Reliability of Neural Implants-Effective Method for Cleaning and Surface Preparation of Ceramics

A Multielectrode Nerve Cuff for Chronic Velocity Selective Recording in a sheep model

Supra-sacral spinal cord injury (SCI) causes loss of bladder fullness sensation and bladder over-activity, leading to retention and incontinence respectively. Velocity selective recording (VSR) of nerve roots innervating the bladder might enable identification of bladder activity. A 10-electrode nerve cuff for sacral nerve root VSR was developed and tested in a sheep model during acute surgeries and chronic implantation for 6 months. The cuff performed well, with 5.90±1.90 kΩ electrode, and <~800 Ω tissue impedance after 189 days implantation with a stable device and tissues. This is important information for assessing the feasibility of chronic VSR.Clinical Relevance-This demonstrates the manufacturing and performance of a neural interface for chronic monitoring of bladder nerve afferents with applications in urinary incontinence and retention management following SCI.

A Novel Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) Reactor with Streamer and Glow Corona Discharge for Improved Ozone Generation at Atmospheric Pressure

Discharge mode is an important parameter for ozone synthesis by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). Currently, it is still challenging to stably generate glow discharge with oxygen at atmospheric pressure. In this paper, a DBD reactor with a layer of silver placed between the electrode and the dielectric layer (SL-DBD) was developed. Experimental results show that both streamer and glow corona discharge were stably generated under sinusoidal excitation with a 0.5 mm discharge gap in a parallel-plate DBD, due to the increased electric field strength in the discharge gap by the silver layer. It was also found that, in the SL-DBD reactor, glow corona discharge enhances the discharge strength by 50 times. The spectral peak of O at 777 nm in SL-DBD is increased to 28,800, compared with 18,389 in a reactor with a streamer only. The SL-DBD reactor produces ozone with a concentration of as high as 150 g/m³ and shows good stability in an 8 h durability test.

New Possibilities for Testing the Service Life of Magnetic Contacts

Magnetic contacts we could define as a switching device used in transport structures such as a tunnel, to which the manufacturer prescribes a certain number of closures within its lifetime, during which they should operate flawlessly. Verification of the data provided by the manufacturer is time-consuming and physically demanding due to the data being large in number. For this reason, we developed a test device using torque in the research of magnetic contacts, which greatly automates the whole process and thus eliminates human error. The test device can use internal memory to calculate the number of closures of magnetic contacts and then transmit the digitized data. The test device is registered as an industrial utility model and can be used to test any magnetic contacts.
