Density Functional Theory Study on the Surface Properties and Floatability of Hemimorphite and Smithsonite

Adsorption Behavior and Wettability of Rhodochrosite Surface: Effect of C18 Fatty Acid Unsaturation

Mineral surface wettability and its regulation by the adsorption of collectors have an important influence on the flotation performance. The adsorption behavior of C18 fatty acid with different unsaturation and its effect on rhodochrosite wettability was investigated with surface tension, contact angle, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. The results indicated that rhodochrosite hydrophobicity increased with the increasing concentration of fatty acid, along with the maximum contact angle (θmax) between hemimicelle concentration (HMC) and critical micelle concentration (CMC). Oleic acid (OA), linoleic acid (LA), and α-linolenic acid (ALA) had a higher θmax than stearic acid (SA), but the value decreased with the increase of C=C bond number. Besides, preferential adsorption of unsaturated fatty acids on the liquid-air interface can be attributed to the molecule’s steric hindrance resulting from C=C double bond, and the θ kept almost invariant with a higher value of ΓLG than ΓSL until HMC. The oriented monolayer and bilayer structure of fatty acids formed gradually on rhodochrosite surface with increasing concentration. However, the θmax may not necessarily correspond to the beginning of bilayer formation. Cylindrical monolayer and bilayer micelles of SA molecules were observed on rhodochrosite surface at HMC and CMC, respectively. While bilayer structures of unsaturated fatty acids formed before complete coverage of monolayer on rhodochrosite surface because of surface heterogeneity. This work provided a good understanding on the adsorption mechanism of fatty acid on rhodochrosite for flotation.

Surface Properties and Floatability Comparison of Aegirite and Specularite by Density Functional Theory Study and Experiment

Understanding the differences in surface properties between aegirite and specularite is of great significance to study their separation. In this work, the surface properties of aegirite and specularite, as well as their relationships to floatability, have been explored by first principle calculation, flotation, and Zeta potential measurement. The surface relaxation indicated that the specularite (001) surface appeared to show more surface reconstruction. The unsatisfied bond properties, Mulliken bond population, and surface charge showed that the floatability of specularite was superior to that of aegirite. The flotation results showed that the hydrophobicity of specularite was higher than that of aegirite with dodecylamine (DDA) as the collector. It is infeasible to separate specularite from aegirite by flotation using starch as the depressant, and research of effective reagents with high affinity to the element Si is the subclinical breakthrough point of specularite/aegirite separation.

Comparative Study on Surface Structure, Electronic Properties of Sulfide and Oxide Minerals: A First-Principles Perspective

First-principle calculations were used to investigate the surface structure and electronic properties of sulfide (pyrite, galena, and sphalerite) and oxide minerals (hematite, cerussite, and smithsonite). Surface relaxation and Femi energy, as well as projected DOS, are considered. Results show that the surface atoms of the sulfide minerals are more susceptible and more easily affected by the fracture bonds. The sulfide surfaces possess higher chemical potential than the corresponding oxide surfaces, and are more likely to be electron donors in reactions. The S 3p states are the mainly contributing states in the sulfide surface, while that in the oxide surface are O 2p states. The bonds of the sulfide surface have more covalent features and that of the oxide surface are ionic interactions. The O–M (M represents Fe, Pb or Zn) bonds are more stable, as the DOS of the oxide surfaces distribute in the lower energy range.
