Abstract
BACKGROUND In the pharmaceutical sector, tissue culture techniques for large-scale production of natural chemicals can be a less expensive alternative to large-scale synthesis. Although recent biotransformation research have used plant cell cultures to target a wide range of bioactive compounds, more compiled information and synopses are needed to better understand metabolic pathways and improve biotransformation efficiencies. PURPOSE This report reviews the biochemical transformation of phenolic natural products by plant cell cultures in order to identify potential novel biotechnological approaches for ensuring more homogeneous and stable phenolic production year-round under controlled environmental conditions. METHODS Articles on the use of plant cell culture for polyphenolic and flavonoid transformations (1988 - 2021) were retrieved from SciFinder, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science through electronic and manual search in English. Following that, the authors chose the required papers based on the criteria they defined. The following keywords were used for the online search: biotransformation, Plant cell cultures, flavonoids, phenolics, and pharmaceutical products. RESULTS The initial search found a total of 96 articles. However, only 70 of them were selected as they met the inclusion criteria defined by the authors. The analysis of these studies revealed that plant tissue culture is applicable for the large-scale production of plant secondary metabolites including the phenolics, which have high therapeutic value. CONCLUSION Plant tissue cultures could be employed as an efficient technique for producing secondary metabolites including phenolics. Phenolics possess a wide range of therapeutic benefits, as anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. Callus culture, suspension cultures, transformation, and other procedures have been used to improve the synthesis of phenolics. Their production on a large scale is now achievable. More breakthroughs will lead to newer insights and, without a doubt, to a new era of phenolics-based pharmacological agents for the treatment of a variety of infectious and degenerative disorders.

Abstract
The reversible hydrolytic property of glycosyl hydrolases (GHs) as well as their acceptance of aglycones other than water has provided the abilities of GHs in synthesizing glycosides. Together with desirable physiochemical properties of glycosides and their high commercial values, research interests have been aroused to investigate the synthetic other than the hydrolytic properties of GHs. On the other hand, just like the esterification processes catalyzed by lipases, GH synthetic effectiveness is strongly obstructed by water both thermodynamically and kinetically. Medium engineering by involving organic solvents can be a viable approach to alleviate the obstacles caused by water. However, as native hydrolyases function in water-enriched environments, most GHs display poor catalytic performance in the presence of organic solvents. Some GHs from thermophiles are more tolerant to organic solvents due to their robust folded structures with strong residue interactions. Other than native sources, immobilization, protein engineering, employment of surfactant, and lyophilization have been proved to enhance the GH stability from the native state, which opens up the possibilities for GHs to be employed in unconventional media as synthases. KEY POINTS: • Unconventional media enhance the synthetic ability but destabilize GHs. • Viable approaches are discussed to improve GH stability from the native state. • GHs robust in unconventional media can be valuable industrial synthases.

Abstract
The extensive use of chemical pesticides leads to risks for both the environment and human health due to the toxicity and poor biodegradability that they may present. Farmers therefore need alternative agricultural practices including the use of natural molecules to achieve more sustainable production methods to meet consumer and societal expectations. Numerous studies have reported the potential of essential oils as biopesticides for integrated weed or pest management. However, their phytotoxic properties have long been a major drawback for their potential applicability (apart from herbicidal application). Therefore, deciphering the mode of action of essential oils exogenously applied in regards to their potential phytotoxicity will help in the development of biopesticides for sustainable agriculture. Nowadays, plant physiologists are attempting to understand the mechanisms underlying their phytotoxicity at both cellular and molecular levels using transcriptomic and metabolomic tools. This review systematically discusses the functional and cellular impacts of essential oils applied in the agronomic context. Putative molecular targets and resulting physiological disturbances are described. New opportunities regarding the development of biopesticides are discussed including biostimulation and defense elicitation or priming properties of essential oils.

Abstract
Capsaicinoids are the compounds responsible for the pungency of chili peppers. These substances have attracted the attention of many research groups in recent decades because of their antinociceptive, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity properties, among others. There are nearly 160 capsaicinoids reported in the literature. Approximately 25 of them are natural products, while the rest are synthetic or semi-synthetic products. A large amount of NMR data for the capsaicinoids is dispersed throughout literature. Therefore, there is a need to organize all this NMR data in a systematic and orderly way. This review summarizes the (1) H and (13) C NMR data on 159 natural and synthetic capsaicinoids, with a brief discussion of some typical and relevant aspects of these NMR data. Abstract
Glycosylation is one of the most important post-modification processes of small molecules and enables the parent molecule to have increased solubility, stability, and bioactivity. Enzyme-based glycosylation has achieved significant progress due to advances in protein engineering, DNA recombinant techniques, exploitation of biosynthetic gene clusters of natural products, and computer-based modeling programs. Our report summarizes glycosylation data that have been published within the past five years to provide an overall review of current progress. We also present the future trends and perspectives for glycosylation.

Abstract
Research on the functions and effects of polyphenols has gained considerable momentum in recent times. This is attributed to their bioactivities, ranging from antioxidant to anticancer activities. But their potential is seldom fully realized since their solubility and stability is quite low and their bioavailability is hampered due to extensive metabolism in the body. Biotransformation of polyphenols using enzymes, whole cell microbes, or plant cell cultures may provide an effective solution by modifying their structure while maintaining their original bioactivity. Lipase, protease, cellulase, and transferases are commonly used enzymes, with lipase being the most popular for carrying out acylation reactions. Among the whole cell microbes, Aspergillus, Bacillus, and Streptomyces sp. are the most widely used, while Eucalyptus perriniana and Capsicum frutescens are the plant cell cultures used for the production of secondary metabolites. This chapter emphasizes the development of green solvents and identification of different sources/approaches to maximize polyphenol transformation for varied applications.
