A Novel Micromixer That Exploits Electrokinetic Vortices Generated on a Janus Droplet Surface

Micromixers play a crucial role as essential components in microfluidic analysis systems. This paper introduces a novel micromixer designed by harnessing electrokinetic vortices arising on the surface of a Janus droplet within a microchannel. The Janus droplet is characterized by different polarities of charges on its two sides (upstream part and downstream part). In the presence of a direct current electric field, the droplet's surface generates electroosmotic flows in opposite directions, resulting in the formation of vortices and facilitating solution mixing. Results from numerical simulations suggest that a better mixing performance of the micromixer is associated with both a higher absolute value of the zeta potential ratio between the downstream and upstream surfaces of the Janus droplet and a larger downstream surface area. Additionally, this study reveals that microchannel dimensions significantly influence the performance of the micromixer. Smaller microchannel widths and heights correspond to a larger mixing index for the micromixer. The micromixer presented in this study features a simple structure, easy fabrication, and holds promising application potential.

A SAR Micromixer for Water-Water Mixing: Design, Optimization, and Analysis

A numerical investigation of the mixing performance and fluid flow in a new split and recombine (SAR) Y−Uβ micromixer is presented in this work. A parameter called connecting angle βis varied from 0° to 90° to analyze the effect on the SAR process and mixing performance. Thenumerical data shows that the SAR process strongly depends on the connecting angle (β) and maximum efficiency (93%) can be achieved when the value of β is 45°. The Y−U45° the mixer also offers higher efficiency and lower pressure drop than a known SAR ‘H−C’ mixer irrespective of Reynolds numbers. The split and recombine process, the influence of secondary flow, and pressure drop characteristics at various Reynolds numbers are also studied. In addition, mixing effectiveness is also computed, and among all examined mixers, Y−U45° is by far the best performing one.

Kinematic Measurements of Novel Chaotic Micromixers to Enhance Mixing Performances at Low Reynolds Numbers: Comparative Study

In this work, a comparative investigation of chaotic flow behavior inside multi-layer crossing channels was numerically carried out to select suitable micromixers. New micromixers were proposed and compared with an efficient passive mixer called a Two-Layer Crossing Channel Micromixer (TLCCM), which was investigated recently. The computational evaluation was a concern to the mixing enhancement and kinematic measurements, such as vorticity, deformation, stretching, and folding rates for various low Reynolds number regimes. The 3D continuity, momentum, and species transport equations were solved by a Fluent ANSYS CFD code. For various cases of fluid regimes (0.1 to 25 values of Reynolds number), the new configuration displayed a mixing enhancement of 40%–60% relative to that obtained in the older TLCCM in terms of kinematic measurement, which was studied recently. The results revealed that all proposed micromixers have a strong secondary flow, which significantly enhances the fluid kinematic performances at low Reynolds numbers. The visualization of mass fraction and path-lines presents that the TLCCM configuration is inefficient at low Reynolds numbers, while the new designs exhibit rapid mixing with lower pressure losses. Thus, it can be used to enhance the homogenization in several microfluidic systems.
