Optical Frequency Combs in Quadratically Nonlinear Resonators

Observation of quantum-correlated twin beams in cascaded nonlinear interactions

We report on the generation of twin beams through a cascaded process of optical parametric oscillation in a doubly resonant second-harmonic generation system. These bright beams exhibit strong quantum correlations, enabling the observation of up to 5 dB of noise reduction in their intensity difference below the standard quantum limit.

Two-colour dissipative solitons and breathers in microresonator second-harmonic generation

Frequency conversion of dissipative solitons associated with the generation of broadband optical frequency combs having a tooth spacing of hundreds of giga-hertz is a topical challenge holding the key to practical applications in precision spectroscopy and data processing. The work in this direction is underpinned by fundamental problems in nonlinear and quantum optics. Here, we present the dissipative two-colour bright-bright and dark-dark solitons in a quasi-phase-matched microresonator pumped for the second-harmonic generation in the near-infrared spectral range. We also found the breather states associated with the pulse front motion and collisions. The soliton regime is found to be typical in slightly phase-mismatched resonators, while the phase-matched ones reveal broader but incoherent spectra and higher-order harmonic generation. Soliton and breather effects reported here exist for the negative tilt of the resonance line, which is possible only via the dominant contribution of second-order nonlinearity.

Mid-infrared frequency combs and staggered spectral patterns in χ(2) microresonators

The potential of frequency comb spectroscopy has aroused great interest in generating mid-infrared frequency combs in the integrated photonic setting. However, despite remarkable progress in microresonators and quantum cascade lasers, the availability of suitable mid-IR comb sources remains scarce. Here, we generate mid-IR microcombs relying on cascaded three-wave-mixing for the first time. By pumping a CdSiP₂ microresonator at 1.55 µm wavelength with a low power continuous wave laser, we generate χ⁽²⁾ frequency combs at 3.1 µm wavelength, with a span of about 30 nm. We observe ordinary combs states with a line spacing of the free spectral range of the resonator, and combs where the sideband numbers around the pump and half-harmonic alternate, forming staggered patterns of spectral lines. Our scheme for mid-IR microcomb generation is compatible with integrated telecom lasers. Therefore, it has the potential to be used as a simple and fully integrated mid-IR comb source, relying on only one single material.

Optical frequency combs in dispersion-controlled doubly resonant second-harmonic generation

We report on the experimental realization and a systematic study of optical frequency comb generation in doubly resonant intracavity second harmonic generation (SHG). The efficiency of intracavity nonlinear processes usually benefits from the increasing number of resonating fields. Yet, achieving the simultaneous resonance of different fields may be technically complicated, all the more when a phase matching condition must be fulfilled as well. In our cavity we can separately control the resonance condition for the fundamental and its second harmonic, by simultaneously acting on an intracavity dispersive element and on a piezo-mounted cavity mirror, without affecting the quasi-phase matching condition. In addition, by finely adjusting the laser-to-cavity detuning, we are able to observe steady comb emission across the whole resonance profile, revealing the multiplicity of comb structures, and the substantial role of thermal effects on their dynamics. Lastly, we report the results of numerical simulations of comb dynamics, which include photothermal effects, finding a good agreement with the experimental observations. Our system provides a framework for exploring the richness of comb dynamics in doubly resonant SHG systems, assisting the design of chip-scale quadratic comb generators.

Sech-squared Pockels solitons in the microresonator parametric down-conversion

We present an explicit sech-squared-soliton solution associated with the optical Pockels effect, achieved through the generation of the frequency combs via parametric down-conversion in optical microresonators with quadratic nonlinearity. This soliton contrasts the parametric sech-soliton describing the half-harmonic field in the limit of the large index mismatch, and associated with the cascaded-Kerr effect. We predict differences in the spectral profiles and powers of the Pockels and cascaded-Kerr solitons, and report that the pump power threshold of the former agree with the recent experimental observations.

Fine structure of second-harmonic resonances in χ(2) optical microresonators

Owing to the discrete frequency spectrum of whispering gallery resonators (WGRs), the resonance and phase-matching conditions for the interacting waves in the case of second-harmonic generation (SHG) cannot generally be fulfilled simultaneously. To account for this, we develop a model describing SHG in WGRs with non-zero frequency detunings at both the pump and second-harmonic frequencies. Our model predicts strong distortions of the line shape of pump and second-harmonic resonances for similar linewidths at both frequencies; for much larger linewidths at the second-harmonic frequency, this behavior is absent. Furthermore, it describes the SHG efficiency as a function of detuning. Experimentally, one can change the WGR eigenfrequencies, and thus the relative detuning between pump and second-harmonic waves by a number of means, for example electro-optically and thermally. Using a lithium niobate WGR, we show an excellent quantitative agreement for the SHG efficiency between our experimental results and the model. Also, we show the predicted distortions of the pump and second-harmonic resonances to be absent in the lithium niobate WGR but present in a cadmium silicon phosphide WGR, as expected from the linewidths of the resonances involved.

Infrared Comb Spectroscopy of Buffer-Gas-Cooled Molecules: Toward Absolute Frequency Metrology of Cold Acetylene

We review the recent developments in precision ro-vibrational spectroscopy of buffer-gas-cooled neutral molecules, obtained using infrared frequency combs either as direct probe sources or as ultra-accurate optical rulers. In particular, we show how coherent broadband spectroscopy of complex molecules especially benefits from drastic simplification of the spectra brought about by cooling of internal temperatures. Moreover, cooling the translational motion allows longer light-molecule interaction times and hence reduced transit-time broadening effects, crucial for high-precision spectroscopy on simple molecules. In this respect, we report on the progress of absolute frequency metrology experiments with buffer-gas-cooled molecules, focusing on the advanced technologies that led to record measurements with acetylene. Finally, we briefly discuss the prospects for further improving the ultimate accuracy of the spectroscopic frequency measurement.

Localized structures formed through domain wall locking in cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation

We analyze the formation of localized structures in cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation. We focus on the phase-matched limit, and consider that fundamental and generated waves have opposite signs of group velocity dispersion. We show that these states form due to the locking of domain walls connecting two stable homogeneous states of the system, and undergo collapsed snaking. We study the impact of temporal walk-off on the stability and dynamics of these localized states.

Exploiting optical nonlinearities for group delay dispersion compensation in femtosecond optical parametric oscillators

A wavelength tunable femtosecond optical parametric oscillator pumped by the second harmonic of a Yb: KGW solid state oscillator was investigated. The intracavity group delay dispersion was positive, and soliton condition was satisfied by introducing negative nonlinearity from cascaded quadratic nonlinearity (CQN). Two different approaches were investigated - CQN induced by the same amplifying nonlinear crystal or CQN induced by an additional second harmonic generating nonlinear crystal inside the same resonator. The second crystal was shown to correct the resonator misalignment induced by the rotation of the amplifying crystal as the wavelength was tuned in the range of 770-970 nm. It simultaneously compensated positive resonator GDD offsets of +/- 1000 fs² with +/- 5% SHG power losses, simulating a method for compensation of GDD ripples in a broadband mirror.
