Structuring of Bioceramics by Micro-Grinding for Dental Implant Applications

Comparative Study on Micro-Grinding Performance of 2.5D Cf/SiCs, 2.5D SiCf/SiCs, and SiC Ceramics

To investigate the micro-grinding process and performance of 2.5D Cf/SiC composites and 2.5D SiCf/SiC composites in depth, single-factor micro-grinding experiments were conducted by using SiC ceramics as a comparison. Differences in the material removal process, surface microstructure, surface roughness, and grinding force of the three materials under the same grinding parameters were comparatively analyzed. The results indicate that crack propagation is severe during the micro-grinding process of SiC ceramics. The ground surface is uneven, accompanied by pit defects and large surface roughness Ra. However, the presence of reinforcing fibers and interfaces in the two types of composites can inhibit crack propagation or change their extension directions. Therefore, their surfaces are smooth and flat after grinding, with small defects and low surface roughness Ra. In addition, the grinding processes of the two composites are both related to fiber orientation. There are differences in crack propagation paths and fiber fracture positions in the weft fiber layer and the radial fiber layer, which result in different forms of grinding defects. During micro-grinding, the real-time force signals of 2.5D Cf/SiC composites and 2.5D SiCf/SiC composites are relatively stable, while the signals of SiC ceramics have a large number of spikes. The average micro-grinding force of the three materials is: SiC ceramics > 2.5D SiCf/SiC composites > 2.5D Cf/SiC composites.

Investigation of the Effect of Process Parameters on Bone Grinding Performance Based on On-Line Measurement of Temperature and Force Sensors

This study investigates the effect of process parameters on neurosurgical bone grinding performance using a miniature surgical diamond wheel. Bone grinding is an important procedure in the expanded endonasal approach for removing the cranial bone and access to the skull base tumor via nasal corridor. Heat and force are generated during the grinding process, which may cause thermal and mechanical damage to the adjacent tissues. This study investigates the effect of grinding process parameters (including the depth of cut, feed rate, and spindle speed) on the bone grinding performance using temperature and force measurement sensors in order to optimize the grinding process. An orthogonal experimental design with a standard orthogonal array, L₉ (3³), is selected with each parameter in three levels. The experimental results have been statistically analyzed using the range and variance analysis methods in order to determine the importance order of the process parameters. The results indicate that the effect of the cutting depth on the grinding temperature and normal force is the largest, while the effect of the spindle speed on the tangential force is the largest. A high spindle speed would make the temperature rise to a certain extent; however, it significantly reduces the grinding force. At a certain spindle speed, a lower depth of cut and feed rate help to reduce the grinding temperature and force.

Green Ceramic Machining: Influence of the Cutting Speed and the Binder Percentage on the Y-TZP Behavior

The demand for inert bioceramics is always increasing in the dental field. Yttrium oxide tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) are oxide ceramics which are currently used because of their interesting mechanical properties due to a toughening transformation. Industrially speaking, machining of the ceramic before sintering (green body) is very common because it allows a better productivity and it reduces crack probability during the sintering process. The goal of this paper is to determine the behavior of green ceramic during the machining operation. This study is carried out on several blanks with different binder percentages. The specific cutting energy (SCE) and the surface quality (Ra and Rz) are determined for several cutting speeds. The SCE follows a logarithmic evolution when the cutting speed increases. Despite this increase, the Ra are relatively stable whatever the cutting speed and the binder percentage. At a low cutting speed, a higher Rz value is observed caused by pullout of material. The increase of cutting speed allows to stabilize the Rz value whatever the binder percentage. This study shows that the green ceramic has a pseudo-plastic behavior whose machinability depends mainly on the interaction between the material and the cutting edge of the tool, so unlike pre-sintered ceramic or metallic part cutting speed has a low influence on the quality of the machined part.

On Electrical Discharge Machining of Non-Conductive Ceramics: A Review

The inability of ceramic and nanoceramic processing without expensive diamond tools and with a high-material-removal rate hampers the scope of its potential applications and does not allow humanity to make a full shift to the sixth technological paradigm associated with Kuhn scientific revolutions and Kondratieff’s waves and restrains the growth of the economy. The authors completed a review on the research state of ceramic and nanoceramic processing by electrical discharge machining, which is possibly solved by two principal approaches associated with the usage of standard commercially available machine tools. The first approach is related to the introduction of expensive secondary phase; the second approach proposes initiate processing by adding auxiliary electrodes in the form of coating, suspension, aerosol, or 3D-printed layer based on the components of silver, copper, or graphite in combination with an improved dielectric oil environment by introducing graphite or carbon nanoparticles, which is hugely relevant today.
