial roles in the soil-plant-microbiome ecosystem. We investigated the effects of mVOCs emitted by Pseudomona putida SJ46 and SJ04 on Mentha piperita grown under different levels of NaCl stress by evaluating their growth-promoting potential and capacity to increase salt tolerance effects. Furthermore, we evaluated under control and salt stress conditions the biocontrol ability of VOCs emitted by both these strains to inhibit the growth of Alternaria alternata and Sclerotium rolfsii. The VOCs emitted by both strains under control conditions did not lead to an significant improvement in peppermint growth. However, under salt stress conditions (75 or 100 mM NaCl), an amelioration of its physiological status was observed, with this effect being greater at 100 mM NaCl. This led to an enhancement of the number of leaves and nodes and, increased the shoot fresh and root dry weight by approximately twice in relation to control stressed plants. Moreover, the VOCs released by the two bacteria grown in control or saline media showed a significant reduction in the mycelial growth of A. alternata. In contrast, S. rolfsii growth was reduced 40% by the mVOCs released only under control conditions, with no effects being observed under salt stress. We also explored the composition of the bacterial volatile profiles by means of a solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS) analysis. From the headspace of SJ46, three VOCs were identified: n-octanol, decane and tetradecane. The emission of SJ04 had the same chromatographic profile, with the addition of two more compounds: 1-(N-phenyl carbamyl)-2-morpholino cyclohexene and tridecane. Only compounds that were not present in the headspace of the control groups were recorded. The salt stress conditions where the bacteria were grown did not qualitatively modify the mVOC emissions. Taken together, our results suggest that plant-associated rhizobacterial VOCs play a potentially important role in modulating plant salt tolerance and reducing fungal growth. Thus, biological resources represent novel tools for counteracting the deleterious effects of salt stress and have the potential to be exploited in sustainable agriculture. Nevertheless, future studies are necessary to investigate technological improvements for bacterial VOC application under greenhouse and open field conditions.

Abstract
In addition to white jasmine rice, Thailand has many native-colored rice varieties with numerous health benefits and the potential to become a global economic crop. However, the chemical characteristics of aromatic substances in native-colored rice are still mostly unknown. This study aimed to identify the key volatile aroma compounds and the biosynthetic pathways possibly involved in their formation in Thai native-colored rice varieties, and thus leading to the search for potential genetic markers for breeding colored rice with better aromatic properties. Twenty-three rice varieties in four categories: aromatic white, aromatic black, non-aromatic black, and non-aromatic red, were investigated (n=10 per variety). Seed husks were removed before the analysis of rice volatile aromas by static headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Untargeted metabolomics approach was used to discover the key volatile compounds in colored rice. Forty-eight compounds were detected. Thirty-eight of the 48 compounds significantly differed among groups at p<0.05, 28 of which at p<0.0001, with the non-aromatic black and red rice containing much lower content of most volatile constituents than the aromatic black and white rice. Focusing on the aromatic black rice, the samples appeared to contain high level of both compound groups of aldehydes (3-methylbutanal, 2-methylbutanal, 2-methylpropanal, pentanal, hexanal) and alcohols (butane-2,3-diol, pentan-1-ol, hexan-1-ol). Biosynthetically, these distinctive black-rice volatile compounds were proposed to be formed from the metabolic degradation of branched-chain amino acids (L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid), involving the branched-chain aminotransferases and keto-acid decarboxylases and the 9-lipoxygonases and 13-lipoxygeases, respectively. The proposed degradative pathways of amino acids and fatty acids were well agreed with the profiles key volatile compounds detected in the Thai native-colored rice varieties.

Abstract
The genera Serratia and Enterobacter belong to the Enterobacteriaceae family and several members have been described as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). However, how these bacteria influence growth and development is unclear. We performed in vitro interaction assays between either Serratia sp. H6 or Enterobacter sp. L7 with Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings to analyze their effects on plant growth. In experiments of co-cultivation distant from the root tip, Enterobacter sp. decreased root length, markedly increased lateral root number, and slightly increased plant biomass by 33%, 230%, and 69%, respectively, and relative to the control. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from Serratia sp. H6 but not those from Enterobacter sp. L7 promoted Arabidopsis growth. A blend of volatile compounds from the two bacteria had effects on plant growth that were similar to those observed for volatile compounds from H6 only. At several densities, the direct contact of roots with Serratia sp. H6 had phytostimulant properties but Enterobacter sp. L7 had clear deleterious effects. Together, these results suggest that direct contact and VOCs of Serratia sp. H6 were the main mechanisms to promote plant growth of A. thaliana, while diffusible compounds of Enterobacter sp. L7 were predominant in their PGPR activity.

Abstract
Endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacteria are versatile and widely distributed in plants. Numerous strains of endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacteria are used as biofertilizers to minimize the utilization of chemical fertilizers, improve nutrient use efficiency, increase crop productivity, and reduce environmental pollution. However, the mechanism underlying the interaction between nitrogen-fixing bacteria and plants is still unclear. So, the present study was planned to assess the effects of endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacteria on sugarcane by analyzing the changes in physiological and biochemical activities. In the current study, Klebsiella variicola DX120E, an endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacterium, was inoculated on sugarcane varieties B8 and ROC22 to evaluate the effects on nitrogen and carbon metabolism-related enzymatic activity and biomass. Results showed that DX120E inoculation improved the enzymatic activities related to gluconeogenesis and nitrogen metabolism increased the sugarcane plant’s height, cane juice Brix, biomass, chlorophyll, and soluble sugar content in sugarcane. Metabolomics analysis revealed that the metabolome modules were highly enriched in carbon and nitrogen metabolic pathways of strain-affected sugarcane than uninoculated control. The identified carbohydrates were associated with the glycolysis or gluconeogenesis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in plants. Metabolomic profiling in the present investigation showed that carbohydrate metabolism is coordinated with nitrogen metabolism to provide carbon skeletons and energy to amino acid synthesis, and amino acid degradation results in several metabolites used by the citric acid cycle as an energy source. Moreover, differentially expressed metabolites of non-proteinogenic amino acids have a further complementary role to the action of endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Meanwhile, a significant difference in metabolites and metabolic pathways present in stems and leaves of B8 and ROC22 varieties was found. This study discovered the potential benefits of DX120E in sugarcane and suggested candidate regulatory elements to enhance interactions between nitrogen-fixing microbes and sugarcane.
