Microplastics in aquatic systems: An in-depth review of current and potential water treatment processes

Plastic products, despite their undeniable utility in modern life, pose significant environmental challenges, particularly when it comes to recycling. A crucial concern is the pervasive introduction of microplastics (MPs) into aquatic ecosystems, with deleterious effects on marine organisms. This review presents a detailed examination of the methodologies developed for MPs removal in water treatment systems. Initially, investigating the most common types of MPs in wastewater, subsequently presenting methodologies for their precise identification and quantification in aquatic environments. Instruments such as scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and Raman tweezers stand out as powerful tools for studying MPs. The discussion then transitions to the exploration of both existing and emergent techniques for MPs removal in wastewater treatment plants and drinking water treatment plants. This includes a description of the core mechanisms that drive these techniques, with an emphasis on the latest research developments in MPs degradation. Present MPs removal methodologies, ranging from physical separation to chemical and biological adsorption and degradation, offer varied advantages and constraints. Addressing the MPs contamination problem in its entirety remains a significant challenge. In conclusion, the review offers a succinct overview of each technique and forwards recommendations for future research, highlighting the pressing nature of this environmental dilemma.

Bridging the gap: harnessing liquid nanomachine know-how for tackling harmful airborne particulates

The emergence of "nanomotors", "nanomachines", and "nanorobotics" has transformed dynamic nanoparticle research, driving a transition from passive to active and intelligent nanoscale systems. This review examines two critical fields: the investigation of airborne particles, significant contributors to air pollution, and the rapidly emerging domain of catalytic and field-controlled nano- and micromotors. We examine the basic concepts of nano- and micromachines in motion and envision their possible use in a gaseous medium to trap and neutralize hazardous particulates. While past studies described the application of nanotechnology and nanomotors in various scenarios, airborne nano/micromachine motion and their control have yet to be thoroughly explored. This review intends to promote multidisciplinary research on nanomachines' propulsion and task-oriented applications, highlighting their relevance in obtaining a cleaner atmospheric environment, a critical component to consider for human health.

Armoring a liposome-integrated tissue factor with sacrificial CaCO3 to form potent self-propelled hemostats

The development of hemostatic materials suitable for diverse emergency scenarios is of paramount significance, and there is growing interest in wound-site delivery of hemostasis-enhancing agents that can leverage the body's inherent mechanisms. Herein we report the design and performance of a biomimetic nanoparticle system enclosing tissue factor (TF), the most potent known blood coagulation trigger, which was reconstituted into liposomes and shielded by the liposome-templated CaCO₃ mineralization. The mineral coatings, which mainly comprised water-soluble amorphous and vateritic phases, synergized with the lipidated TF to improve blood coagulation in vitro. These coatings served as sacrificial masks capable of releasing Ca²⁺ coagulation factors or propelling the TF-liposomes via acid-aided generation of CO₂ bubbles while endowing them with high thermostability under dry conditions. In comparison to commercially available hemostatic particles, CaCO₃ mineralized TF-liposomes yielded significantly shorter hemostasis times and less blood loss in vivo. When mixed with organic acids, the CO₂-generating formulation further improved hemostasis by delivering TF-liposomes deep into actively bleeding wounds with good biocompatibility, as observed in a rat hepatic injury model. Therefore, the designed composite mimicry of coagulatory components exhibited strong hemostatic efficacy, which in combination with the propulsion mechanism would serve as a versatile approach to treating a variety of severe hemorrhages.

Acoustic Propulsion of Nano- and Microcones: Dependence on the Viscosity of the Surrounding Fluid

This article investigates how the acoustic propulsion of cone-shaped colloidal particles that are exposed to a traveling ultrasound wave depends on the viscosity of the fluid surrounding the particles. Using acoustofluidic computer simulations, we found that the propulsion of such nano- and microcones decreases strongly and even changes sign for increasing shear viscosity. In contrast, we found only a weak dependence of the propulsion on the bulk viscosity. The obtained results are in line with the findings of previous theoretical and experimental studies.

Static and Free Vibration Analyses of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT)–Substrate Medium Systems

This paper proposes a novel nanobar–substrate medium model for static and free vibration analyses of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) systems embedded in the elastic substrate medium. The modified strain-gradient elasticity theory is utilized to account for the material small-scale effect, while the Gurtin–Murdoch surface theory is employed to represent the surface energy effect. The Winkler foundation model is assigned to consider the interactive mechanism between the nanobar and its surrounding substrate medium. Hamilton’s principle is used to consistently derive the system governing equation, initial conditions, and classical as well as non-classical boundary conditions. Two numerical simulations are employed to demonstrate the essence of the material small-scale effect, the surface energy effect, and the surrounding substrate medium on static and free vibration responses of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)–substrate medium systems. The simulation results show that the material small-scale effect, the surface energy effect, and the interaction between the substrate and the structure led to a system-stiffness enhancement both in static and free vibration analyses.

Surface Roughening of Pt-Polystyrene Spherical Janus Micromotors for Enhanced Motion Speed

Spherical Janus micromotors (SJMs) have attracted much attention, and their high-speed motion is highly desired due to their various potential applications. However, the conventional template-deposition method often leads to an active Pt coating with a smooth surface, which is unbeneficial to speed enhancement in terms of catalytic reaction. Here, a facile surface roughening method is presented to fabricate the Pt-polystyrene (PS) SJMs with rough Pt surface (or Pt_r-PS SJMs) by plasma-etching the PS colloidal monolayer and then depositing Pt. The Pt_r-PS SJMs can exhibit directional motion pushed by the Pt in the various H₂O₂ solutions, and they show much higher motion speeds than the Pt-PS SJMs with smooth Pt surfaces at the same H₂O₂ concentration. The Pt-pushed motion is related to the locally asymmetric catalytic reaction of the Pt coating on PS. The speed is also associated with the surface roughness of the Pt coating. The Pt film with a rough surface causes enhanced motion speed due to the improvement of reaction catalytic activity. This work presents a new route to enhancing the motor motion speed, which is of significance in designing micromotors with high-speed motion.

Nano/Microrobots Line Up for Gastrointestinal Tract Diseases: Targeted Delivery, Therapy, and Prevention

Nano/microrobots (NMRs) are tiny devices that can convert energy into motion and operate at nano/microscales.54 Especially in biomedical research, NMRs have received much attention over the past twenty years because of their excellent capabilities and great potential in various applications, including on-demand drug delivery, gene and cell transport, and precise microsurgery. Reports published in recent years show that synthetic nano/microrobots have promising potential to function in the gastrointestinal (GI) region, particularly in terms of drug delivery. These tiny robots were able to be designed in such a way that they propel in their surroundings (biological media) with high speed, load cargo (drug) efficiently, transport it safely, and release upon request successfully. Their propulsion, retention, distribution, and toxicity in the GI tract of mice has been evaluated. The results envisage that such nano/microrobots can be further modified and developed as a new-generation treatment of GI tract diseases. In this minireview, we focus on the functionality of micro/nanorobots as a biomedical treatment system for stomach/intestinal diseases. We review the research progress from the first in vivo report in December 2014 to the latest in August 2021. Then, we discuss the treatment difficulties and challenges in vivo application (in general) and possible future development routes.
