Microscopic Diffusion Characteristics of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates on the Surface of Anthracite: The Influence of Different Attachment Sites of Benzene Ring in the Backbone

Chemical contamination affecting filter-feeding bivalves in no-take marine protected areas from Brazil

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are zones geographically delimited under pre-defined management goals, seeking to reduce anthropogenic threats to biodiversity. Despite this, in recent years reports of MPAs affected by chemical contamination has grown. Therefore, this study addresses this critical issue assessing legacy and current chemical contamination in filter-feeder bivalves obtained in very restrictive no-take MPAs from Brazil. The detected pollutants encompass polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), linear alkylbenzenes (LABs), and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Despite protective measures, bivalves from nine MPAs exhibited high LABs (13.2-1139.0 ng g-1) and DDTs levels (0.1-62.3 ng g-1). PAHs were present in low concentrations (3.1-29.03 ng g-1), as PCBs (0.7-6.4 ng g-1), hexachlorobenzene (0.1-0.2 ng g-1), and Mirex (0.1-0.3 ng g-1). Regardless of the sentinel species, MPAs and management categories, similar accumulation patterns were observed for LABs, DDTs, PAHs, and PCBs. Based on the limits proposed by Oslo Paris Commission, the measured levels of PAHs, PCBs and were below the environmental assessment criteria. Such findings indicate the no biological effects are expected to occur. However, they are higher considering background conditions typically measured in remote or pristine areas and potential simultaneous exposure. Such findings indicate an influence of anthropogenic sources, emphasizing the urgency for monitoring programs guiding strategic management efforts to safeguard these areas.

Molecular Mechanism Study on the Effect of Microstructural Differences of Octylphenol Polyoxyethylene Ether (OPEO) Surfactants on the Wettability of Anthracite

Inhalable coal dust poses a serious threat to coal mining safety, air quality, and the health of miners. Therefore, the development of efficient dust suppressants is crucial for addressing this issue. This study evaluated the ability of three high-surface-active OPEO-type nonionic surfactants (OP4, OP9, and OP13) to improve the wetting properties of anthracite via extensive experiments and a molecular simulation and determined the micro-mechanism of different wetting properties. The surface tension results show that OP4 has the lowest surface tension (27.182 mN/m). Contact angle tests and wetting kinetics models suggest that OP4 exhibits the strongest wetting improvement ability on raw coal with the smallest contact angle (20.1°) and the fastest wetting rate. In addition, FTIR and XPS experimental results also reveal that OP4-treated coal surfaces introduce the most hydrophilic elements and groups. UV spectroscopy testing shows that OP4 has the highest adsorption capacity on the coal surface, reaching 133.45 mg/g. The surfactant is adsorbed on the surface and pores of anthracite, while the strong adsorption ability of OP4 results in the least amount of N₂ adsorption (8.408 cm³/g) but the largest specific surface area (1.673 m²/g). In addition, the filling behavior and aggregation behavior of surfactants on the anthracite coal surface were observed using SEM. The MD simulation results indicate that OPEO reagents with overly long hydrophilic chains would produce spatial effects on the coal surface. Under the influence of the π-π interaction between the hydrophobic benzene ring and the coal surface, OPEO reagents with fewer ethylene oxide quantities are more prone to adsorb onto the coal surface. Therefore, after the adsorption of OP4, both the polarity and the water molecule adhesion ability of the coal surface are greatly enhanced, which helps to suppress dust production. These results provide important references and a foundation for future designs of efficient compound dust suppressant systems.

Adsorption Characteristics of Ionic Surfactants on Anthracite Surface: A Combined Experimental and Modeling Study

Ionic surfactants are widely used in coal dust control in mines, and their adsorption characteristics on the coal surface have a great influence on the coal dust control effect. In this investigation, anionic sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) and cationic octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (STAC) were selected to explore the adsorption characteristics of ionic surfactants on the surface of anthracite. The experimental results show that the adsorption rate and efficiency of STAC on the surface of anthracite are higher than that of SDBS; STAC can form a denser surfactant layer on the surface of anthracite, with a larger adsorption capacity and higher strength. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the adsorption between STAC and the surface of anthracite is tighter, and the distribution at the coal–water interface is more uniform; the surface of anthracite modified by STAC has a stronger binding ability to water molecules.

Influence of the Branched Structure of Polyoxyethylene Units in Nonionic Surfactants on the Wettability of Anthracite: A Combined Modeling and Experimental Study

Coal dust is a significant concern to the safety of coal mine operations. The wettability of coal can be effectively altered by adding surfactants to water. The development of high-efficiency dust suppressants is hampered by a lack of understanding of the microscopic interaction process between coal dust and surfactants. In this investigation, the influence of the branched structure of the polyoxyethylene unit in nonionic surfactants on the wettability of anthracite surfaces was evaluated by combining the modeling study and experimental research. The macromolecular model of Jincheng anthracite with 55 different components (C7730H3916O133N123S25) was constructed. Lauryl polyoxyethylene ether C12(EO)20 and Tween 20 were selected. The simulation results showed that due to the branched structure of polyoxyethylene, the surface of anthracite after adsorption by Tween 20 is more hydrophilic. Further analysis found that the adsorption configuration of Tween 20 is that the hydrophilic head group covers the hydrophobic tail chain, while the adsorption configuration of C12(EO)20 is that the hydrophobic tail chain covers the hydrophilic head group. The network structure formed by Tween 20 is relatively loose, and the surface is rougher. The network structure formed by C12(EO)20 is denser. Water molecules have a higher aggregation degree near Tween 20 and stronger permeability, and more hydrogen bonds are formed. The existence state of carbon and oxygen elements on the surface of modified coal was analyzed by XPS experiment, which confirmed the adsorption structure obtained by molecular simulation.

Computational Study on the Microscopic Adsorption Characteristics of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates with Different Chain Lengths on Anthracite Surface

In order to explore the influence of different lengths of hydrophobic carbon chains on the diffusion characteristics of surfactants on the surface of anthracite, six linear alkyl benzene sulfonates with different hydrophobic carbon chain lengths were selected (mC, m = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18; m represents the numbers of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic carbon chain), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were adopted. Models of surfactant-anthracite, surfactant-graphite layer, and water-surfactant-anthracite were constructed. After analyzing a series of properties such as adsorption energy, diffusion coefficient, radial distribution function (RDF), and hydrophobic tail order parameters, it was found that 12C had the highest adsorption strength on the surface of anthracite; the reason was that 12C had the highest degree of aggregation near the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of anthracite. Further studies had found that the hydrophobic tail chain of 12C had the strongest isotropy. The study fills the gap in the systematic study of the diffusion characteristics of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) with different chain lengths on the surface of anthracite, enriches and develops the basic theory of coal wettability, and also provides technical ideas for the design of new surfactants and new dust suppression agents.

Study on Adsorption Characteristics of Sulfonate Gemini Surfactant on Lignite Surface

In order to explore the adsorption characteristics of sulfonate gemini surfactants on the surface of lignite, the molecular dynamics simulation method was used, and A kind of sulfonic acid bis sodium salt (S2) and the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were selected. A binary model of surfactant/lignite adsorption system and a ternary model of water/surfactant/lignite system were constructed, and a series of properties such as adsorption configuration, interaction energy, order parameters, relative concentration distribution, number of hydrogen bonds, etc., were analyzed. The results showed that the adsorption strength of S2 on the surface of lignite was higher than that of SDS. The results indicated that the large-angle molecular chain in S2 tended to become smaller, the small-angle molecular chain tended to become larger, and the angle between the molecular chains and the Z axis tended to be concentrated, making the formed network structure denser during the adsorption process. The number of hydrogen bonds in the water-coal system was 42, and the number of hydrogen bonds in the system after S2 adsorption was 15, which was much lower than the 23 hydrogen bonds in the system after SDS adsorption, and S2 could better adsorb and wrap the oxygen-containing groups on the surface of the lignite. The comparative study of the adsorption characteristics of the two surfactants on the surface of lignite can help us better understand the influence of the surfactant structure on the adsorption strength. The research results have important theoretical and practical significance for developing new surfactants, and enriching and developing the basic theory of coal wettability.
