Characterization of the Physical, Chemical, and Adsorption Properties of Coal-Fly-Ash–Hydroxyapatite Composites

Biochar supported metallo-inorganic nanocomposite: A green approach for decontamination of heavy metals from water

Heavy metal contamination of water has become a global environmental burden, which has stirred up agitation worldwide. Fabrication of adsorbents utilizing either low cost, environment friendly materials or waste products can be helpful in remediating environmental pollution. The current study evolved around the synthesis of nanocomposites derived from such raw precursors like spent tea waste biochar, hydroxyapatite, and clays. In this context, two nanocomposites, namely manganese ferrite doped hydroxyapatite/kaolinite/biochar (TK-NC) and manganese ferrite doped hydroxyapatite/vermiculite/biochar (TV-NC), were synthesized followed by their employment for decontamination of heavy metals from aqueous media. TK-NC and TV-NC exhibited the crystallite sizes in the range of 2.55-5.94 nm as obtained by Debye Scherrer Equation and Williamsons-Hall equation The fabricated nanocomposites were characterized using FT-IR, SEM-EDX, and powder XRD. Batch adsorption studies were performed, and influence of different adsorption parameters (contact time, reaction temperature, solution pH, adsorbent dose, and initial adsorbate concentration) on metal adsorption was examined. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption of Cr(VI), Ni(II) and Cu(II) on TK-NC and TV-NC was endothermic (+ΔH°) and indicates disorderness (+ΔS°) at the solid-liquid interface owing to the strong affinity of metal ions with adsorbent. The heavy metal uptake selectivity followed the following decreasing order; Cr(VI) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) by both nanocomposites, with adsorption capacities falling in the range of 204.68-343.05 mg g-1. Several adsorption kinetic and isotherm models were applied to experimentally calculated data, which suggest favorable adsorption of Cr(VI), Ni(II) and Cu(II) by TK-NC and TV-NC from the system while obeying general-order kinetics and R-P adsorption model, conferring the transition in adsorption kinetics order and involvement of multiple adsorption process.

A review on the applicability of adsorption techniques for remediation of recalcitrant pesticides

Pesticide has revolutionised the agricultural industry by reducing yield losses and by enhancing productivity. But indiscriminate usage of such chemicals can negatively impact human health and ecosystem balance as certain pesticides can be recalcitrant in nature. Out of some of the suggested sustainable techniques to remove the pesticide load from the environment, adsorption is found to be highly efficient and can also be implemented on a large scale. It has been observed that natural adsorption that takes place after the application of the pesticide is not enough to reduce the pesticide load, hence, adsorbents like activated carbon, plant-based adsorbents, agricultural by-products, silica materials, polymeric adsorbents, metal organic framework etc are being experimented upon. It is becoming increasingly important to choose adsorbents which will not leave any secondary pollutant after treatment and the cost of production of such adsorbent should be feasible. In this review paper, it has been established that certain adsorbent like biochar, hydrochar, resin, metal organic framework etc can efficiently remove pesticides namely chlorpyrifos, diazinon, 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid, atrazine, fipronil, imidacloprid etc. The mechanism of adsorption, thermodynamics and kinetic part have been discussed in detail with respect to the pesticide and adsorbent under discussion. The reason behind choosing an adsorbent for the removal of a particular pesticide have also been explained. It is further highly recommended to carry out a cost analysis before implementing an absorbent because inspite of its efficacy, it might not be cost effective to use it for a particular type of pesticide or contaminant.

Characteristics of the Properties of Absodan Plus Sorbent and Its Ability to Remove Phosphates and Chromates from Aqueous Solutions

The aim of the research was to characterize the parameters of the diatomite sorbent Absodan Plus as well as to assess its suitability for the adsorption of chromates and phosphates from acidic aqueous solutions simulating the conditions occurring in some types of industrial wastewater. The scope of the research includes XRD, SEM, BET, and PZC analyses, and 3D observation of commercial diatomite granules and batch tests to determine the constants of kinetics and the equilibrium of chromates and phosphates adsorption. Absodan Plus is a diatomite commercial material containing an amorphous phase (33%) and is also the crystalline phase of quartz, hematite, and grossite. The material is macro- and mesoporous and its specific surface area is about 30 m²/g. Its PZC is around pH = 5.5–6.0 and in an acidic environment is able to adsorb the anions. The saturation of the adsorbent surface with molecules of the adsorbed substance occurs after 2 h for chromates and 2.5 h for phosphates. The maximum adsorption capacity of Absodan Plus in terms of phosphorus and chromium amounts to 9.46 mg P/g and 39.1 mg Cr/g, respectively. As shown by XRD analysis, Absodan Plus contains an admixture of hematite, which can support the removal of chromium and phosphorus.
