Molecular Machines and Microrobots: Nanoarchitectonics Developments and On-Water Performances

Molecular machines working at interfaces: physics, chemistry, evolution and nanoarchitectonics

As a post-nanotechnology concept, nanoarchitectonics combines nanotechnology with advanced materials science. Molecular machines made by assembling molecular units and their organizational bodies are also products of nanoarchitectonics. They can be regarded as the smallest functional materials. Originally, studies on molecular machines analyzed the average properties of objects dispersed in solution by spectroscopic methods. Researchers' playgrounds partially shifted to solid interfaces, because high-resolution observation of molecular machines is usually done on solid interfaces under high vacuum and cryogenic conditions. Additionally, to ensure the practical applicability of molecular machines, operation under ambient conditions is necessary. The latter conditions are met in dynamic interfacial environments such as the surface of water at room temperature. According to these backgrounds, this review summarizes the trends of molecular machines that continue to evolve under the concept of nanoarchitectonics in interfacial environments. Some recent examples of molecular machines in solution are briefly introduced first, which is followed by an overview of studies of molecular machines and similar supramolecular structures in various interfacial environments. The interfacial environments are classified into (i) solid interfaces, (ii) liquid interfaces, and (iii) various material and biological interfaces. Molecular machines are expanding their activities from the static environment of a solid interface to the more dynamic environment of a liquid interface. Molecular machines change their field of activity while maintaining their basic functions and induce the accumulation of individual molecular machines into macroscopic physical properties molecular machines through macroscopic mechanical motions can be employed to control molecular machines. Moreover, research on molecular machines is not limited to solid and liquid interfaces; interfaces with living organisms are also crucial.

Few- and single-molecule reservoir computing experimentally demonstrated with surface-enhanced Raman scattering and ion gating

Molecule-based reservoir computing (RC) is promising for achieving low power consumption neuromorphic computing, although the information-processing capability of small numbers of molecules is not clear. Here, we report a few- and single-molecule RC that uses the molecular vibration dynamics in the para-mercaptobenzoic acid (pMBA) detected by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with tungsten oxide nanorod/silver nanoparticles. The Raman signals of the pMBA molecules, adsorbed at the SERS active site of the nanorod, were reversibly perturbated by the application of voltage-induced local pH changes near the molecules, and then used to perform time-series analysis tasks. Despite the small number of molecules used, our system achieved good performance, including >95% accuracy in various nonlinear waveform transformations, 94.3% accuracy in solving a second-order nonlinear dynamic system, and a prediction error of 25.0 milligrams per deciliter in a 15-minute-ahead blood glucose level prediction. Our work provides a concept of few-molecular computing with practical computation capabilities.

Materials Nanoarchitectonics at Dynamic Interfaces: Structure Formation and Functional Manipulation

The next step in nanotechnology is to establish a methodology to assemble new functional materials based on the knowledge of nanotechnology. This task is undertaken by nanoarchitectonics. In nanoarchitectonics, we architect functional material systems from nanounits such as atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials. In terms of the hierarchy of the structure and the harmonization of the function, the material created by nanoarchitectonics has similar characteristics to the organization of the functional structure in biosystems. Looking at actual biofunctional systems, dynamic properties and interfacial environments are key. In other words, nanoarchitectonics at dynamic interfaces is important for the production of bio-like highly functional materials systems. In this review paper, nanoarchitectonics at dynamic interfaces will be discussed, looking at recent typical examples. In particular, the basic topics of "molecular manipulation, arrangement, and assembly" and "material production" will be discussed in the first two sections. Then, in the following section, "fullerene assembly: from zero-dimensional unit to advanced materials", we will discuss how various functional structures can be created from the very basic nanounit, the fullerene. The above examples demonstrate the versatile possibilities of architectonics at dynamic interfaces. In the last section, these tendencies will be summarized, and future directions will be discussed.

Redox-based ion-gating reservoir consisting of (104) oriented LiCoO2 film, assisted by physical masking

Reservoir computing (RC) is a machine learning framework suitable for processing time series data, and is a computationally inexpensive and fast learning model. A physical reservoir is a hardware implementation of RC using a physical system, which is expected to become the social infrastructure of a data society that needs to process vast amounts of information. Ion-gating reservoirs (IGR) are compact and suitable for integration with various physical reservoirs, but the prediction accuracy and operating speed of redox-IGRs using WO3 as the channel are not sufficient due to irreversible Li+ trapping in the WO3 matrix during operation. Here, in order to enhance the computation performance of redox-IGRs, we developed a redox-based IGR using a (104) oriented LiCoO2 thin film with high electronic and ionic conductivity as a trap-free channel material. The subject IGR utilizes resistance change that is due to a redox reaction (LiCoO2 ⟺ Li1-xCoO2 + xLi+ + xe-) with the insertion and desertion of Li+. The prediction error in the subject IGR was reduced by 72% and the operation speed was increased by 4 times compared to the previously reported WO3, which changes are due to the nonlinear and reversible electrical response of LiCoO2 and the high dimensionality enhanced by a newly developed physical masking technique. This study has demonstrated the possibility of developing high-performance IGRs by utilizing materials with stronger nonlinearity and by increasing output dimensionality.

Controlling the Redox Catalytic Activity of a Cyclic Selenide Fused to 18-Crown-6 by the Conformational Transition Induced by Coordination to an Alkali Metal Ion

trans-3,4-Dihydroxyselenolane (DHS), a water-soluble cyclic selenide, exhibits selenoenzyme-like unique redox activities through reversible oxidation to the corresponding selenoxide. Previously, we demonstrated that DHS can be applied as an antioxidant against lipid peroxidation and a radioprotector by means of adequate modifications of the two hydroxy (OH) groups. Herein, we synthesized new DHS derivatives with a crown-ether ring fused to the OH groups (DHS-crown-n (n = 4 to 7), 1-4) and investigated their behaviors of complex formation with various alkali metal salts. According to the X-ray structure analysis, it was found that the two oxygen atoms of DHS change the directions from diaxial to diequatorial by complexation. The similar conformational transition was also observed in solution NMR experiments. The ¹H NMR titration in CD₃OD further confirmed that DHS-crown-6 (3) forms stable 1:1 complexes with KI, RbCl and CsCl, while it forms a 2:1 complex with KBPh₄. The results suggested that the 1:1 complex (3·MX) exchanges the metal ion with metal-free 3 through the formation of the 2:1 complex. The redox catalytic activity of 3 was evaluated using a selenoenzyme model reaction between H₂O₂ and dithiothreitol. The activity was significantly reduced in the presence of KCl due to the complex formation. Thus, the redox catalytic activity of DHS could be controlled by the conformational transition induced by coordination to an alkali metal ion.
