Dual-Tunable Broadband Terahertz Absorber Based on a Hybrid Graphene-Dirac Semimetal Structure

Wave-thermal effect of a temperature-tunable terahertz absorber

Heat-sensitive materials have great applications in sensor, detector, and tunable photoelectric devices. However, the wave-thermal effect of the heat-sensitive material is rarely been investigated in the THz range. Here, we propose the incorporation of heat-sensitive material (strontium titanate (STO)) within a THz absorber. The simulated results show that the absorptance and frequency can be dynamically controlled by the temperature of STO. Because the absorbed THz waves are finally converted into heat, then we research the theoretical mechanism of heat generation. Theoretical analysis shows that there are two reasons for the temperature rise: surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and ohmic loss of gold patch; Electromagnetic energy consumption inside the loss materials. To verify the theory, finally, we use COMSOL Multiphysics to research the nanosecond wave-thermal effect. The transient temperature of the wave-thermal effect is calculated quantitatively. The quantitative prediction of temperature variation can provide good guidance for thermal regulation and wave-thermally tunable THz devices.

Monolayer-Graphene-Based Tunable Absorber in the Near-Infrared

In this paper, a tunable absorber composed of asymmetric grating based on a graphene-dielectric-metal structure is proposed. The absorption of the absorber can be modified from 99.99% to 61.73% in the near-infrared by varying the Fermi energy of graphene, and the absorption wavelength can be tuned by varying the grating period. Furthermore, the influence of other geometrical parameters, the incident angle, and polarization are analyzed in detail by a finite-difference time-domain simulation. The graphene absorbers proposed in this paper have potential applications in the fields of stealth, sense, and photoelectric conversion. When the absorber that we propose is used as a gas sensor, the sensitivity of 200 nm/RIU with FOM can reach up to 159 RIU-1.

Dual-Frequency Polarized Reconfigurable Terahertz Antenna Based on Graphene Metasurface and TOPAS

A hybrid dual-frequency polarized reconfigurable terahertz antenna is designed and studied. Graphene and TOPAS are employed as the polarization conversion metasurface and dielectric substrate, respectively, enabling tunable polarization conversion and circular polarization. TOPAS is a good substrate material for broadband THz components due to its low absorption. By adjusting the chemical potential of graphene between 0 eV and 0.5 eV, the polarization state in the band of 1 THz (0.76-1.02 THz) and 2.5 THz (2.43-2.6 THz) can be reconstructed. Thanks to the multilayer graphene structure and low absorption TOPAS, the graphene metasurface exhibits a broad bandwidth of 0.26 and 0.17 THz, respectively, in the band of 1 THz and 2.5 THz. The working state of the circularly polarized antenna and linearly polarized antenna can be switched in the bands around 1 THz (0.7-0.75 THz, 0.96-1.04 THz) and 2.5 THz (2.42-2.52 THz), respectively, without changing the physical geometry. Moreover, the graphene antenna, metasurface, and hybrid structure are tested, respectively, to verify that the components do not interfere with each other in performance. The hybrid antenna shows great potential in tunable terahertz devices and related applications.
