Abstract
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (e.g., Rhizophagus species) recruit specific bacterial species in their hyphosphere. However, the chemical interplay and the mutual benefit of this intricate partnership have not been investigated yet, especially as it involves bacteria known as strong producers of antifungal compounds such as Bacillus velezensis. Here, we show that the soil-dwelling B. velezensis migrates along the hyphal network of the AM fungus R. irregularis, forming biofilms and inducing cytoplasmic flow in the AM fungus that contributes to host plant root colonization by the bacterium. During hyphosphere colonization, R. irregularis modulates the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites in B. velezensis to ensure stable coexistence and as a mechanism to ward off mycoparasitic fungi and bacteria. These mutual benefits are extended into a tripartite context via the provision of enhanced protection to the host plant through the induction of systemic resistance.

Abstract
Bacillus subtilis is an important probiotic microorganism that secretes a variety of antimicrobial compounds, including lipopeptides, which are a class of small molecule peptides with important application value in the fields of feed additives, food, biopesticides, biofertilizers, medicine and the biological control of plant diseases. In this study, we isolated a novel B. subtilis HF1 strain that is rich in lipopeptide components and homologs, has a strong antagonistic effect on a variety of plant fungi, and is highly efficient in promoting the growth of broilers. The live B. subtilis HF1 and its fermentation broth without cells showed significant inhibitory effects on 20 species of plant fungi. The crude extracts of lipopeptides in the fermentation supernatant of B. subtilis HF1 were obtained by combining acid precipitation and methanol extraction, and the lipopeptide compositions were analyzed by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). The results showed that HF1 could produce 11 homologs of surfactin and 13 homologs of fengycin. Among the fengycin homologs, C13-C19 fengycin A and C15-C17 fengycin B were identified; among the surfactin homologs, C11-C17 surfactin A and C13-C16 surfactin B were characterized. C13 fengycin A, C11 surfactin A and C17 surfactin A were reported for the first time, and their functions are worthy of further study. In addition, we found that HF1 fermentation broth with and without live cells could be used as a feed additive to promote the growth of broilers by significantly increasing body weight up to 15.84%. HF1 could be a prospective strain for developing a biocontrol agent for plant fungal diseases and an efficient feed additive for green agriculture.

Abstract
Increasing evidence shows that microbial synthesis plays an important role in producing high value-added products. However, microbial monoculture generally hampers metabolites production and limits scalability due to the increased metabolic burden on the host strain. In contrast, co-culture is a more flexible approach to improve the environmental adaptability and reduce the overall metabolic burden. The well-defined co-culturing microbial consortia can tap their metabolic potential to obtain yet-to-be discovered and pre-existing metabolites. This review focuses on the use of a co-culture strategy and its underlying mechanisms to enhance the production of products. Notably, the significance of comprehending the microbial interactions, diverse communication modes, genetic information, and modular co-culture involved in co-culture systems were highlighted. Furthermore, it addresses the current challenges and outlines potential future directions for microbial co-culture. This review provides better understanding the diversity and complexity of the interesting interaction and communication to advance the development of co-culture techniques.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Microbial communities affect several aspects of the earth's ecosystem through their metabolic interaction. The dynamics of this interaction emerge from complex multilevel networks of crosstalk. Elucidation of this interaction could help us to maintain the balance for a sustainable future. OBJECTIVES To investigate the chemical language among highly abundant microbial genera in the rhizospheres of medicinal plants based on the metabolomic analysis at the interaction level. METHODS Coculturing experiments involving three microbial species: Aspergillus (A), Trichoderma (T), and Bacillus (B), representing fungi (A, T) and bacteria (B), respectively. These experiments encompassed various interaction levels, including dual cultures (AB, AT, TB) and triple cultures (ATB). Metabolic profiling by LC-QTOFMS revealed the effect of interaction level on the productivity and diversity of microbial specialized metabolites. RESULTS The ATB interaction had the richest profile, while the bacterial profile in the monoculture condition had the lowest. Two native compounds of the Aspergillus genus, aspergillic acid and the dipeptide asperopiperazine B, exhibited decreased levels in the presence of the AT interaction and were undetectable in the presence of bacteria during the interaction. Trichodermarin N and Trichodermatide D isolated from Trichoderma species exclusively detected during coexistence with bacteria (TB and ATB). These findings indicate that the presence of Bacillus activates cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters in Trichoderma. The antibacterial activity of mixed culture extracts was stronger than that of the monoculture extracts. The TB extract exhibited strong antifungal activity compared to the monoculture extract and other mixed culture treatments. CONCLUSION The elucidation of medicinal plant microbiome interaction chemistry and its effect on the environment will also be of great interest in the context of medicinal plant health Additionally, it sheds light on the content of bioactive constituents, and facilitating the discovery of novel antimicrobials.

Abstract
Fengycin has great potential for applications in biological control because of its biosafety and degradability. In this study, the addition of exogenous precursors increased fengycin production by Bacillus subtilis. Corynebacterium glutamicum was engineered to produce high levels of precursors (Thr, Pro, Val, and Ile) to promote the biosynthesis of fengycin. Furthermore, recombinant C. glutamicum and Yarrowia lipolytica providing amino acid and fatty acid precursors were co-cultured to improve fengycin production by B. subtilis in a three-strain artificial consortium, in which fengycin production was 2100 mg·L-1. In addition, fengycin production by the consortium in a 5 L bioreactor reached 3290 mg·L-1. Fengycin had a significant antifungal effect on Rhizoctonia solani, which illustrates its potential as a food preservative. Taken together, this work provides a new strategy for improving fengycin production by a microbial consortium and metabolic engineering.

Abstract
Fengycin possesses antifungal activity but has limited application due to its low yields. Amino acid precursors play a crucial role in fengycin synthesis. Herein, the overexpression of alanine, isoleucine, and threonine transporter-related genes in Bacillus subtilis increased fengycin production by 34.06%, 46.66%, and 7.83%, respectively. Particularly, fengycin production in B. subtilis reached 871.86 mg/L with the addition of 8.0 g/L exogenous proline after enhancing the expression of the proline transport-related gene opuE. To overcome the metabolic burden caused by excessive enhancement of gene expression for supplying precursors, B. subtilis and Corynebacterium glutamicum which produced proline, were co-cultured, which further improved fengycin production. Fengycin production in the co-culture of B. subtilis and C. glutamicum in shake flasks reached 1554.74 mg/L after optimizing the inoculation time and ratio. The fengycin level in the fed-batch co-culture was 2309.96 mg/L in a 5.0-L bioreactor. These findings provide a new strategy for improving fengycin production.

Abstract
Molecular studies have elucidated Trichoderma's biocontrol mechanisms. Since fungicides have limited use, Trichoderma could control disease by new metabolic routes and epigenetic alterations. Due to environmental and health hazards, agrochemicals have been a concern since they were introduced in agriculture. Trichoderma, a well-known fungal genus with different mechanisms of action, is an alternative to pesticides and a great tool to help minimize disease incidence. Trichoderma-treated plants mainly benefit from disease control and growth promotion through priming, and these fungi can modulate plants' gene expression by boosting their immune system, accelerating their response to threats, and building stress tolerance. The latest studies suggest that epigenetics is required for plant priming and could be essential for growth promotion, expanding the possibilities for producing new resistant plant varieties. Trichoderma's propagules can be mass produced and formulated depending on the delivery method. Microsclerotia-based bioproducts could be a promising way of increasing the reliability and durability of marketed products in the field, as well as help guarantee longer shelf life. Developing novel formulations and selecting efficient Trichoderma strains can be tiresome, but patent search indicates an increase in the industrialization and commercialization of technologies and an expansion of companies' involvement in research and development in this field. Although Trichoderma is considered a well-known fungal genus, it still attracts the attention of large companies, universities, and research institutes around the world.
