Increased As Adsorption on Maghemite-Containing Red Mud Prepared by the Alkali Fusion-Leaching Method

Low Temperature Processing of Iron Oxide Nanoflakes from Red Mud Extract toward Favorable De-arsenification of Water

Iron oxide (α-Fe2O3) was synthesized from red mud extract followed by hydrothermal reaction at 150 °C/6-24 h in the presence of NH4OH. The crystallinity of α-Fe2O3 increased with reaction time as confirmed by X-ray Diffraction, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman illustrate the symmetric stretching vibration of the Fe-O bond in α-Fe2O3. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis shows O 1s spectra at 530.6, 531.2, and 532 eV, signifying the lattice oxygen in Fe-O, surface oxygen defects, and oxygen in adsorbed hydroxyl groups, respectively. The morphology of α-Fe2O3 nanoflakes was noticed from field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The developed particles reveal the BET surface area in the range of 136-347 m2/g. The maximum As(V) adsorption capacity of 32-41 mg/g was obtained for adsorbent dose of 0.25 g/L. The arsenic level could be lowered down to 2-3 μg/L (<10 μg/L as per WHO's limit) with contaminated real water (64 μg/L) using 0.25 g/L of sample dose within 5 min of adsorption.

Removal of Arsenic in Groundwater Using Fe(III) Oxyhydroxide Coated Sand: A Case Study in Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Because of its threat to the quality of freshwater resources and human health, arsenic (As) pollution is important to scientific communities and policymakers around the world. The Mekong Delta, Vietnam, is one hotspot of As pollution. Its risk assessment of different environmental components has been well documented; however, very few studies focus on As removal techniques. Considering this information gap, this study aimed to investigate the performance of an innovative and low-cost treatment system using Fe(III)-oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) coated sand to remove As(III) from aqueous solution. Batch and column experiments were conducted at a laboratory scale in order to study removal kinetics and efficiency. Experimental results indicated that the adsorption isotherm of As(III) on FeOOH coated sand using Langmuir and Freundlich models have high regression factors of 0.987 and 0.991, respectively. The batch adsorption experiment revealed that contact time was approximately 8 h for rough saturation (kinetic test). The concentration of As(III) in effluents at flow rates of 0.6 L/h, 0.9 L/h, and 1.8 L/h ranged from 1.1 µg/L to 1.7 µg/L. Results from this study indicated that FeOOH coated sand columns were effective in removing As(III) from water, with a removal efficiency of 99.1%. Ultimately, FeOOH coated sand filtration could be a potential treatment system to reduce As(III) in the domestic water supply in remote areas of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta.

Selective Scandium (Sc) Extraction from Bauxite Residue (Red Mud) Obtained by Alkali Fusion-Leaching Method

Bauxite residue, known as “red mud,” is a potential raw material for extracting rare-earth elements (REEs). The main REEs (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Nd, Nb, and Sm) from the raw bauxite are concentrated in RM after the Bayer leaching process. The earlier worldwide studies were focused on the scandium (Sc) extraction from RM by concentrated acids to enhance the extraction degree. This leads to the dissolution of major oxides (Fe₂O₃ and Al₂O₃) from RM. This article studies the possibility of selective Sc extraction from alkali fusion red mud (RMF) by diluted nitric acid (HNO₃) leaching at pH ≥ 2 to prevent co-dissolution of Fe₂O₃. RMF samples were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was revealed that Sc concentration in RMF can reach up to 140–150 mg kg⁻¹. Sc extraction was 71.2% at RMF leaching by HNO₃ at pH 2 and 80 °C during 90 min. The leaching solution contained 8 mg L⁻¹ Sc and a high amount of other REEs in the presence of relatively low concentrations of impurity elements such as Fe, Al, Ti, Ca, etc. The kinetic analysis of experimental data by the shrinking core model showed that Sc leaching process is limited by the interfacial diffusion and the diffusion through the product layer. The apparent activation energy (E_a) was 19.5 kJ/mol. The linear dependence of Sc extraction on magnesium (Mg) extraction was revealed. According to EPMA of RMF, Sc is associated with iron minerals rather than Mg. This allows us to conclude that Mg acts as a leaching agent for the extraction of Sc presented in the RMF in an ion-exchangeable phase.

Red Mud from the Aluminium Industry: Production, Characteristics, and Alternative Applications in Construction Materials—A Review

About 120 million tons of red mud is produced worldwide each year. Due to its high basicity and potential leaching, its storage is a critical environmental problem. This material is typically stored in dams, which demands prior care of the disposal area and includes monitoring and maintenance throughout its useful life. Consequently, it is crucial to figure out an industrial solution able to consumes large volumes of this material. At this moment, there are several studies, the majority in metallurgical procedures, building materials, and in the chemical industry, discussing how to reuse red mud. This paper provides a review of the aluminium process, including metal importance, its global production, and the environmental impact due to its manufacture process. It presents a review of the potential application of red mud showing its overall generation, some relevant characterisation results collected from the literature, and its utilisation in diverse areas of engineering. The study aimed to highlight applications where red mud characteristics may be favourable.

Solvent Extraction of Iron(III) from Al Chloride Solution of Bauxite HCl Leaching by Mixture of Aliphatic Alcohol and Ketone

Research into the solvent extraction of iron(III) from a chloride solution after bauxite HCl leaching by neutral oxygen-containing extractants and their mixtures were studied and the iron(III) extraction degree from chloride solutions using alcohols is presented. The effect of dilution of alcohol with a ketone by an extraction mixture in relation to its effectiveness was investigated. The iron(III) was efficiently extracted by the mixture of 1-octanol and 1-decanol (70%) with 2-undecanone (30%) from hydrochloric bauxite leach liquor at an O:A ratio = 2-4:1 at an iron(III) concentration of 7.4 g/L and 6 M HCl. For the removal of iron-containing organic phase from impurities (Al, Ca, Cr) that are co-extracted with iron(III), we used two step scrubbing at O:A = 5:1 by 7 M HCl as a scrub solution. The iron(III) stripping at the O:A ratio is shown. Using counter-current cascade of extractors, it was possible to obtain an FeCl3 solution with the iron(III) content of 90.5 g/L and total impurities less than 50 mg/L.

Complete Extraction of Amorphous Aluminosilicate from Coal Fly Ash by Alkali Leaching under Atmospheric Pressure

One of the potential sources of alumina and mesoporous silica is the coal-fired thermal plants waste known as the coal fly ash (CFA). The studies of the alumina extraction from CFA are often focused on the preliminary desilication, but the efficiency of the alkali desilication is low due to formation of the desilication product—Na6[Al6Si6O24]·Na2X (DSP). This research is focused on the possibility of CFA desilication without formation of DSP using a leaching process with higher liquid to solid ratios (L/S) and alkali concentrations. The experimental data were analyzed using an artificial neural network (ANN) machine learning method and a shrinking core model (SCM). The investigation of the CFA morphology, chemical and phase composition before and after leaching were carried out by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The present work shows that it is possible to avoid formation of DSP if using the L/S ratio >20 and concentration of Na2O—400 g/L during CFA leaching. The kinetics analysis by SCM showed that the process is limited by the surface chemical reaction at T <100 °C, and by diffusion through the product layer at T >100 °C, respectively. The SEM images of the solid residue after NaOH leaching under conditions that prevent the DSP formation show mullite particles with an acicular structure.

Concentration of Rare Earth Elements (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Nd, Sm) in Bauxite Residue (Red Mud) Obtained by Water and Alkali Leaching of Bauxite Sintering Dust

One of the potential sources of rare-earth elements (REE) is the industrial waste known as red mud (bauxite residue), in which the majority of REE from the initial bauxite are concentrated via the Bayer process. Therefore, the studies of the subject, both in Russia and outside, focus almost exclusively on red mud processing. This article looks into the possibility of REE concentration into red mud by leaching an intermediate product of the bauxite sintering process at Russian alumina refineries, namely electrostatic precipitator (ESP) dust. The experimental works were performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD)and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) of the sinter and sinter dust. The determination of major and rare-earth elements in the sinter from the rotary kilns and in the ESP dust before and after leaching was carried out by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The study showed that it is possible to obtain red mud that contains three times more REE than traditional waste red mud after two-stage leaching ESP dust in the water at 95 °C followed by leaching in an alkaline-aluminate liquor at 240 °C. The shrinking core model was used to study the kinetics of leaching of the original ESP dust and water-treated dust in alkaline-aluminate liquor. The study showed the change in the limiting stage of the alkaline leaching process after water treatment, with the activation energy growing from 24.98 to 33.19 kJ/mol.

Leaching Kinetics of Arsenic Sulfide-Containing Materials by Copper Sulfate Solution

The overall decrease in the quality of mineral raw materials, combined with the use of arsenic-containing ores, results in large amounts of various intermediate products containing this highly toxic element. The use of hydrometallurgical technologies for these materials is complicated by the formation of multicomponent solutions and the difficulty of separating copper from arsenic. Previously, for the selective separation of As from copper–arsenic intermediates a leaching method in the presence of Cu(II) ions was proposed. This paper describes the investigation of the kinetics of arsenic sulfide-containing materials leaching by copper sulfate solution. The cakes after leaching of arsenic trisulfide with a solution of copper sulfate were described using methods such as X-ray diffraction spectrometry (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDS). The effect of temperature (70–90 °C), the initial concentration of CuSO4 (0.23–0.28 M) and the time on the As recovery into the solution was studied. The process temperature has the greatest effect on the kinetics, while an increase in copper concentration from 0.23 to 0.28 M effects an increase in As transfer into solution from 93.2% to 97.8% for 120 min of leaching. However, the shrinking core model that best fits the kinetic data suggests that the process occurs by the intra-diffusion mode with the average activation energy of 44.9 kJ/mol. Using the time-to-a-given-fraction kinetics analysis, it was determined that the leaching mechanism does not change during the reaction. The semi-empirical expression describing the reaction rate under the studied conditions can be written as follows: 1/3ln(1 − X) + [(1 − X) − 1/3 − 1] = 4560000Cu3.61e−44900/RT t.

Recovery of Alkali from Bayer Red Mud Using CaO and/or MgO

Recovering alkali from Bayer red mud is crucial for storage security, resource utilization and environmental protection. In this study, the addition of MgO and/or CaO was conducted to recover alkali from red mud with a hydrothermal method for the first time. A synergistic result with a residual Na2O/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.03 was obtained by adding the blend of CaO and MgO at an appropriate temperature. MgO was found to be more temperature-dependent than CaO when substituting Na2O from red mud due to their different hydration processes. The alkali recovery was controlled by a reaction at a temperature of <200 °C and by internal diffusion at a higher temperature for MgO, but controlled by internal diffusion for CaO in the whole temperature range studied. The formation of hydrotalcite-like compounds with a loose structure was verified with the help of XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDS. It was proved that both the reaction kinetics and the characteristics of solid products have a significant influence on the recovery of alkali.

Leaching Kinetics of Sulfides from Refractory Gold Concentrates by Nitric Acid

The processing of refractory gold-containing concentrates by hydrometallurgical methods is becoming increasingly important due to the depletion of rich and easily extracted mineral resources, as well as due to the need to reduce harmful emissions from metallurgy, especially given the high content of arsenic in the ores. This paper describes the investigation of the kinetics of HNO3 leaching of sulfide gold-containing concentrates of the Yenisei ridge (Yakutia, Russia). The effect of temperature (70–85 °C), the initial concentration of HNO3 (10–40%) and the content of sulfur in the concentrate (8.22–22.44%) on the iron recovery into the solution was studied. It has been shown that increasing the content of S in the concentrate from 8.22 to 22.44% leads to an average of 45% increase in the iron recovery across the entire range temperatures and concentrations of HNO3 per one hour of leaching. The leaching kinetics of the studied types of concentrates correlates well with the new shrinking core model, which indicates that the reaction is regulated by interfacial diffusion and diffusion through the product layer. Elemental S is found on the surface of the solid leach residue, as confirmed by XRD and SEM/EDS analysis. The apparent activation energy is 60.276 kJ/mol.
