Effect of Dissolved Silica on Immobilization of Boron by Magnesium Oxide

The corrosion behavior of borosilicate glass in the presence of cementitious waste forms

Borosilicate glasses are widely used for radioactive waste disposal due to their ability to incorporate a variety of contaminants and radionuclides while exhibiting high durability in various disposal scenarios. This research evaluated the dissolution of borosilicate glass using both single-pass-flow-through (ASTM C1662-18) and product consistency test (ASTM C1285-21) methods with different solutions, including a cementitious-contacted water (called grout-contacted, GC, from this point) and solutions with varying levels of dissolved cementitious species such as Si, Ca, Al. The results indicated that the presence of Ca plays a crucial role in suppressing glass corrosion, as evidenced by the slower normalized dissolution rates, which were one order of magnitude lower for boron and two orders of magnitude lower for rhenium, observed in both Ca-amended and GC solutions compared to the pH 12 buffer solution. This effect is attributed to the formation of a dense, low-porosity, and strongly bonded calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) layer on the glass surface, which implies that a glass corrosion process is influenced by ion exchange involving alkali ions Na+, K+, Ca2+, and hydrogen-containing species. A small number of glass particles treated in the GC solution showed minor corrosion pits in the form of shallow craters with an average diameter of approximately 500 μm. This observation is correlated with a significant reduction, 2000 to 3000 times lower, in the cumulative volume of glass pores, indicating that smaller pore voids were "sealed" in the presence of Ca2+ ions, likely attributed to the formation of CSH precipitation or other corrosion products such as calcium carbonate saturated from the grout solution. These findings suggest that the presence of dissolved Ca in the GC solution can slow down the dissolution of borosilicate glass, contrary to the expected trend of higher dissolution rates resulting from exposure to high alkaline and thus higher pH solutions.

Silicon Differently Affects Apoplastic Binding of Excess Boron in Wheat and Sunflower Leaves

Monocots and dicots differ in their boron (B) requirement, but also in their capacity to accumulate silicon (Si). Although an ameliorative effect of Si on B toxicity has been reported in various crops, differences among monocots and dicots are not clear, in particular in light of their ability to retain B in the leaf apoplast. In hydroponic experiments under controlled conditions, we studied the role of Si in the compartmentation of B within the leaves of wheat (Triticum vulgare L.) as a model of a high-Si monocot and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) as a model of a low-Si dicot, with the focus on the leaf apoplast. The stable isotopes ¹⁰B and ¹¹B were used to investigate the dynamics of cell wall B binding capacity. In both crops, the application of Si did not affect B concentration in the root, but significantly decreased the B concentration in the leaves. However, the application of Si differently influenced the binding capacity of the leaf apoplast for excess B in wheat and sunflower. In wheat, whose capacity to retain B in the leaf cell walls is lower than in sunflower, the continuous supply of Si is crucial for an enhancement of high B tolerance in the shoot. On the other hand, the supply of Si did not contribute significantly in the extension of the B binding sites in sunflower leaves.

Relationships Among Arsenic-Related Traits, Including Rice Grain Arsenic Concentration and Straighthead Resistance, as Revealed by Genome-Wide Association

There is global concern that rice grains and foods can contain harmful amounts of arsenic (As), motivating breeders to produce cultivars that restrict As accumulation in grains to protect human health. Arsenic is also toxic to plants, with straighthead disorder (StHD), causing panicle sterility, being observed in rice. The genetic variation in StHD resistance suggests that plants have evolved mechanisms that reduce As toxicity, possibly via regulation of As uptake, transport, or detoxification/sequestration. Because these mechanisms could also underlie the wide (3- to 100-fold) differences in grain As concentration (grain-As) observed among diverse rice genotypes, it was hypothesized that some genes reduce both grain-As content and StHD susceptibility and may be detectable as co-located StDH and As quantitative trait loci (QTL). We used a machine-learning Bayesian network approach plus high-resolution genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify QTL for grain-As and StHD resistance within the USDA Rice Minicore Collection (RMC). Arsenic enters roots through phosphorus (P) and silica (Si) transporters, As detoxification involves sulfur (S), and cell signaling to activate stress tolerance mechanisms is impacted by Si, calcium (Ca), and copper (Cu). Therefore, concentrations of Si, P, S, Ca, and Cu were included in this study to elucidate physiological mechanisms underlying grain-As and StHD QTL. Multiple QTL (from 9 to 33) were identified for each of the investigated As-associated traits. Although the QTL for StHD, Si, and grain-As did not overlap as heavily as our hypothesis predicted (4/33 StHD and 4/15 As QTL co-located), they do provide useful guidance to future research. Furthermore, these are the first StHD and Si QTL to be identified using high-density mapping, resulting in their being mapped to shorter, more precise genomic regions than previously reported QTL. The candidate genes identified provide guidance for future research, such as gene editing or mutation studies to further investigate the role of antioxidants and ROS scavenging to StHD resistance, as indicated by candidate genes around the commonly reported qStHD8-2 QTL. Other genes indicated for future study for improving grain-As and StHD include several multidrug and toxic compound extrusion (MATE) genes, F-box genes, and NIPs not documented to date to transport As.

Beneficial Effect of Root or Foliar Silicon Applied to Cucumber Plants under Different Zinc Nutritional Statuses

Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient involved in a large variety of physiological processes, and its deficiency causes mainly growth and development disturbances, as well as oxidative stress, which results in the overproduction and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). A possible environmentally friendly solution is the application of silicon (Si), an element that has shown beneficial effects under abiotic and biotic stresses on many crops. Si could be applied through the roots or leaves. The aim of this work is to study the effect of Si applied to the root or shoot in cucumber plants under different Zn statuses (sufficiency, deficiency, and re-fertilization). Cucumber plants were grown in hydroponics, with 1.5 mM Si applied at the nutrient solution or sprayed on the leaves. During the different Zn statuses, SPAD index, fresh weight, ROS, and Si, Zn, P, Cu and B mineral concentration were determined. The results suggested that Si application had no effect during sufficiency and deficiency periods, however, during re-fertilization foliar application of Si, it showed faster improvement in SPAD index, better increment of fresh weight, and a decrease in ROS quantity, probably due to a memory effect promoted by Si previous application during the growing period. In summary, Si application to cucumber plants could be used to prepare plants to cope with a future stress situation, such as Zn deficiency, due to its prompt recovery after overcoming the stress period.

Interactions of Silicon With Essential and Beneficial Elements in Plants

Silicon (Si) is not classified as an essential element for plants, but numerous studies have demonstrated its beneficial effects in a variety of species and environmental conditions, including low nutrient availability. Application of Si shows the potential to increase nutrient availability in the rhizosphere and root uptake through complex mechanisms, which still remain unclear. Silicon-mediated transcriptional regulation of element transporters for both root acquisition and tissue homeostasis has recently been suggested as an important strategy, varying in detail depending on plant species and nutritional status. Here, we summarize evidence of Si-mediated acquisition, uptake and translocation of nutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), boron (B), chlorine (Cl), and nickel (Ni) under both deficiency and excess conditions. In addition, we discuss interactions of Si-with beneficial elements: aluminum (Al), sodium (Na), and selenium (Se). This review also highlights further research needed to improve understanding of Si-mediated acquisition and utilization of nutrients and vice versa nutrient status-mediated Si acquisition and transport, both processes which are of high importance for agronomic practice (e.g., reduced use of fertilizers and pesticides).

Boron incorporation into precipitated calcium carbonates affected by aqueous pH and boron concentration

The objectives of this study were to investigate the amount of B incorporation into precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) in the coprecipitation process, and to determine specific mineral phases (calcite or vaterite) and the mode of B coordination (trigonal or tetrahedral) in PCC under different pH and B concentrations. The amount of B incorporation into PCC increased in general with increasing aqueous B (B_aq) concentrations in the pH range from 8 to 12. The B removal by PCC reached maximum (∼200 mmol kg^-1) at pH 10 with B_aq concentrations between 30 and 50 mM. The transformation of vaterite to calcite was promoted with increasing B_aq at pH 8 and 10, whereas an excess concentration of aqueous (poly)borate anions (100 mM) inhibited crystal growth of calcite. As determined by B K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, the coordination of B incorporated in PCC was preferentially tetrahedral (^IVB, 55-70%) over trigonal (^IIIB, 30-45%) at B_aq <75 mM. In contrast, the preferential incorporation of ^IVB into PCC was not observed in the solution with a high B concentration (i.e., 100 mM). The amount of B incorporation, the morphology of PCC and B coordination in PCC were remarkably changed in high B_aq concentrations.
